Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- J (16th Mar 2018 - 12:25:39)

Just received notice of planning application reference 33993/088 from Sainsbury's. They're looking to extend their allowed delivery and opening times as follows.

Deliveries

Currently: 07:00 - 21:30 Monday to Saturday and 08:00 - 16:00 on Sundays & Bank Holidays.

Proposed: 06:00 - 23:00 Monday - Friday and 07:00 - 23:00 Saturday (no change to Sundays & BHs).

Opening hours

Currently: 8.00 - 22.00 Monday to Saturday and 10.00 - 16.00 hours on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Proposed: 07.00 - 22.00 Monday to Saturday and 10.30 - 16.30 hours on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Personally I don't see a problem with the opening hours, but I would have thought extending deliveries beyond 21:30 might be a nuisance particularly to the people living nearby, let alone lorries coming through the village at a later time affecting more of us.

This will be because they have knowledge of the new supermarket coming,to the site next to the station.
They are attempting to corner the market, although not much chance unless they also plan to extend the store and lines they sell. Its all a bit same old same old currently.
Also room for an extra supermarket, nothing wrong with a bit of competition.
Personally,I can't wait for it.

Bring on 24 hour opening please, they can manage it elsewhere already, would be great to be able to pop in and buy me fags and beer in the small hours, there's not much else to do at 3am in Liphook, as an oldie who wakes up with me lumbago at all hours it would be nice to be able to pop and shop when those pesky schoolkids aren't about, we keep hearing about all the bad things they get up to and frankly it's terrifying, you can increasingly shop all hours in many other growing towns and cities so let's move with the times!

More likely applied for as the new industrial and offices being built applied and got accepted for longer hours ! So you can’t give to one and not the other

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Helen (16th Mar 2018 - 16:54:13)

Yes the industrial estate permission has encoraged this. The extended opening hours are not too much but it is the noise of the deliveries which could cause a problem.

- V (16th Mar 2018 - 19:57:47)

I live on Ottawa Drive which is the only road to Sainsburys delivery area. We already tolerate the delivery lorry noise during the present restricted delivery hours. Plus - we cope with the noise from the garage and the noise from the recycle area all the time that Sainsburys is open.
Thank goodness for the few restrictions which are in place. We really could do with more of them.
We will eventually get a Summer so whilst I am on the subject of disturbance, can I ask you please not to throw your bottles in the recycle bins on a weekend when we are enjoying time in our gardens, especially if you have decided to save them all until you have a boxful to send crashing into the bin. You know who you are!

I'm going to save all my bottles for the weekend now 😂😂

Sympathy for those living near Sainsburys who were there before the supermarket was built, Chiltley Manor Estate etc but not for those who bought on the "Sainsburys estate" knowing there was a supermarket and petrol station nearby. Stands to reason there would be disturbance. In fact I think Chiltley Manor are closer to the unloading bays and will suffer the most noise disturbance.

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Chris (17th Mar 2018 - 08:53:08)

Jay, i totally agree with you. People who buy their houses, at a cheaper market price, next to a supermarket or Industrial site should expect noise and disruption. And for a supermarket to open at 7 would greatly help alot of us who start work at 8.

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Dawn Hoskins (17th Mar 2018 - 11:05:39)

Hi V
Did you not notice that there was a big Sainsburys store on the Sainsburys Estate when you purchased your house?

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Penny (17th Mar 2018 - 11:11:23)

Totally agree with Chris and Jay. No sympathy at all. Sainsburys was there when these houses were built and being built. To complain now about the noise is ridiculous. It reminds me of people who buy houses next to public houses and then complain about the noise of car doors opening and closing and people saying goodnight!!

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Gr (17th Mar 2018 - 11:30:31)

I thought sainsburys when give permission to build with strict rules on opening time size of store and what they could sell

I guess if big enough the rules dont apply to you
Should never have been built n the middle of the village the road network cannot cope
When the village was blocked the other day sainsburys lorries down the portsmouth road caused chaos
Dont let sainsburys take over liphook
Liphook was a village and can no longer cope longer hours means more traffic

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Otto (17th Mar 2018 - 12:13:02)

Hi GR
Don't worry Sainsburys won't take over Liphook,as there is another supermarket supposedly coming.
But as you say it was 'a village' however with lots of housing estates being built, its inevitable it will and has to change to meet the demands of all these folks coming to live here.
&
Hi Dawn,
when was Sainsburys in Liphook ever 'big', I for one don't think so.Its a very regular size, with very regular lines sold,in fact same old, same old springs to mind again. Its single storey, with just the usual household requirements, plus a few small extras.
May be you should get out of county more and go visit a 'big' Sainsburys.
There are some supermarkets, different brands that are 'big' and perhaps you should visit to give you a better insight into sizes of 'big' supermarkets..you never know you may just learn something from the experience, and even enjoy it!

