Headley Road closure???
- Barbara (8th Mar 2009 - 08:32:05)

Does anyone know anything about this closure, for 2 weeks from 16 March?

We live on Headley Road and have heard nothing, so just wondered what's going on, and if anyone knows the implications for access (pedestrian and vehicular)?

I called the number yesterday, and she said she'd ask them to call me back, but I'm a bit surprised that, living on the road, we haven't been told anything.....maybe we're the only ones....?!

Thanks!

I am very pro re-surfacing, as it is well overdue for that stretch of the road...

However, I predict absolute carnage !!

Local traffic will not go that huge roundabout route (longmore road, A325 Whitehill, Passfield), as that is a totally ridiculous route. Most locals (and Sat Navs) will go a much shorter alternative !

That alternative will be a complete nightmare, mostly single carriagway, with very few passing places.

Highways Agency Planning to knock off at 4:30 - good to see a full day of work is planned !!

I would suggest the Highway Agency starts at 9:15, to allow access to the schools & commute time. Then take their lunchbreak from 3pm to 4pm, again for the schools.

Then another 3 hours could be done from 4pm to 7pm. That way you could finish a couple of days early and minimise disruption !!!

Can't see that suggestion being taken up though - as it makes far too much sense :-)

I challenge the construction company to carry out this operation some common sense, but can hear the response "Computer says 9 to 4:30, so that's what we have to do". I hope I am being harsh !

I assume the pavements will be open for those electing to walk ?

On the positive side, You never know my kids might actually enjoy the walk and take it up full time (oink-flap, oink-flap !!).

Cheers, Finchie

At a guess closing the road between 9 and 4:30 leaves it open during the morning and evening rush hours.
Seems like common sense to me.

Finchie!
Good idea but I am sure your conclusion will be more accurate! They will most definately be setting up during the school run time and packing up at the start of Headley Road rush hour!!!
Agreed it is in desperate need but as this was planned originally in December could it not have been planned to be done during the Easter holidays? They aren't that far out and would make life easier for everyone?!

We should get to school before the road closes, but getting home will be tricky.

I drove the Tunbridge lane route, past St Marys and back over the motorway into Liphook this morning. The cars parked up seriously limit the road width, and I agree that this is going to be a bit scary - but I'm buggerred if I'm driving 5 miles extra to go around the A3.

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Dawn Hoskins (11th Mar 2009 - 09:40:50)

did the A3 route today - it took an extra 15 minutes to drive to Greatham and double back to Longmoor Road.

It was quicker to do the Tunbridge Lane route - but of course there was no other cars on the road when I did the test run.

Not looking forward to next week - although i am looking forward to a nice smooth road!!

- Eneida (11th Mar 2009 - 12:23:47)

"Not looking forward to the next week"....tell me about it!!

I've had noise and aggravation with fork-lift trucks and mechanical diggers rushing about for days now at the back of my garden, even at night with head lights on and now I can look forward to the same thing at the front ....oh joy!!!

Eneida

What's going on behind you, is it private land doing some building etc ?

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Eneida (12th Mar 2009 - 10:28:49)

Hi Barry,

It's a private bungalow that's being renovated and has been going on for months!!

Apart from the constant noise, what's upset me is, that now they've started on the garden, seated on their digger they can see straight into my kitchen window :(

I realise there's nothing I can do about it and just hope they get it finished soon....I was just having a moan :)

I'd hate that - I'd have to put some clothes on :-)

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Robert Douglas (12th Mar 2009 - 18:31:26)

The carnage will come when they've finished. At the moment, the state of the road limits most drivers to about 50mph between the Square and the Avenue. When it's as smooth as Silverstone, there'll be nothing to slow them down. I predict the toll of accidents in coming months will make the tally of the last six months (at least two people who've been knocked down in the road) pale into insignificance. And of course, with a smoother surface, they'll find it even easier than at present to speed while they're chatting away on the phone ...

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Marian Robinson (13th Mar 2009 - 11:38:57)

For those with school children - who are wondering which route to take on Monday when the Headley Road is closed - why not drop the children off at Tunbridge Lane - and let them walk to school. This would surely help to alleviate the expected traffic chaos.

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Chris (13th Mar 2009 - 12:32:06)

I saw a juggernaut careering down the Headley road a couple of days ago, taking up a mandatory 3/4 of the total road width, the sheer size of which I have never seen before! Coupled with the plonkers who use it as part of a grand prix circuit or who just have to overtake anyone doing a safe speed is it any wonder why people don't want their children walking along this road?
When will HCC do something to restrict vehicle sizes and traffic speeds along this road?

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Allan (14th Mar 2009 - 01:07:48)

Anybody seen the newsletter issued by Liphook Junior School today on this very subject. The contractors have made clear that they are aware of local and residents concerns and are promising to keep the disruption to a minimum.

Wait and see!!!

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Finchie (14th Mar 2009 - 09:53:53)

Good point Robert - a great reason never to repair severely defective roads !

Applying that principle, we should keep Hindhead exactly as it is now - the cones slow people down, it is nice and safe, yes it takes 30 minutes - but is is a safe 30 minutes. STOP THE TUNNEL.

