Big black cat seen
- Tom (8th Feb 2012 - 15:03:38)

Out walk my dog in radford park saw a big black cat runing up the bank in to woods and not a puss cat.

Hi Tom, just how big was this 'cat' then?

Re: Big black cat seen
- Darren (8th Feb 2012 - 16:04:54)

Was it a big "TOM" cat or big cat "TOM"

Re: Big black cat seen
- Rhys (8th Feb 2012 - 18:04:10)

The other day I think I saw something similar.
I was walking the dog round the park by the (locked) gate to Bramshott Place.
There was an animal about the size of a Labrador but it looked more cat like.

- Jane G (9th Feb 2012 - 08:24:06)

OK...off to Radford Park with the dog this morning...if you don't hear from me again I might have found the Surrey Puma....watch this space ;-)

Re: Big black cat seen
- P Weyland (9th Feb 2012 - 08:53:30)

I saw something very similar back in about 2001-2002 whilst walking my dog in the woods near Highfield Lane.

It was gone in a flash but big, black and cat like!

Re: Big black cat seen
- Eneida (9th Feb 2012 - 09:30:33)

If you google 'Big Cats in Hampshire' or something similar, you'll see that there have been numerous sightings of these cats around the county over the years!!

The most famous one seems to be the Hayling Island African Swamp Cat, which was run over by some woman driver and is now on show in a museum...

Re: Big black cat seen
- Paula (10th Feb 2012 - 23:46:21)

I saw a very large black cat, sitting on the side of the road also just near the turning to Highfield Lane about 2 years ago. The way it was sat I would say it was a Puma or similar.

Having been brought up in a local village (many years ago!) where a couple had two black pumas as pets, I do always wonder what happened to them, especially with the new laws. My father used to do work for the couple and I remember being taken to see them on more than one occasion. Unfortunately, my Father has long since passed away and I wish he was here to ask. I seem to think though that they were not pumas and keep thinking panther but really cannot remember and most probably are one and the same.

I am sure of course these are not the original animals as they would be long gone but do wonder if they bred.

ITN reports this week.

Re: Big black cat seen
- Rey (12th Feb 2012 - 01:15:56)

The animal in that vid is clearly a fox.Low shoulders, high rump and moved differently to a cat. Apparantly black foxes are not a rarity and are seen quite regularly around this area

Re: Big black cat seen
- john (12th Feb 2012 - 10:42:27)

There use to be stuffed black fox in the black fox pub.

Re: Big black cat seen
- Harvey (12th Feb 2012 - 14:14:50)

I have just found the big black cat's 'scratching post' there is a beech tree that is completley scrached up from about 4 to 6 feet up. My dog started whimpering and crying when I came across the tree, he was very frightened.
The tree is just off the path by a seat in the western section of the park, next to where a big tree was recently cut down.

This is obviously a large and dangerous animal, I think people should stay away, especially if they have children or dogs.

- peter terry (12th Feb 2012 - 17:40:26)

has any one got any pics of this black cat as head grondsman for the parish council i am concerned about this report all the years we have worked in the park have never seen it yet ? peter

Re: Big black cat seen
- liz (13th Feb 2012 - 08:39:17)

Any footprints in the snow?
I agree with Rey that the creature in the video is a fox. The tail is a bit of a giveaway.

Re: Big black cat seen
- Eneida (13th Feb 2012 - 09:04:11)

There WAS a fox on that video in the foreground, as the commentary said, but it looked and moved quite differently from the black cat-like creature they were talking about...

Re: Big black cat seen
- liz (13th Feb 2012 - 11:09:10)

Opening shots imply that this is the cat - with the fox seen later. Difficult to tell with TV editing!

Re: Big black cat seen
- Andrew (13th Feb 2012 - 11:20:15)

The pic you looking at this in gloucestershire not in hampshire? Look at vidoe read it

Re: Big black cat seen
- liz (13th Feb 2012 - 12:29:12)

Andrew
I don't think anyone was implying this was the 'Radford Park' black cat!

