Yikes. Do I really want to move to Liphook now?
- Hannah (26th Jul 2011 - 18:58:25)

So, those of you following my self-obsessed ramblings on this site will know (or not know) that we finally have a finite, intact ANC proceed able chain and we are supposedly working to a completion date of mid September. Cause for much rejoicing after all the hoops one has to jump throughh in this country to buy and sell a house!

But, blimey, forgive me if I don't have a few last minute jitters....

Illegal (or otherwise) parties, fights in fields, much scrambling of police helicopters...street robberies...some kind of hold up in the fish and chip shop...dog mess everywhere....idiot drivers....a travellers encampment seemingly setting itself up just down the road...

Ok, we have dog mess in fulham from the "too posh to scoop" brigade and the noise from the heathrow flight path is pretty bad and the schools aren't up to much but the postings from the last few days are making me wonder if I'd do better to stay put!

In the interests of balance, please could everyone use this thread to remind me of all the great things about Liphook? Quickly?!

- Jane G (26th Jul 2011 - 19:10:56)

Fabulous schools, great community spirit (despite what you may have read on here!), a new proactive parish council, beautiful walking country (and no, not loads of dog mess!), the carnival, Liphook in Bloom, great little shops, train station, Starbucks just opened at Old Thorns, coffee shop in The Square, The Links for a nice meal out, The Anchor for a cheap meal out, LiDBA charity bike ride, monthly producers market...have I missed anything anyone??

Honestly Hannah it was the best move I ever made...you will love it :-)

It's because they are so unusual that they are the talk of the village. The problem would be if they were so commonplace that nobody bothered commenting anymore!

Hannah don't be put off, we have lived here for 46 years and brought up 2 daughters and now have teenage + grandchildren and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.we too came through the village around 11.30 pm on Saturday and wondered what was going on but the youngsters all appeared well behaved and quite a few of them were congregated outside our house on London Road but they were just talking not shouting or swearing and very polite when we spoke to them to find out what was going on. Gradually parents or friends came to pick them up and they were all gone by about 2.0am so no complaints from us. Good luck with the move.

It'se sense of community, the friendly people, good schools, good churches (if you go to church).

I love Liphook, for all its fauls, it's no different to any other town, village or city, it will have crime, parties etc, except here in Liphook, you have the beautiful country side and people that make this place a GREAT place to be.

Love
Tru

Ummm .... yes of course you do. It might seem like it's turned into a series of Emmerdale but it does have a great community spirit. I love it here. It's the gateway to the new South Downs National Park, surrounded by fantastic countryside owned by National Trust, MoD etc. and there are lovely walks. We're halfway between London and the coast with good train links. There are some changes going on but could we say it's vibrant? At least there's a lot of dialogue going on.

That's more like it! Five positive replies in a matter of minutes. You're right, we ARE doing this for all the right reasons. And...breathe again.

And JR, "our" house is on London Rd too so we will be neighbours. Other than the toddler's tantrums and a bit of baby grumbling (thankfully he's not a cryer) we don't make much noise. :)

I do not know where in London you live Hannah I lived in a good area of London for 10 years, and it was quiet and peaceful, yet only 10 mins away from a trouble spot, I guess you will find good and bad things everywhere especially if you look hard enough to find them!

- Bob (27th Jul 2011 - 01:02:55)

......and apart from all that, you'll save £100s on car and home insurance!

That's the proof that it's a low crime area. Don't have any more doubts.

Welcome to Liphook!

Hey Hannnah,
They ALL forgot to mention this wonderful Nepalese Restaurant in Liphook. It is owned by Mani who is a serving Gurkha and his lovely wife Sudha who is actually a nurse. The staff deliver excellent service and the cuisine is devine. You can lunch/dine in,get a Takeaway, have the food delivered to your door or even served at your home for friends and family!
The youngsters are always welcome..Sunday lunch times are lazy affairs...you've got to see it for yourself...and the bill is most reasonable.
We have been there 4 years and have a huge number of regulars in the area.
The goings on is a one off.

- Hannah (27th Jul 2011 - 08:40:31)

Sudha - you're top of our list of dining out options for our first Liphook "date night"! (other recommendations also welcome) :)

Liphook is a great place to live - lovely countryside and easy travelling to both London and the coast. Try No. 26 in the square - a lovely place to meet friends for lunch or coffee. There is also a good library in the village and a really good wine shop. Don\'t have second thoughts!!!

Having lived and worked in London for many years and now a Liphook resident, I can tell you there is no comparison. You will not regret your move Hannah. As someone said, it is precisely because we have so few off-beat incidents that when they do happen they are the talk of the town.
Hope the move goes well!

Dont forget Hollycombe Steam Park only 1 mile out of Liphook, it is the largest park of its kind in the south and maybe the country, you can also do 12 bore laser clays shooting up there, this shooting is totally safe and enviromently friendy, give the park a go, you will love it.

If you compare crime stats (as but one metric) for Fulham against Liphook it may help with decision making.

Fulham recorded above England average for burglary, theft, offences against a vehicle, sexual assault, robbery and violence against the person.

Liphook recorded below England averages for the same data sources. Liphook was significantly below Fulham for each data source (Souce: ONS).

I wish I'd moved to Liphook 30 years ago instead of only six years - such lovely friendly people, that's the best thing about Liphook!

Fights etc? I\'ve lived here for years, I\'ve never heard gossip about robberies etc.
on a Friday- Sat night you may get the odd person drunk. Doesn\'t this happen everywhere?

Re: Yikes. Do I really want to move to Liphook now?

Sattababycakes good job you've been here years - it must have taken you that long of scrolling down to find this ancient old post!

On the outside liphook is a great town. Not a village.
But now it is getting too big. Too many houses by beaver industrial estate are now encroaching the area. If you have children prepare to be blocked in and have a slow journey to schools. And you risk your life by demon mothers in their massive cars that will plough over you in order to get their kids to school!
I have lived here for over thirty years and I am so disappointed how liphook has evolved.
So liphook is ok! Not!
