Website set up
- Dawn Hoskins (20th Mar 2018 - 17:54:42)
I need someone to sit with me and explain what the hell I am doing!
Got the domain name for hubsters company and have been paying for it for a year - haven't had the courage to go through the process of creating the site. It should be easy ~(apparently) but I find it a bit terrifying so haven't done anything at all!
I need someone to walk me through it - anyone out there who would be willing.
If your company needs some Deaf Awareness Training or British Sign Language Training I could do a swap for services?

Hi Dawn,
As someone who builds applications and websites for a living I am not sure I would say its especially easy.
There are shortcuts to keep costs down but I would imagine an off the shelf design which is tweaked should not cost more than around 400 - 500 including hosting and supporting the site from a local / UK based developer.
If you want to have a go yourself (and you have nothing to lose) then check out some of the online web development courses - there are some free ones. At the very least try and get a single page up which looks reasonable.
For site designs I recommend you have a look here - https://themeforest.net/popular_item/by_category?category=site-templates
This is the shortcut I mentioned - where you buy a template and then modify it to meet your needs, be aware the templates can be a little stuffed with lots of features which can be a bit challenging to dig through.
Make sure you select one which is mobile friendly as current trends indicate the majority of traffic now comes from mobile devices, so making sure things like phone numbers are clickable rather then embedded on image are important, as is the business address.
Don't forget to look at SEO information as well to make sure the site ranks as well as it can in the Google index, ultimately correctly formatted pages with the right meta tags will help but really Google just likes content.
I should also mention any website nowadays should have SSL by default, especially as it doesn't cost anything.
A website is a valid business expense and even if its just a brochure ware site which is just used for advertising it should provide more long term value then it costs.
I don't need the deaf awareness training so I am unable to take you up on your offer of swapping services but I wish you luck.

Hi Mark,
Please accept my apologies if I have trivialized your profession in any way - not my intention I assure you. What I meant by 'easy' is the process that Go Daddy' have as the build your page type of 'spoon-fed' set up

Hi Dawn,
Don't worry I understand.
I might see if there is any demand locally for website and mobile application development.

Hey dawn,
Keep it simple. There are many providers out there who will host your site for you (e.g. SquareSpace, Wix, WordPress).
You can transfer your domain name to their service and it should make it all a little easier for you.
It shouldn't cost you any more than £15 a month. Naturally, you can choose to upgrade you package when you feel you are ready.
