Carnival Advertising
- Karen Feeney (23rd Sep 2017 - 09:28:07)

Morning everyone! We've had the kind offer from Homes Estate Agents to put boards up to advertise the forthcoming carnival. If you live on one of the roads around the village (or any where locally) and would be willing to help us and put a board up in your garden could you please give me a call or message me over the weekend! Thanks in advance! 07788 924791. karendowsett@aol.com

Karen, I thought the boards were meant to be promoting the Carnival, all they seems to be doing is advertising the agent! They don't even appear to have gone to the cost of producing slips for their boards, they just seem to have photocopied onto a bit of A4 paper and pinned to their boards. Not exactly promoting the event, just themselves, very shabby

Re: Carnival Advertising
- David (16th Oct 2017 - 12:05:22)

Quite agree Racheil, wasn't the idea to promote the event rather than an estate agent!! Can hardly read the words on the paper either

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Bob (16th Oct 2017 - 20:38:33)

Karen sadly you have been duped by said estate agent . These signs are a great advert for Homes and that's it A4 plastic sheet is impossible to read . I accept they are sponsoring carnival that's great but hey put more effort in to signs all they are is bleeding ugly stuck every where clever for them not so for carnival don't see them making any impact at all

Re: Carnival Advertising
- David (16th Oct 2017 - 22:14:46)

I have one of these outside my house and to be honest I feel like taking it down as it is completely pointless in regard to promoting the carnival.

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Sally Cameron (16th Oct 2017 - 22:28:51)

In an ideal world we would have huge signs promoting the Carnival. Homes Estate Agents are not only covering the cost of the boards, but contributing to the cost of the Carnival.
The A4 signs can easily be read by those on foot and Homes Estate Agents get some advertising as a supporter of Liphook Carnival.
If anyone would like to get involved or make a donation please feel free to contact myself on sallyann235@hotmail.com

Homes have been very cynical about this, they have gone to minimum of expense to use the carnival to get advertising for themselves for the next two weeks. I recall that when Keats advertised the carnival last year they at least went to the expense of having customised slips made for their boards so the carnival could be advertised properly, not just sticking a laminated A4 sheet of paper on a board clearly designed to advertise the agent, NOT the carnival. There are many contributors to the carnival but not all are doing so in such a cynical and manipulative way

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Lucy (17th Oct 2017 - 06:08:57)

The signs are not readable at all. I appreciate that Homes have already sponsored the carnival though and this was.just an added extra.

Maybe if the laminated sheets were A3 with larger writing and some colour to make it more eye-catching.

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Bob (17th Oct 2017 - 22:02:57)

To say Homes have covered cost of board is innacurate they are the signs they put up for any house sale they deal with just a sponsored by pinned on and that should be liphook carnival sponsored by Homes I know we the public are being picky but you are supposed to be able to read both walking and driving Both are impossible take them down Please

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Ann (18th Oct 2017 - 07:08:36)

Bob do you happen to be an alternative estate agent?
Any help carnival can get is welcome be it in a small or large way.
obviously people are reading this judged by comments.
Hope you get out there and support this event that has been happening for over 100 years.

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Kate (18th Oct 2017 - 08:23:29)

Ann. Do you happen to work for homes? I think the point being raised that you are missing is that these boards are not supporting the carnival , they are simply advertising the agent. I work in marketing (not locally so I have no axe to grind) and frequently use agents to advertise community events but in every case the agents get bespoke slips made for their boards so the event is advertised at least as prominently as the agent. Of course sponges want to see a return on their investment but in this case the commitment seems minimal as these boards simply do not sufficiently advertise the carnival. As someone else said the committee has been conned

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Kayleigh (18th Oct 2017 - 14:36:00)

I have one of these boards outside my home and have really debated with taking it down. I thought the estate agents were supporting the event, they have an a4 sheet of laminated paper stapled to the post, very disappointing. I feel they could have got supporting boards made to go on the board not just a piece of paper.
Such a shame and yes I do feel like taking the board down!

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Float Builder (19th Oct 2017 - 12:20:45)

Personally I think they have done a grand job. Advertising is all about people reading the advert and then to let everyone know that hasn’t read it, which this thread seem to have done extremely well. So stop bitching and start building. If all of you built a float we would have a wonderful carnival. Please support all our wonderful carnival volunteers who are doing a fantastic job.

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Emma (19th Oct 2017 - 16:05:32)

This was such a shame to read! Liphook talkback has just become a place for people to rant about silly matters. I would be very interested to know how many of these people that are moaning are involved with the carnival this year, other than just putting a board outside your house!

I personally have used local estate agents to sponsor our business events in the past and it has always been our (the event organisers) responsibility to provide the posters to be attached to the boards provided by the estate agents. Therefore perhaps it wasn’t Homes that produced these posters?

