Idiot cyclist
- Peef (16th Aug 2017 - 10:17:45)

Astonished, but sadly not surprised, to come face to face with a moron on a bike at the new roundabout in Longmoor Road. He had completely ignored the temporary lights and was putting himself, myself and the car behind me in danger when I had to slam on the brakes. Then, the arrogant moron has the front to mouth abuse at me. Mate, if you're reading this, you could not possibly have been more in the wrong and more stupid with what you did. Oh, and I'm a regular cyclist. I wait at those lights when I'm on my bike, you should too.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- liz (16th Aug 2017 - 12:57:32)

Peef

You should know that red lights and pedestrians crossings (and even pedestrians!) are not something cyclists need to take account of!

OK that's not true at all - but unfortunately the arrogant minority seem to be becoming the arrogant majority and nobody appears to want to stand up to them. I don't really understand as they seem quite oblivious to their own safety as well as that of others (as you found out).

They have no insurance or visible ID so if they were to cause an accident or injure someone it would be very difficult to make a claim against them.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Penny (16th Aug 2017 - 15:56:07)

Cyclists are becoming increasingly intolerant of other road users and that includes horses and their riders, particularly on country lanes. The majority really are arrogant with no sense of danger to themselves or anyone else.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Higar (16th Aug 2017 - 20:22:01)

Just be aware that the cyclist may have gone through the lights on green but they then may have changed whilst they were cycling through the road works. I witnessed this last week.

Get a dash cam I have one and u can catch it all lol

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Paul (17th Aug 2017 - 08:41:06)

You have the love the usual car v cyclist debate .... always entertaining but isn't it time we had some new stereotypes?!

There are idiot cyclists and idiot drivers. Drivers have dash cams, a lot of cyclists have GoPro's.

Maybe in 20 years when we are all in electric self-driving cars the cyclists will have a free-for-all and the cars will simply avoid them?!

Re: Idiot cyclist
- liz (17th Aug 2017 - 10:25:42)

Paul

I am very cautious around cyclists when I am driving. I only wish they would extend me the same courtesy as a pedestrian. With a few exceptions, they don't. I don't jaywalk - I am talking about cyclists ignoring pedestrian crossings and red lights even when all the other traffic has stopped. Then of course there are those that cycle on the pavements...

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Ian (17th Aug 2017 - 11:09:31)

There certainly has been an increase in the number of middle aged Lycra clad pillocks that cycle around at breakneck speaks shouting at motorists and pedestrians alike to get out of the way. Does seem to be a growing problem, just look at you tube to see the growing number of these idiots that almost seem to wear their aggression and intolerance as a badge of honour. And the very worst are those big groups on country lanes that justify their selfishness as defensive positioning, MORONS!

Re: Idiot cyclist
- JD (17th Aug 2017 - 11:43:25)

Not just the cyclist that has gone through this red light. Yesterday around 6.40pm a car decided to, they had to reverse back up ontop of the roundabout to let everyone through.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Penny (17th Aug 2017 - 13:27:37)

This was reported today on the BBC. In addition it should be noted that the cyclist had his front brake removed and he was not wearing a helmet. Irresponsible or what!

“A cyclist accused of killing a woman by ploughing into her on his racing bike has told a court that having a front brake "would have made no difference".

Charlie Alliston, then aged 18, was allegedly going at 18mph when he hit Kim Briggs as she crossed Old Street in Shoreditch, London, in February 2016.

Mr Alliston, who denies manslaughter, was riding a fixed wheel track bike with no front brake at the time.
The crash could have been avoided if one had been fitted, prosecutors say.

Mrs Briggs, a 44-year-old HR consultant, suffered "catastrophic" head injuries and later died in hospital, the trial at the Old Bailey has heard.

Mr Alliston, who is now 20, is said to have shouted at the mother of two as she lay mortally injured, later blaming her for the collision in posts he made online.
Jurors were told that Mr Alliston talked of removing his front brake from a previous bike in a tweet in February 2015, comparing the experience of riding it to being in a "Lucas Brunelle movie".”

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Aled (17th Aug 2017 - 14:31:49)

In my experience I have found horse riders far more intolerable than cyclists off road. When I have been running I always make sure there is adequate room for a horse to pass, often putting myself into a bramble bush and never a thank you.

When was the last time that a horse rider came and cleared the sh*t that they leave behind on the roads?

Re: Idiot cyclist
- liz (17th Aug 2017 - 15:00:43)

Aled

As a former horse rider there is no excuse for riders not to say thank you and in my experience most do. As for what the horses leave on the roads - as every country person knows it is very good for the roses!

Good try at changing the subject though!