I think your prediction is wrong ! I think tw@ts (substitue an "i") who drive fast in that Headley Road stretch drive fast whether the road is smooth or rubbish - I don't think either braincell can differentiate.

Cheers, Finchie

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Dawn Hoskins (16th Mar 2009 - 18:39:10)

OK what happened...............

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Paul Robinson (16th Mar 2009 - 20:03:52)

What happened was that the contractors were beaten to the draw when another crew pitched up to repair a water leak outside Liphook Travel.

So they dug another hole and having fixed the leak they toddled off to leave the road free to be dug up again tomorrow.

Honestly you could not write this sort of stuff!

Hi everyone.

Just to update you on the works schedule.

Today (Tue 17th) and tomorrow (Wed 18th) Headley road will be closed AM between Tower Road and the A3 from approx 09:00 to 12:00 and PM between Tower Road and Liphook Square from approx 12:00 to 16:00.

On Thursday 19th the road will be closed between Tower Road and the A3 from approx 09:00 to 16:00.

The resurfacing is hoped to be completed within the three days as stated if no interuruptions are experienced. The times and closure points are estimates and could slip slightly if the works progress faster or slower than predicted. Also, if bad weather or breakdown happens it could slip into Friday.

Works will continue during the week of 23rd March near the A3 but the road will remain open and traffic lights will be used.

You may already know this but if not it may help you to plan.

Regards
Barry

Well it's certainly all systems go now!!

The house was shaking so much this morning that I thought something was bound to fall off the wall and the lady in the Co-op told me all their bottles of drinks were jumping about in the stock room.

Actually watching the lorries moving slowly up the Headley Road, accompanied by 'hunky' men wearing Village People type clothes, reminded of the Carnival.....some colourful balloons and loud pop music would have set it all off very nicely....made it quite jolly in the sunshine, just my opinion of course ;)

Here's an update as at 10:30 ... Loads of blokes hanging around in flourescent jackets and hard hats drinking tea, talking, sitting in vans, on mobile phones, telling people in a jobsworth way about health and safety issues and "you can't park/walk there, it's more than my jobsworth" looking and acting important but not actually doing anything. Dozens and dozens of them many surplus to requirements...it must be costing a fortune! Well done whoever organised it! Sympathies go to all residents!

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Eneida (18th Mar 2009 - 11:33:37)

I noticed there's no work going on this morning....do you think it's because of what happened last night?

I was awoken about 2.25 am by a lot of noise and flashing orange lights....looked out of the bedroom window and could see it was coming from the large works vehicle parked outside the Fish & Chips shop, so guessed some person with an 'amoeba type' brain was interfering with the lorry!!

Well the temporary surface will certainly be giving you residents what you want in terms of slowing down the traffic. I was behind one very careful driver who was going so slowly he was overtaken by a bicycle.

Re: Headley Road short cut...
- Sumi Olson (18th Mar 2009 - 14:17:20)

Just to say that this morning, I went to Bordon via the A325 off the A3 turning which added around 10m more to the journey time but it was smooth going (at 10am). On the way back I went via Passfield and was diverted into Liphook via Bramshott. I was lucky as I was in the middle of a convoy if cars heading into Liphook and we appeared to flow fairly steadily, if not as quickly into Liphook. However, given the single lane access and the amount of cars trying to go through in both directions, I'd not recommend this route to get into Passfield & Whitehill. I didn't think it fair on the local residents and there's a real potential for log jams and scraping of car sides. So will use the A3/325 route with smoother flows, wider roads and just less hassle over the next few days.
BTW - asides from the novel approach of walking to school, surely The Avenue approach on the Bohunt side will get pupils to Liphook Infant School?

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Melanie (19th Mar 2009 - 10:55:23)

Lovely and quiet while this resurfacing is taking place, no cars waking me in the early hours zooming down the road. It almost feels like I live in the countryside...

Some drivers not going slowly down the road don't seem to realise their tyres are kicking up stones painfully onto pedestrians legs. And the workmen dumped a sandbag right on my emerging daffs - quite annoying.

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Finchie (19th Mar 2009 - 14:56:37)

Could have been an isolated incident that caused gridlock, but a gentlemen in his latter years just sat behind a parked white van up by the church, for many, many minutes, thinking that it was just part of the queue. Luckily someone realised, and jumped out to let him know it was a parked van - as it could have been a number of hours before the van moved, allowing the 50+ cars snaking back on church lane to get on with their journey.

At least the sun is shining !

Cheers, Finchie

Now that the work is complete I must just say what an improvement it is. The road surface is very smooth so no more boucncing down the road and it's a lot quieter too.

Aside from the odd idiot going down the road at 60mph+ I've not noticed any increase in speed which is good.

Now that we have a lovely road I wonder how long before someone decides to dig it up. One month or two ?

Re: Headley Road closure???
- Eneida (24th Mar 2009 - 15:45:27)

I agree that we now have a lovely, smooth road....what about giving us a lovely, pot-hole free pavement to go with it??

I'm fed up with having to wade through puddles every time it rains and it must be murder for mothers with pushchairs, people in wheelchairs etc.

What a lovely job they made of Headley Road. Sweepstake any one on how long untill the utilities start to dig it up?