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- oldie (17th Mar 2018 - 12:32:13)

Recycling noise aside, I don't see why there would need to be any different delivery hours just because the store is open an extra hour or more, delivery times won't be set locally anyway.

As for it being silly building a Sainsburys in the middle of a very congested town, don't forget it wasn't nearly as built up then, the surrounding land was OSU army land and the Sainsburys estate used to be army land too. Newtown was virtually a different village and the station car park was half full!

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- J (17th Mar 2018 - 12:49:55)

It's a bit mean "having no sympathy". If you bought a house on the understanding of the current arrangements then yes you don't really have a right to complain about them. But why shouldn't you complain/comment about the proposal to extend those hours which wasn't on the cards when you purchased said property?

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Helen (17th Mar 2018 - 13:08:11)

Hi Otto I do not know where your info comes from re a new supermarket in liphook? Can you say this with any authority?

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Helen (17th Mar 2018 - 15:18:00)

Damage is already done so it will make no difference, Sainsburys should never have been plonked in the middle of a once lovely village. Supermarket should always have been on old hospital site and Bramshott Place on the OS site. That supermarket is getting bigger, bulging at the seams and always so so busy, what have we done to ourselves...shame.

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Ann (19th Mar 2018 - 14:45:49)

Helen, how would people get to the supermarket without transport if it had been built on the old hospital site.

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- K (20th Mar 2018 - 14:21:06)

Longer opening hours might actually lead to less traffic disruption - People only have so much to spend & maybe it would actually lessen traffic at other times - I for 1 would welcome longer hours don't have to be forced in with all the unruly children & egocentric parents - hey I might have a choice & more pleasurable experience. I do agree there would be some disturbance with deliveries but hey you bought there knowing this may be possible - can't have your cake & eat it ( sorry that wasn't a pun ) It may also help with people being about to move the disreputable people that use Sainsbury's as a hang out after hours - could improve the area security etc.

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Helen (20th Mar 2018 - 16:21:51)

I would say on foot is surely still an option?? Bike, lift from a friend, online delivery, taxi? A super huge supermarket does not need to be in the centre of a village is my point. We have a perfectly sized co-op, with room for another small convenience store at the other end of the village but as my last post, damage has already been done.

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Ann (20th Mar 2018 - 18:10:30)

Helen, you have to take into consideration of the elderly who use Sainsburys. They would not be able to walk all the way to the old hospital or ride a bike to get their shopping. A lot of elderly do not own a computer so would be unable to do an online order. Nothing wrong with having Sainsburys where it is.

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- David (21st Mar 2018 - 08:41:18)

Lots of people on here posting about having 'no sympathy' for anyone living near Sainsbury's. Sounds like you all have a touch of jealousy.

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Helen (21st Mar 2018 - 09:09:57)

Sorry Ann, respect your point but still disagree, a small supermarket or convenience store is more than enough in plenty of surrounding villages - we all coped ok before! My point is moot anyway so let's move on to school traffic... :)

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Jane (21st Mar 2018 - 09:30:54)

Fantastic to have extended opening hours especially the mornings and agree may help with area security too at night. Also pleased there is another small supermarket seems to be on the cards for Liphook too! We need more of everything here rather than having to always travel to other towns to spend our money. Fed up of apologising for lack of restaurants, shops/faciitilites to friends/family when they visit etc and Liphook deserves to have a full array of shops and leisure facilities for all to enjoy.

Still no one can verify whether
there is paperwork to say what will replace Countyrwide

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours

David - jealous of what?

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Jay (22nd Mar 2018 - 21:40:35)

David - seriously? Live on an estate near a large supermarket, a petrol station, relatively close to railway line and a "village" green that regularly hosts funfairs? Hmmmmm, let me see, am I jealous I don't live there? No, I don't think so, I prefer a quieter life though of course, it obviously suits others to live there.

I was expecting a delivery from Sainsburys Liphook between 8 and 9 o'clock yesterday evening.
What has happened. Over £100.
Andrea.

Re: Sainsburys application to extend delivery and opening hours
- Lisa (31st May 2020 - 17:50:44)

Hi Andrea.
Firstly this is a 2year old thread you have added on to and secondly Sainsbury Liphook isn't a online delivery store?! So if you were expecting a food shop it would be via another branch.
