Appalling trains
- Adrian (26th Jan 2018 - 05:01:14)

Well what a week for the wonderfull South Western Railways. Wendesday a small fire put out by the crew causing delays all day and then to top it all a broken rail down in portsmouth area cancelling virtually all trains between Guildford and Portsmouth. Surely a emergency shuttle service could have been set up from say Havant to Guildford 2 per hour each way.
Anyway the new management system at South Western Railways can't work this out and we need to make sure we keep making the delay claims. I DO.

Hi,

How do you make the claim ? Is there an easy way if you have a season ticket or do I need to make a note of the day/time, delay etc. and fill out a paper form ?

thanks in advance

You can do it online on their website. You do have to fill in the times and download a copy of your season ticket. I think they're hoping people won't bother!

I see this morning there was / is:
- faulty tracks outside Waterloo.
- signalling failure at Woking.
- broken down train at Liphook.

Simon
Luckily not using the trains on Monday but for anyone that did remember to claim on their Delay repay scheme on the SWR website.

- Peter (30th Jan 2018 - 18:23:15)

Re above, refund via website works well. Need to wait a couple of weeks for money to come through, also pls be honest re train, time you caught it etc as they do verify your ticket has been put through automated gates.

Re rails - that's Network Rail

Re trains broken - that's the train vendor, leasing company and SWR

Re: Communication of problems/updates

That is down to SWR and it is terrible. (Even compared to the low standards set by SWT!)

Refund site doesn't work well. If one trains leaves a station and they can "assume" you were on it, then they will. Even if you couldn't physically get on the train due to overcrowding and were delayed, you will not get a refund as the assumption is you were on that train. It's disgusting.

- Adrian (14th Feb 2018 - 21:04:55)

Well this week i almost had a full week of almost on time trains, but you can rest assured that South Western Railway will mess that up and today Wed 14 Feb, a passanger being ill down in Rowlands Castle caused a delay of an hour to my train and all other trains were therefore messed up. So in goes yet another Delay Repay Form.

- Mr Sensitive (15th Feb 2018 - 02:37:20)

A passenger being ill really messed your day up? Soree!

I bet it messed their day up too!

Re: Appalling trains
- Isn (15th Feb 2018 - 08:12:29)

No doubt Adrian you would also have a moan if someone jumped in front of a train and the subsequent delays messed up your day. The railways certainly have their problems and complaints are often justified but you’re not going to get much sympathy with your self obsessed rant on this, get over yourself mate

Re: Appalling trains
- lac (15th Feb 2018 - 10:02:20)

I have a real sympathy with both views and I'm sure no callousness is meant.

There is an overarching problem spread across the British approach to fixing problems. In France, Switzerland and Germany, problems with most things are fixed quickly. Trains are not delayed an hour because of illness as they have systems in place to sort things out quickly.

The same applies to road accidents, breakdowns and whatever else is causing the problem. Emergency services arrive quickly and solve the problem. In the UK we seem to think we are wonderful and have nothing to learn from Johnny Foreigner.

Sadly, as someone who has accessed emergency systems and seen them in action both here and abroad, we do have a lot to learn.

As for South Western trains - my initial impressions of their railway running is that they they seem clueless on how to deal with emergencies. South West trains seemed much better at fixing disruption. It's weird as its probably the same staff running the railway.

As for further delays, I can guarantee there will be further illness on trains and sadly more unfortunate people jumping in front of trains. The problem is how to deal with it quickly and get things moving again.

Commuting by train is stressful enough without dealing with constant delays and cancellations. We should expect them to run on time and not be surprised when its running normally. There is a general lack of professional management in the UK. Fixing this is the UKs biggest challenge to future living standards, not just running try railway.

I am shocked by Adrian’s heartless post and by lac’s post, not so heartless but written without knowing the full facts in this particular instance. Adrian is most probably one of those people who fume if they are stuck in traffic because there is a serious road accident. No one likes delays but sometimes they are beyond anyone’s control. All very sad and a reflection of the growing intolerance among some in our society.

Re: Appalling trains
- Petey (15th Feb 2018 - 19:35:21)

I'm sorry but some on here are clearly just WUMs or looking to take offence. I'm pretty sure Adrian and Lac have every sympathy with someone taken ill on a train, we all do. But there's a problem with how we deal with these things in this country, it really takes far too long and causes much bigger problems than is necessary. If there is any kind of issue, SWT and now SWR seem entirely incapable of recovering to a normal level of service quickly. Many fellow commuters and myself feel that they just give up for the day and plan to recover for the following morning until something else goes wrong.

Nobody is suggesting any lack of sympathy for someone being taken ill. It's not about that but about how that situation is handled and SWR are not very good at it. I'd suggest it's to do with cost, they want to take the path of least cost and therefore most profitable to them to resolve, the inconvenience to Joe commuter is irrelevant.
