Sainsburys petrol station
- SDR (3rd Jan 2018 - 10:46:10)

Hello All

Ive only been living in Liphook just over 2 months but is there any cheaper petrol stations around. The sainsburys here seems to be a massive price gouger on fuel here for what I can see is no good reason.

I try to fill up closer to my places of work which are normally 3-4p cheaper but its not always possible.Does anyone know why sainsburys try to rob you blind on fuel or is this a recent thing?

Oh yes, Sainsbury`s petrol heist; I`ve been banging on about this for ages. We regularly go to Colchester to visit daughter, and always use their local Sainsbury petrol cos it`s as much as 5 to 7 p cheaper than Liphook. Trouble is, they have no competition here and saw off the only other petrol outlet that was on the Portsmouth road(Jet) within 9 months to a year from Sainsburys appearing. I do think they take full advantage of this fact of no competitor; we try NOT to buy from them, also for similar reasons avoid using their food store for main shopping. Strange to note as well, the hand car-washers use Sainsbury`s car park for their work but Lidl do not have hand car-washers, despite being a store run mainly by immigrants.

I think Sainsbury’s Head Office do a price check of local filling stations and compete with them so that basically leaves the A3 services and the petrol station at Hindhead, both of which are expensive.

I get my petrol at the Sainsbury’s in Godalming or near my work which are consistently 4p cheaper than Liphook

Welcome to Liphook

An age old Talkback topic - the price of petrol in Sainsbury's. If they can charge over the odds, they will. Demand and Supply, and we have no alternatives in Liphook...........

We should all become Sainsbury's shareholders - no room for complaint then!

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- NB (3rd Jan 2018 - 14:33:42)

ASDA or Tesco significantly (perhaps 10p/l) cheaper than our Sainsburys. Always tend to fill up there if I'm in the area instead of the gross profiteering seen locally.

Is the petrol station at Bordon Tesco cheaper?

- NICK (3rd Jan 2018 - 15:50:58)

If we all stoped going in that price will drop !! , lets have a dont go in week !!

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Sandra (18th Jan 2018 - 19:03:30)

Today's petrol price in sainsburys Liphook 124.9, today's petrol price in sainsburys, Cheshire 112.9

I phoned and asked Liphook petrol station today why that was, and I'm not sure if she should have said, but the young lady told me it's because there's no competition around...

I know we say this a lot, it's unfair etc, but I've emailed head office to complain, maybe if more people do, we may get a fairer price....

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Ian (18th Jan 2018 - 20:21:42)

Cheaper than on the A3 though! Best to drive up to Cheshire then!

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Ann (18th Jan 2018 - 20:45:37)

Fuel is always cheaper at sainsburys in Chichester than it is in liphook sainsburys, very unfair.

Re: Sainsburys petrol station

Asda - Havant/Waterlooville 👍

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Elizabeth (18th Jan 2018 - 21:57:39)

Thanks for sharing Sandra. That's outrageous! I try to buy my fuel nearer work but apart from the A3 there isn't another fuel station on my route. I get stuck in traffic trying to get to a cheaper one and end up wasting time and fuel so often end up crawling into Sainsbury's Liphook desperate for fuel. A few pence is acceptable but the amount you quoted really isn't fair.

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Rob (19th Jan 2018 - 01:22:36)

Sainsbury's in Farnham is regularly at least 5p a litre cheaper, as is Sainsbury's Farlington. No competition and price checking against the shell stations on the A3 doesn't help, just dying fill up there. I'd rather fill up at the shell station in Bordon, same price but better fuel...

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Dawn Hoskins (19th Jan 2018 - 10:15:17)

I go to choir in Godalming and the petrol there is still £1.19 for unleaded,I always make sure I fill up!

If I'm going out on the Bordon/Farnham road I always fill up at the station next to LMC Citroen.

If I get 'caught short' I might just put in a few quid at Sainsbury's but I avoid it out of principle - they are taking the proverbials charging that much.