Re: Big black cat seen
- Allan (13th Feb 2012 - 16:03:51)

John,

There still is. Shot the day that Churchill died and is known (rather pompously) as the Churchill Memorial Fox.
A bloke e-mailed me from Sydney, Australia a while back asking if we still had it. He apparantly read about it in a non-returned library book he came accross. Small world!

Harvey - stay away from where exactly? Just Radford Park? Surely such a cat would not stay within the confines of the Park?

Glad I don't live in Bramshott Place or The Maltings!

As for it not being seen by those working in the park - I don't imagine you've ever seen the foxes or badgers that live in the park either as I guess you are generally making quite a bit of noise in your activities and keeping the wildlife away - I would suggest you make as much noise as possible in future!

Re: Big black cat seen
- Jay W (10th Mar 2012 - 12:35:53)

I saw a deer last year - I think in the area Harvey was talking about - you go past the Maltings and then up the small hill (heading towards the pond) with the path to the caves on your right.

The path levels out at the top of the hill and continues until it drops down to the pond. Deer was leaping across the path at top of hill - probably trying to get away before my dog saw it.

Saw a large black cat at a distance of about 150m in a field near Arford. Estimate it to be approx 70-80cm tall and nose to tail about 225cm long. Scaled from a fox seen in the same place about 10 mins later.

Re: Big black cat seen
- DML (7th Aug 2013 - 01:16:41)

I was in Radford Park the other day and saw the tooth fairy and father christmas having a picnic ..

Re: Big black cat seen
- P Weyland (7th Aug 2013 - 08:19:39)

That's totally plausible DML. In the 1960s it became illegal to keep imaginary characters as pets. They were all let loose into to wild to fend for themselves.

I saw this Panther near Liphook while hiking. It was just 30 meters in front of me it came out of the hedgerow turned to face me. Stared me down for 20 seconds and slowly padded away.

I doubted myself for weeks but the only conclusion I can come to PANTHER. To all you doubters I hope it bites your *** so finally we have evidence that it's true

Re: Big black cat seen
- liz (22nd Jul 2014 - 12:03:34)

Where, exactly, near Liphook?

Re: Big black cat seen
- emily (8th Oct 2014 - 19:21:22)

have been walking dog up at bramshott common and at about 7pm a large black cat thing crossed in front of us and then stared at us from the bushes.
scared me enough to get to my car asap
didnt look like a fox, dog or deer to me!!!!

Re: Big black cat seen
- ellie (8th Oct 2014 - 23:05:41)

I do not think it is a panther, I have seen this very large cat and it behaves like a very large cat not a panther. It has been crossing from The Radford Park area to Hewshott lane and Bramshott Common. It has not got a collar on, but the tail and head and eyes were different to a panther. It is probably the biggest black cat I have ever seen!,

Re: Big black cat seen
- liz (9th Oct 2014 - 08:38:12)

Possibly a Maine Coon? They are extremely large domestic moggies and can be black

Re: Big black cat seen
- Kevin (10th Oct 2014 - 00:00:07)

I have a pair of pumas that I keep in the downstairs cloakroom, size 9. I don't let them out on their own but they are always seen as a pair, so I guess it wasn't them. Tell you what, I have seen a couple of Cougars near Sainsbury's though!!! Good luck in your quest for the black cat, fellow Liphookians.

Re: Big black cat seen
- Julian (5th Dec 2016 - 12:38:18)

Funnily enough a couple of weeks ago I saw a black Labrador-sized animal with cat-like features at Hill House Hill Corner. Certainly not a dog, definitely a large cat with a long slinky.

Rounding the Hill House Hill corner heading towards Passfield this was very large cat was walking along the fence line in the field on the left, away from the B3004 towards Conford.

Has anyone had any other sightings?

I was out walking my Percy and Mr Sausage very early this morning when we noticed a large black cat like creature on the verge outside the Moss Court flats on Portsmouth Road. As we approached I believe he was chomping on a rat.

Seemed to have bluish eyes and there was no tail. Has anyone else seen this animal?
