Road Works Longmoor Road
- Mrs (5th Oct 2017 - 13:10:44)

Is anybody else getting fed up with road works :-(. They are digging up the pavement which makes walking along there a danger to your health.

Traffic is now back up to the A3 trying to get into the village, sign said 18 weeks it has now been 26!

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Ann (5th Oct 2017 - 14:35:16)

I don`t see why they have had to put a roundabout there - not one at the entrance to the Avenue.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Ian (5th Oct 2017 - 15:35:20)

It does seem to be taking a heck of a long time, I hope the contractors are subject to a penalty clause if they have gone over the promised completion times. It looks an absolute mess and does not seem to have progressed for ages. That being said it is nice that traffic is slower on the road now

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Helen (5th Oct 2017 - 18:03:36)

I was advised against using the footpath that goes behind this development on Tuesday by one of the contract builders. I asked why and was informed it was v wet, I asked if he had been there recently and he said no. In reality it was completely fine and dry. The path behind showed that there is v little progress beyond the roundabout.. just a small area of groundworks so it will no doubt be a feature of Liphook life for sometime.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- J (5th Oct 2017 - 23:32:56)

It took me 20 minutes to get through the traffic on Longmoor road, son late to the train for college. Will be claiming my fuel to get said child to college.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Dawn Hoskins (6th Oct 2017 - 12:07:01)

J
what do you mean you will be claiming your fuel?
From who?

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Robert (7th Oct 2017 - 10:57:48)

Yes it is crazy, they've managed to complete a much more complicated junction at whitehill in less time. Half the time there doesn't look too be anyone don't anything on the "roadworks". I don't see why they have put in such a large roundabout and then put it off set from the existing road line. Crazy.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- J (9th Oct 2017 - 11:40:34)

Dawn, I will be putting a claim from the building company. Most of the men seem to be talking or smoking and not working.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Dawn Hoskins (9th Oct 2017 - 16:31:56)

J - I will read your progress with interest as this sort of claim has never before succeeded.
I hope you will let us know the outcome

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Ian (9th Oct 2017 - 18:17:35)

J - likewise look forward to an update on your claim. As many have noted, these road works have been in place for an awful long time now and have very much become part of the daily traffic issues in Liphook such as the school run. (I am tempted to bill Strowger for making Bohunt so popular that I waste so much of my time trying to get round the village at certain times).

I am not of the legal profession but I suspect you may be advised to simply allow more time for your journey. However we are in a world where someone is always to blame so you might get lucky ;-)

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- M Way (10th Oct 2017 - 06:57:34)

Claim for fuel are you serious

You must have known road works were there?
Did you not allow extra time for your journey?
20 mins late what’s that maybe a 1/2 a cup of fuel £1.20 a litre so whats that 30p
A great use of our legal system

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Mrs (10th Oct 2017 - 12:11:06)

Dear M-Way

I live approx 2 miles from the road works, I did leave in plenty of time to make sure we had enough to catch said train. Due the fact it took me 20 mins to get through said traffic lights, I had to take my son in all the way to college. That is the reason i said about the cost of fuel.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- david (10th Oct 2017 - 12:55:02)

Dear Mrs

Did you not think to throw a u turn, get back onto the A3 and come off at the next junction and get to the station via The London Road?

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Commuter (10th Oct 2017 - 13:07:47)

Calm down everyone. It seems J was just sounding off. M-way, do you really think anyone is going to pursue a claim through our legal system for this?

Such comments are borne out of frustration. A housing development that local people did not want as far as I can determine (anecdotally), coupled with a snail's-pace progress of the highway works inconveniencing people whom you might imagine the developers would want to keep on side.

As others have commented elsewhere on Talkback, major road construction projects get completed in less time than the 'souffle' roundabout works are taking. I know that local authorities can fine utility companies where road works overrun, is this also true of EHDC planning-approved private housing developments, I wonder? I can't see anything in EHDC's planning approval notice concerning the length of time the highway amenity can be disrupted.

Hmm.
It seems that J and Mrs are one and the same!

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- lac (11th Oct 2017 - 10:49:45)

I notice the "road calming" measures are moving down Longmoor Rd. These seem to consist of creating "pinch points" to slow the traffic down. I regard these as very dangerous. They do slow traffic down but create more hazard by increasing the probability of a kerb strike and a catastrophic tyre blow out. One of these "pinch points" has been placed at the apex of a bend. It will only be a matter of time before a car strikes this and heads off into the trees with potentially fatal consequences. (even at 30 mph!) What's worse is that this spot is notorious for icy patches in winter in the early morning. In the meantime the speed limit approaching the Old Thorns turn off is still 60mph. I do wonder if anyone at Hampshire actually drive down the roads and assess hazards from the drivers point of view. As a pedestrian I'd be more worried about cars losing control in this now barmy section of road than I would be of cars speeding.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- A (11th Oct 2017 - 11:48:50)

Can they have calming measures in a 60mph zone? I can't say I've ever seen that before and it doesn't seem at all sensible, I agree.

Perhaps the speed limit will be changed to 30mph once the roadworks are complete?

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Ann (11th Oct 2017 - 15:16:55)

I totally agree with Lac - dark bit of road too from turning right out of the Deers Hut. I can see accidents happening.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Richard (17th Oct 2017 - 22:48:53)

The whole thing is just borderline farcical.

The roundabout is bonkers enough. Wrong place to build one, the road just isn't suited. To compound that basic idiocy they've built it too close to existing driveways and given them obstructed sight lines. Accidents are virtually guaranteed.

But that wasn't sufficiently daft for Hampshire County Council Highways. Oh no, they had another ace to play: traffic calming.

