- Darren Ellis (6th Dec 2012 - 08:07:33)

To "Dan" and to "dave"
Do you realise how much time and effort the Volunteers of Liphook in Bloom spend on trying to make Liphook a nicer and prettier place for us all to live and work.
I do as my 70+ year old father has worked in his freezing cold garage recently trying to make some of the very old Christmas lights look better and last another year, along with numerous other volunteers working evenings and weekends trying to do the same, some even putting some of there own money as well as time into it.
They might look a little older and duller than some other towns but without some more help, and more importantly money, it's the best they can do. They even had to contend with some low life's stealing some of these so called "old and look like they have seen better days" Christmas decorations. (they obviously thought they looked OK?)
If you both, and anyone else who feels the same, would like to see better lights then dig deep into your pockets and/or give some time to Liphook in Bloom rather than be rude about the hard work and effort that other people put in on your behalf.
Also if you do feel you need to comment on someone else's work then please have the decency to use your full names so we all know who you are, I'm sure there's many "Dan's" and "dave's" who don't feel like you both do and wouldn't want others to think that.

Re: Christmas lights
- dave (6th Dec 2012 - 08:57:05)

Sorry i thought it was the council who supply the lights. So a big thankyou to liphook in bloom team for making it possable and once again all your hard work for the village.

Re: Christmas lights
- G renouf (6th Dec 2012 - 09:57:47)

Right lets get the ball rolling £10 here for new lights whos next

If every family in Liphook gave £1 we could have lots of lights so wheres the Christmas village spirit

Re: Christmas lights
- Doreen (6th Dec 2012 - 10:00:23)

Out of interest, do the council supply Haslemeres lights?
And if they do, why don't the council supply Liphooks?
Having said that, I was sitting in a traffic jam in Haslemere Road last evening thinking how nice our lights look ..

Re: Christmas lights
- Simon Coyte (6th Dec 2012 - 10:22:29)

Even if Haslemere do pay for the lights it would still cost the rate payers.

If enough like minded people from Liphook give a few quid, and may be some fund raising such as LIDBA cycle ride we could have some really super lights next year.

Merry Christmas

Simon

Re: Christmas lights
- Thea (6th Dec 2012 - 11:09:53)

£10 from me too...
Any suggestions on how to collect donations? What about a just giving account? I'm a bit of a technophobe myself...the Liphook Herald could do a short story and point people in the right direction.
I agree that our lights are lovely but we need a facelift for 2013 definitely,
Thea

Re: Christmas lights
- Paul Robinson (6th Dec 2012 - 11:34:32)

I cannot believe some of the begrudgers who have posted negative comments about the village Christmas Lights on this site.

Repairing, rewiring and reconstructing these lights is undertaken each year by the Liphook In Bloom team in some very uncomfortable conditions. The theft of four of them this year was made good by cannibalising others to maintain the same number of displays.

It is hoped that all this effort goes some way towards encouraging shoppers to frequent the already hard pressed retailers in the village.

And before anyone takes the usual pot shot at the Parish Council they should bear in mind that this year the bill for erecting the lights came to over £2,900 which came from the public purse, that is your money and mine.

So enjoy the lights, spend all you can afford in the village and have a Happy Christmas.

Re: Christmas lights
- Councillor Barbara Easton (6th Dec 2012 - 11:53:51)

Yes as posted above by Councillor Robinson the council do contribute. Theft of public items is a concern, the large batteries are also being stolen from the SLR cameras, these are expensive!

What SLR cameras ?

Re: Christmas lights
- Councillor Barbara Easton (6th Dec 2012 - 12:18:22)

The cost to the council is 10k a year to run these cameras - they were in service up until recently, if they are not currently operational I will investigate!

SLR usually standards for 'single lens reflex', do I assume you are referring to the vehicle speed cameras ? The last one I saw was in Passfield and wasn't functioning.