In addition there is a cost to any estate agent to erect a board, whether this is when selling a house, sponsoring an event etc, so therefore each of these boards would have cost Homes. Those claiming that these are not at an additional cost to the agent are not correct.

If people wanted to see more of the carnival budget put into the advertising of the carnival instead of logistics and all the other areas that create this event then why not raise this with the carnival committee. I am sure if there was an overwhelming consensus on this matter more of Homes sponsorship contribution could be used for better boards?

It is so sad to see so much negativity from those in Liphook about a very community focused event. I hope that it will not put off other local businesses from supporting the carnival in the future, because without this support the carnival would not be able to run!

And before you ask no I do not work for homes, I work for an events company and understand and appreciate all the hard work that goes into running an event such as this. And I know just how important it is to have support from local businesses!

Stop moaning and start getting involved! The carnival is what we all make it!

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Rachael (19th Oct 2017 - 20:13:18)

Emma, the issue being raised by these comments on the post isn't one of support of the carnival, of course we all enjoy the event and wish it well!

The issue is that Karens original post asked for addressees as Homes had offered to advertise the event using their boards. Clearly Homes have cynically done the bare minimum to promote the carnival and have instead used it as an opportunity to promote themselves. As other contributors have observed the boards do not mention the carnival at all which is only mentioned on a tacky cheap bit of laminated A4

Like you I have organised many events where other agents have offered to advertise and they have managed to get produced customised slips to attach to the boards that are clearly visible. Homes used these same boards in Rake earlier in the year so their only cost as been to laminate the A4 sheets and have the boards put up, a small cost for so much advertising and minimal benefit to the carnival and community

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Lucy (19th Oct 2017 - 22:00:30)

In response to Emma’s comments about the poster, I would just like to correct you, Emma. I think you will find that the brief came directly from Homes to produce an A4 sized poster. Please do not blame anyone on the carnival committee for this. I think its about time we focused our efforts on supporting all those who volunteer their time and efforts.

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Sally Cameron (20th Oct 2017 - 07:41:10)

Delighted to report Homes Estate Agents have listened to the comments. The posters have been re-designed and increased in size. This has been carried out at their own expense and will not affect the contribution to this years Liphook Carnival. Thank you for your continued support. Sally Cameron

Re: Carnival Advertising
- MOG (20th Oct 2017 - 08:10:13)

Good Morning All,, I would like to say that with all the negative comments, this will, put current sponsors or possible future sponsors off from supporting such an amazing community event in the future. ALL Support and help to advertise the event surely is better than no support.

You can only fit so much onto a small notice to enable everyone to read it who passes by. Irrespective who puts a notice board up, they are helping to enable the carnival to be advertised so people know when it is taking place.

The carnival committee I am sure have done a great, no fantastic job in bringing all the elements for the evening together with some amazing sponsorships. Without the dedicated work of the committee and the sponsors this wouldn't be happening. So please put everything into perspective and appreciate all the help the community gives to support this wonderful event.

Every little help will make the evening a fantastic night for family and friends, so I would like to say thanks to all that support the carnival, irrespective how small the advert is, whether it's in a shop window or on a notice board from an estate agent.

Have a wonderful evening on Saturday and thanks to all the committee and Sponsors, as without them, it would be a dull night in Liphook.

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Dave (20th Oct 2017 - 08:59:54)

Yes well done, they have used the colour setting on the photocopier and used A3 paper drawer instead. 50 pence a copy rather than 4 pence.
Much more effective than having proper advertising slips made. No amount of spin will alter the fact this was a con

Re: Carnival Advertising
- Emma (20th Oct 2017 - 09:41:47)

Pleased to see that Homes have responded to the negative comments and actively tried to resolve this.

I have noticed that my past comment seems to have been misunderstood slightly.

Lucy I was not in any way trying to blame the carnival committee. I have been involved with the carnival for over 20 years and I am extremely proud and appreciative of just how hard the committee and volunteers work. Previous comments had suggested that Homes had poorly produced the posters, I was simply suggesting that Homes may not have produced these posters.

Rachael I understand your point, however I feel that the focus of this post has detracted from the whole contribution that Homes have made to the carnival. These boards are a small part of their contribution and I think this has been lost in this post. As s a sponsor they have every right to promote their company, whether people agree or like the way they do this is a personal opinion.

Just imagine if all those that came on talkback to moan about things actually got involved and produced floats or volunteered, the event would be amazing, just a thought! Every year on talkback the carnival is discussed in a negative way and its these comments and threads that will ruin the event for everyone else.

Re: Carnival Advertising
- IS (20th Oct 2017 - 11:39:13)

Hi - I don't think anyone is at all critical of the Carnival or the Carnival Committee. Its a great community event and the committee do a great job. I think the negativity is simply aimed at the agent who have made a right pigs ear of promoting the event. You also don't have to be a sponsor or put together a float to contribute, just attending adds to the success of the event

I note that the Funfair is giving the Carnival more publicity than the Official sponsor.
