Drugs in Liphook
- Enquiring Parent (20th Oct 2017 - 10:34:44)

Having watched on television last night a programme about the use of drugs in the UK I was just wondering as a local parent with kids in the junior schools what experiences of this worrying trend people have had in the area.

It would be useful to have a measured online debate on this subject. I know periodically there are postings which would lead you to think the drug culture is rife in the village but in my typical middle class stable family life experience in the area I have seen no evidence of any problem. Occasionally I will hear horror stories about widespread drug taking at Bohunt but looking at the kids piling in and out of the school you would not think there is a widespread problem. Likewise I have never seen youths anywhere in the village getting high and that includes walking back home late in the evening across the village from the train station

Drugs are an issue everywhere and as a parent of teenagers I have tried to make sure they know about drugs, the risks and the issues, as well as keeping an environment at home where they can raise anything in discussion (and they do!). When the eldest was going to Bohunt I tried to find information about drugs and was surprised how difficult that was. The above link is to the TALK TO FRANK website where I ended up. I would definately recommend it for information as well as support for anyone who needs it. At the time my eldest started at Bohunt, the BBC (I think) was runnning a hard hitting series on drugs which we watched together. Not pretty viewing, but tells it as it is. You may be able to find that on line. I'm sorry I can't recall the details.

You mention Bohunt, both my kids went there and the staff are very aware of drugs issues and if you have any concerns please go and talk to them directly.

I hope this helps.

Think we all tend to live in a bubble around leafy Liphook and surrounding areas. There is a massive drugs problem everywhere. I drive through Liphook at night and my son will point out people hanging around dealing drugs. Drugs are sold in schools and out of. They are not that expensive. Am told a cigarette containing heroin is just £5.00. These were sold to my son outside the school by drug dealers.
My son has left school now but can tell me of a few friends that have died from drugs overdose unintentionally. These were friends he was using drugs with at school.
Unfortunately shocking as it is we all need to wake up to this modern day problem.

Radford Park

Periodically, the bench on the field has drug debris around it - small plastic bags with evidence of weed and last time I cleared up rubbish there, there was the remains of a new pink substance that I'd not seen before.in a couple of the small bags. I usually pick up the rubbish as always have extra poo bags - and definitely pick up remains of weed and bin it.

A small percentage of kids from about 15 onwards will start to get into drugs, usually based on peer pressure (so usually a whole group of friends will experiment with 'something they were given at a party'). Most will not go on to become addicts but within the group it will be kept very secret from the parents!

I've lived in Liphook for many years and my children were all schooled here. Drugs have always been available to those who seek them and all we can do as parents is equip them with the knowledge they need to be responsible adults in all areas of life. My children never got caught up in this awful situation and I would like to think that any child brought up with good values and a strong support system would be the same. I often read about the drug dealing going on in the area but have never actually witnessed it myself. I'm not so naive as to think that it isn't happening but please let's not try to intimate that Liphook is a den of iniquity. Teenagers will be teenagers and my heart goes out to those parents whose children, despite their best efforts have chosen the wrong path. Liphook is a lovely place to live and is certainly no worse than any other village in the area.

Are drugs available in Liphook? Of course! Where are they taken? Everywhere.

Not at all being flippant, but yes there is a drugs scene in Liphook as there is in virtually every town and village up and down the country. Whether it's teenagers around the back of the block, adults in pubs, bodybuilders in gyms, or people in their own homes - everything up to Class A is readily available. And we're not even into the argument about alcohol as an addictive substance yet - in which case very quickly we will probably all know someone who drinks a bit too much for their own good.

However, it's less visible in some areas, and if we fancy describing the demographics of Liphook in certain ways then we can understand why it's less obvious than other comparators. And if you simply haven't come across it yourself or are confident that your children haven't, then I commend you for living a good life and for most likely raising your children as decent and smart people who know how to avoid the local drugs scene.
