The Dark Nights.
- R (13th Dec 2017 - 15:16:27)

For those of you that find the dark evenings glum, take heart that yesterday was the darkest evening of the year.

From now on the sun will set just a little bit later each day.

Slightly premature, as I think it it is December 21st

i dont think so i think you will find it is on the 21st

R is correct.
Although the 21st might be the shortest day, the earliest sunset was on 14th Dec and the latest sunrise (gloomiest morning) will be on 27th Dec. This is because the orbit of the Earth is slightly elliptical which makes sunrise and sunset become out of phase.

@A.R and bob.

The 21st has the shortest daylight hours, it is true, but by then we will enjoy another two minutes of light before sunset.

To confuse you even more... the darkest morning is not until the 30th, so that's bad news if you're a morning person.

Not easy to get your head around but this site link might help:-

He/she is right. The earliest sunset was the 12th of December, over a week before the "shortest day" on the 21st. It's the morning sunrise that will continue to be later for the next few days. It's due to the tilt of the earth's axis in relation to the sun (I googled it) .

Thank you R - I was in a mood of utter doom, gloom ad despair thinking I had another 7 days of this misery. I can now rejoice and be even merrier on the 21st

My pleasure Debbie.

Enjoy those two extra minutes of sunlight. : )