Having had the pleasure of a stroll down to the deers hut this weekend I can tell you that HCC appear actively determined to get someone killed. What was already the most dangerous corner in the village has now been enhanced with 'calming measures' on both approaches, forcing vehicles running in both directions into the middle of the road a few metres ahead of the blind bend. It doesn't take much foresight to imagine what is going to happen when cars approach at speed from both directions at the same time, especially when ice cakes the road as it often does there. This of course presents no issues to the bright sparks at HCC highways.

We can all now look forward to increased council tax premiums resulting from the inevitable legal actions.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Debbie (18th Oct 2017 - 07:11:31)

Am I alone in thinking that the latest traffic calming pinch points between the entrance to The Avenue and the large lay-by are a long long way from the new roundabout? Perphaps someone can explain to me the point of them being there! It’s not to bad at the moment at school run time because of the man with his stop/go sign but once he’s gone I think it’s going to be a nightmare!

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Paul (18th Oct 2017 - 08:33:01)

It is one of the worst construction sites I've ever seen. It's probably just me, but at night it's bloody awful trying to navigate the unlit pinch points, dozens of cones, lines of steel signs sticking into the road - let alone the odd camber of the magic roundabout and the various cobbles all over the place ...

Surprised I haven't destroyed my wheels, clipped a sign, or ended up somewhere I shouldn't be due to all the combinations of road works.

It must be a nightmare for pedestrians and cyclists.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- annoyed (18th Oct 2017 - 09:16:59)

It is also impractical when a lot of traffic needs to bypass through Liphook due to traffic on the A3.
Yesterday, with the accident north bound, lots of traffic was heading through Liphook instead and when we got to the traffic lights by Old Thorns, ended up sitting through 2 red light changes because a coach could not get through the pinch point. It is ridiculous. That situation won't go away even without the roadworks.
Also, then as we got towards Bohunt, we queued AGAIN, due to the roadworks there, with a man controlling the traffic.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Jack (18th Oct 2017 - 10:19:15)

I won't let my child walk to school, due the big holes in the pavement where they have dug it up for the new pinch points.

Also no street lights, so god help us when the clocks change and the children that are not so lucky to have a lift home have to walk home.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Anon (23rd Oct 2017 - 12:47:27)

Finish date extended AGAIN.

How many cowboys does it take to build a lop sided roundabout? YEEE HAAA!

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Ann (23rd Oct 2017 - 15:15:13)

Job seems never ending!! How many more layers of tarmac stuff are they going to put on!!! It would never surprise me to see the lop sided roundabout taken away and back to a normal road!!

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- C (23rd Oct 2017 - 15:49:35)

I have just walked passed the roundabout and it looks almost finished and they have put in street lights but the tops aren't on them. Didn't notice the date, when is it extended to? I live on Longmoor rd about 300 yrds from the roundabout and I'm getting fed up with queuing to just get off my drive! But all the holes have done, all looks complete just filling on the Tarmac around the central reservations. Fingers crossed it's open by the end of the half term :)

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Ann (23rd Oct 2017 - 17:45:24)

Glad to say the traffic lights have gone!

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Ann (24th Oct 2017 - 07:57:11)

Sad to say the traffic lights are back this morning!

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Julian (24th Oct 2017 - 09:32:33)

Might be worth making a Freedom of Information Request to HCC to see how much this disaster has cost the tax payer?

How can anyone build a lop-sided roundabout on a flat area?

Julian.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- For Goodness Sake! (30th Oct 2017 - 15:15:19)

According to roadworks.org the end date has been put back AGAIN.

This time to 10th November making a it a nice round 7 MONTHS that this 10 week job has now taken.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Ann (1st Nov 2017 - 07:53:14)

The traffic lights are not always there but I have come to the conclusion that they are there in the mornings so that work lorries etc can park on the roundabout!

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- lac (1st Nov 2017 - 09:41:03)

I drove this obstacle course last night, which apart from the lighting actually being on, was close to finishing. I have driven over 500,000 miles in my motoring lifetime and this traffic calming scheme, with pinch points, is one of the most dangerous I have ever seen. There will be a head on collision at a 60mph combined speed or vehicles going off road and hitting trees. Pinch point kerbs, misjudgement by other drivers, and the usage of the road by large trucks will inevitably cause casualties. There are too many pinch points and in places where they are not needed or dangerous. The road is not well lit enough either and unless they bring in 40mph from A3 to the 30mph limit, non locals will be travelling dangerously fast on the approach. I am puzzled by "road safety" measures solely aimed at reducing speed which merely increase the risk to road users. Humans make mistakes and increasing the chances of making mistakes on the road is a serious error.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- A (1st Nov 2017 - 09:52:59)

Totally agree - it's utterly absurd that a 60mph zone, where some people WILL be doing 60mph, drops straight to a 30mph zone at the first pinch point. Why can't there be some simple common sense applied in these situations - given the increased traffic turning into Old Thorns it's rare that you can achieve 60 in that zone which actually makes it all the more dangerous on the rare occasions when the road is clear.

It HAS to be 40mph from the A3 turnoff - how do we get this changed?

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Jacqui (1st Nov 2017 - 09:55:17)

I agree with all of "lac"s post. What will it take to get this mess sorted out a DEATH, I do hope not.

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Faye (1st Nov 2017 - 18:28:22)

I concur with Ann’s theory!

Re: Road Works Longmoor Road
- Jane Ives (1st Nov 2017 - 20:44:12)

This was discussed last November by the Parish Council when there was a traffic order proposal issued by Hampshire County Council.

The Parish Council objected to the plans to keep the national speed limit but unfortunately this was not supported. Here's the link to the minutes of the meeting but basically the council wanted to reduce the national speed limit to 40mph.