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- NICK (19th Jan 2018 - 12:54:22)

JET in Godalming 5p less than the rip off sainsburys , i just drop in to Godalming on my way home off the A3 .

All we have to do is stop going in to liphook sainsburys.
it will soon go down.

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Sam Kingshott (19th Jan 2018 - 13:58:06)

Haslemere is more expensive than Sainsbury's.....

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Rick (19th Jan 2018 - 14:20:36)

Today I called into Sainsbury's Farnham, paid £1.229 per litre for diesel.
Other petrol stations nearby charging more.
So why do Sainsburys Liphook, say that they charge the same fuel prices as other local petrol station!!!.

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Sandra (19th Jan 2018 - 18:16:16)

I had a reply from sainsburys today after emailing them,

quote... We want to ensure our petrol stations remain competitive within their local area, offering customers a fair price wherever they live. We therefore adjust the price at each petrol station using locally gathered pricing information.....

We are not getting a fair price, so I emailed them again, sometimes you have to make a point.

I suggest as many as possible send an email or call..

- Tracey (20th Jan 2018 - 13:02:44)

Then perhaps now you will understand that the price increases are now done from Head Office and not the Petrol Station Cashiers who seem to cop all the grief from people like you! Have a thought for them and actually praise them for the job they do for once instead of moaning and getting angry & abusive with them. At the end of the day it’s not their fault and they are only doing their job.

- Rita Tannerman (20th Jan 2018 - 18:02:59)

If you count the Nectar Card points you are able to get when filling up. Does this help counter the extra few pence on the fuel?

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Sandra (20th Jan 2018 - 18:39:12)

Hmmmmm, Not sure what thread you read there Tracy, but it looks pretty obvious to me that nobody has been rude or abusive to the local cashiers, and indeed I personally would have more class than that. We all know, as stated that this is about head office.

I didn't put this information on here for these type of time wasting comments, just purely to pass information to the local community.

Please don't bother to respond!

- Paul (21st Jan 2018 - 11:14:35)

Have complained to Sainsburys about prices in Liphook - would encourage anyone who feels the same to complain via their website to the Head Office directly.

I stopped using the filling station a few months ago, in small protest at the prices they charge. Petrol and diesel is definitely cheaper elsewhere, and I try and fill-up on other journeys.

I have also emailed to register my frustration about the petrol prices.

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- K (22nd Jan 2018 - 09:26:52)

Anybody going near Midhurst 2p per litre cheaper on Diesel & Petrol & although says Spar on building you get Tesco Points ( if you are still collecting ) Wouldn't make a special journey though. - Might help

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Slimetime (22nd Jan 2018 - 10:10:14)

1.16p a liter at the Sainsbury's at Thorpe St Andrew, but Norwich is quite far to go for a fill up.

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Mr Paddy's Daddy (22nd Jan 2018 - 13:59:51)

I too have complained by email about Sainsbury's fuel prices and received a semi-personalized response in which they claim to check against local prices and try to be competitive - which of course is suit speak.

I have replied with my thoughts but also inquired why it is possible to buy fresh carrots in 8, yes 8 different ways, which excludes salad, pre-prepared and stir fry options, tinned and frozen, and yet not one lonely turnip is ever in sight.

I doubt they have a template response, or may be .......

Almost anywhere is cheaper than Liphook. My favourite is Asda Automat, A2150 on way to QA. Usually about 10p cheaper Or Cobham Sainsbury!s going North on A 3.
I believe Morrison’s Woking is very competitive, but I don’t find myself in the area often.

Re: Sainsburys petrol station
- Mary W (22nd Jan 2018 - 16:57:19)

If you download the ASDA app, they quote the prices at their various stores and the nearest is 118.9 & 119,9 for petrol and diesel respectively. It will keep an eye on where you are and show you the nearest.

Just bumping this up it is a documented that the additives in main branded petrol and diesel companies work better for your engine than cheaper supermarket brands.Think carefully as cheaper is not better in this case. You decide
