Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner
- Paul Robinson (17th Mar 2018 - 19:48:05)
Like many others, today I received my Council Tax bill and note that the total I am required to pay to East Hants District Council has increased by 5.2% over last year.
Whilst both East Hants District Council and Bramshott & Liphook Parish Council have not increased their charges, the biggest single increase (+7.3%) is for the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire.
As a matter of interest, how many people know the name of our Police and Crime commissioner, more to the point, has he ever visited Bramshott & Liphook?
I can tell you that when his predecessor was invited to attend the Parish Council's Annual meeting he, or his department,t did not have the courtesy to reply.
Much has been said about the absence of police in the parish so is it not time that we asked what we are being asked to pay for?

A very good point, Paul.

Good points Paul, no idea who he/she is! Strange ,when bank gets robbed the village was swarming in patrol cars albeit bit late. Other than the speed cameras we rarely see a police person.

Here Here.
Less and less visible policing yet more money needed.

Quite right Paul. We are being charged more despite a reduced police presence in East Hampshire. More accountability needed.

I would like to know what we actually get for these rises too!
And we don't even seem to be able to challenge them either.
At least if councils go over their 5% rise limit they are accountable for it, via a referendum.

The demand comes with no justification or explanation whatsoever.
I would have thought that the least they would have done is to provide some reason for a three times inflation increase.

Had no idea who the PCC was, so googled them.
Michael Lane. Ex Royal Navy, so PCC not a bad number to retire into really.

Interesting article on their site. The Hampshire Police & Crime Panel met in January and proposed a £12 (for Band D) increase in our council tax.
Is it just me, or is that literally turkey's voting for Christmas? I wish in my job we could get together and vote ourselves an increase - then simply inforce it on the public. As if!

Quite simply, this is outrageous. We are being asked to pay more for a police force where we are seeing less officers on the beat, less police stations open and in many cases no attempt to investigate crime such as vandalism, burglary and anti social behaviour.

Hypothetically speaking, I wonder what would happen if we declined to pay the increase?
I suspect EHDC would take enforcement action, but if we all did it, would they be able to cope?

Turkey's and Christmas - yes for sure.
The Hampshire PCC doesn't exist - no one has seen him or understands the objectives for him being there, and there is no visible evidence he has done a single thing since he was elected

For those who didn't watch yesterdays early evening news, the PCC for this area was on South Today yesterday doing 'something or other'.
When you get a chance take a look on catch up.
At least you will be able to see he exists, and what he looks / sounds like!

about the same as CQC [Care Quality Commission] having their head offices at SW1 Buckingham Palace Road....spending our money 'wisely'!
Tax payers are paying for lovely offices in central while this Body regulates health & social care,ie older peoples services, learning disabilities, mental health services, hospitals etc etc ..and you think care this is ok?
Damian Hinds does, its already been questioned & received the usual retort!
He states;I have no personal knowledge of why the CQC has moved its London office to 151 Buckingham Palace Road or what the costs may be, but you may like to know that its spending of public money is scrutinised by the National Audit Office (NAO) on behalf of Parliament, working with the Public Accounts Committee.
Thats ok then....
Police commissioners are vague ambassadorial roles, without any specific regulatory function, also at a cost to the tax payer, raise it,only Joe Public can bring about change...

Afraid not Ian, the PCCs were created by the Lib Dem/Conservative coalition in 2010, both parties featured the idea in their election manifestos for that year.

Don't worry everyone, our enlightened leaders have just said that police cuts don't have any effect on crime rates!
At least not round our way, apparently all the spare officers are needed to protect Parliament from, errm, crime...
You couldn't make it up!

It is so easy to point the finger at the government and police cuts for the rise in crime rates. Look at the bigger picture – breakdown of family life, young men growing up with no stable male role model in the family, drugs and parents not taking their responsibilities seriously ie lack of parental control and guidance and not giving enough time to their children while they are growing up particularly in the early formative years. It is each individual’s choice as to whether or not they have children, but if you do at least give the child/children the time, love and guidance every child needs while growing up. We live in a “blame culture” society. When in doubt blame someone, anyone who fits the bill. It seems to make some people feel better and requires so little effort.