Re: Christmas lights

Re: Christmas lights
- G renouf (6th Dec 2012 - 14:08:21)

I will find out from the bloomers and get something up and running

Re: Christmas lights
- Dan (6th Dec 2012 - 22:33:45)

I didn't realise that Liphook in bloom spent many hours repairing these lights each year, i certainly didnt mean to criticise those hardworking volunteers. Maybe as a village we could raise money for some new ones so they wouldn't have to be repaired each year - one way we could raise money is by adding one pound to everyone's council tax less than 2 pence a week not sure how many houses in Liphook but surely it would raise a fair amount of money, or an easier way would maybe a donation scheme, I would be more than happy to donate.

Re: Christmas lights
- Nadine (6th Dec 2012 - 23:14:28)

Hey, Nic and I will donate some money, on behalf of our businesses Russells and Oakley Stables...if someone could tell us who to give the money to, we will sort.
thank you!

Re: Christmas lights
- jxninuk (7th Dec 2012 - 11:22:55)

count me in...where do I send my money?

Re: Christmas lights
- Chrissy (7th Dec 2012 - 14:52:46)

I'm happy to donate too. Just let us know where to send the money.
Perhaps we could ask certain businesses to see if they would be prepared to have a 'Liphook Christmas lights appeal' piggy bank on their counters. A bit like they do for the toy appeal. A3 sports always seem happy to help with stuff like this and they are in a good place for all of us to get to. (Sorry A3 sports for volunteering you)

Re: Christmas lights
- charlie (7th Dec 2012 - 17:25:59)

Happy to donate £10.00 too. Lights look lovely and I'm glad we have some - perhaps next year they could be even better if everyone chips in!

Re: Christmas lights
- ian (8th Dec 2012 - 16:55:44)

Re: Christmas lights
- Paul Johnson - Liphook in Bloom lights co-ordinator (10th Dec 2012 - 11:55:14)

Liphook in Bloom are very grateful for all of the support that has been offered in raising funds for new Christmas lighting. To be able to assess the feasability of replacing the lights we need to obtain quotations for 19 new decorations to fit on the lampcolumns in the Square and Station Road. As this will take sometime to complete we would ask that anyone who wishes to make a donation sends an email to info@liphookinbloom.co.uk stating how much they are willing to donate. Once we have obtained quotations we will contact them and share with them the design of decorations that we are considering and what the overall costs will be.

Re: Christmas lights
- Fiona (10th Dec 2012 - 12:51:26)

My husband is enquiring at work (a large company based across the south east who sometimes sponsor things like this) as to whether they would purchase a light for next year. The quotes you mention would be much appreciated. Maybe other local companies (Allianz Cornhill, Old Thorns, AMK etc) would consider doing the same for all or part of a light?

Great idea everyone and many thanks to everyone who has looked after the current lights until now - they're still lovely and colourful and my children love them!

Re: Christmas lights
- Gary Renouf (10th Dec 2012 - 18:40:06)

Will do Paul

Yes the big displays are eye catching and realy colourful

Findlays display simple white lights on trees if each shop had this ???

Other suggestions maybe , just thinking out load

( I know daft thing to do " thinking " always makes my head hurt)
I guess when you speak to the light companies they will suggest things
corr a big surpise it will be jst like Chrismas all over again

Re: Christmas lights
- Heather L (28th Dec 2012 - 00:35:43)

I've just pledged £10. Thank you to all who work to make Liphook look like a community.

Re: Christmas lights
- Mandy Ellis (28th Dec 2012 - 18:56:56)

I have only just looked at the talkback site and was appalled by the attitude of people over the christmas lights.

Why does it take a reply from my brother (yes! Darren!), to put things straight. People are too quick in Liphook to complain but not quick enough to provide their names or put their hands in their pockets or even give some time to help.

I know from experience that my dad (Russell) spends many many hours helping Liphook in Bloom. He is not the only one - all of the committee and helpers devote their time and money into making Liphook look great. It is not just about planting a few flowers to make the flower beds look pretty in the summer!!

I was up and about early on a Saturday morning, with ice on the road and freezing temperatures when I came across three of the Liphook in Bloom members, climbing ladders, trying to replace all the broken bulbs in the decorations.

With my moan over, I would like to say a big thank you to all who have pledged to donate some money. I quite agree that maybe some of the larger companies based in Liphook could donate a little more.