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Dave W (17th Aug 2017 - 16:41:45)

I have long thought that cyclists should have compulsory insurance by law. The criminal court case that's going on in London as I write this, where a cyclist riding a track bike with no brakes hit a female pedestrian who died as a result, perfectly illustrates this point.

If cyclists had to be insured; this would moderate the behaviour of the irresponsible who totally ignore every single traffic law and regulation and finally bring them to their senses through their wallets.

The ongoing prosecution, is I believe the first of its kind and may finally bring about a realisation that some sort of regulation is needed to control an out of control situation. Insurance is the one tool that could do this and after the outcome of this court case, I shall be writing to my MP.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Penny (18th Aug 2017 - 13:09:27)

Just a thought. If cyclists are compelled by law to have insurance and I personally think they should then in the case of an accident the cyclist should be breathalised as well.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- i (19th Aug 2017 - 13:00:47)

have you thought that the cyclist may not have time to get to the otherside of the lights before they changed and that actually the cyclists are completely inncocent. i used to have to cycle that road everyday and it is more dangerous than the A3! Motorists give verry little room and are very impatient with cyclists along this rout.

give cyclists a break!

Re: Idiot cyclist
- i (19th Aug 2017 - 13:05:02)

also the insurance idea, your going to ask a 12 year old to get insurance? so he can cycle down the road to meet his friends? bit OTT.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Aresident (19th Aug 2017 - 18:19:36)

Just get the round about finished, and get rid of lights

Re: Idiot cyclist
- P Weyland (21st Aug 2017 - 13:25:42)

The traffic lights between Budds Lane and Hogmoor Rd are the same - not phased for cyclists.

Even if I'm at the front and it turns green ,pedaling as fast as I can and I wont make it before it turns green the other end. No doubt a few motorists have maybe thought I jumped a red.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Penny (21st Aug 2017 - 17:09:26)

In response to i’s post I would respond by saying, no of course children cannot take out insurance but depending on the child’s age, parents can be held responsible for the actions of the child. So if for example the child causes an accident the parents would be the ones who have to pay compensation to the other injured party.
In response to P Weyland’s post, Peef said in his post that the cyclist had “completely ignored the temporary lights”. Quite different from cycling past a temporary light that is green, but turns red before cyclist reaches 2nd traffic light. I accept that could possibly happen, but in my personal experience I have found, particularly when there is a long barrier there is ample time (sometimes frustratingly long for the waiting motorist) for a cyclist to get from one light safely to other.
I am sure there are responsible cyclists, but from my own experiences they are few and far between. They often ride without high viz jackets, without lights, heads down looking neither right or left with complete disregard for other road uses.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- liz (22nd Aug 2017 - 10:47:51)

Perhaps listening to music on headphones while you are cycling on public roads is also something to be looked at.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- dave (22nd Aug 2017 - 15:29:22)

Liz, Would you also ban listening to music while driving on public roads?

Re: Idiot cyclist
- liz (23rd Aug 2017 - 07:13:24)

Dave

Headphones are not advisable if you are driving a car. Also cyclists are more at risk as they do not have mirrors to see what is behind them.

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Mary W (24th Aug 2017 - 10:43:31)

I have a lot of sympathy for cyclists, they have every right to be on the roads and it isn't their fault that cycle tracks are not supplied as a matter of course as in other more forward looking countries.

But cyclists should also realise that some of them on racing bikes go very fast, they are not always all that obvious, and they make very little sound. I say this after nearly being involved in a collision as one appeared, going very fast downhill as I was flashed to come out of Down Lane (from Watts Gallery) onto the B 3000. Despite there being a small roundabout and two major junctions, he did not slow his speed at all. It was terrifying, and he could have been killed. His speed round the corner downhill must have been 40, at a conservative estimate.

Do they still have bells? How do they alert others to their presence as they whizz silently up out of nowhere?

Re: Idiot cyclist
- Penny (24th Aug 2017 - 13:45:01)

I do not have any sympathy for any road user whether they be a driver, cyclist, horserider or pedestrian if they are doing something which is dangerous or inconsiderate or both. With regard to cycle lanes, in the present financial climate I feel that this is not a priority when one hears about the cuts in social care, hospitals, schools etc etc. All that is needed to prevent accidents is for people to think and behave intelligently and consider the needs of other road users. It is not too much, to ask or is it?

Re: Idiot cyclist
- James (24th Aug 2017 - 15:01:11)

We are all potential cyclists. No need to put on any special clothes either. Cheap form of transport that has huge health benefits. I think what puts people off is sharing the roads with cars with very little protection. One time I was cycling down Longmoor road and the lady car driver with kids in the back of her car, decided to overtake me at the very point there is a traffic island in the middle of the road - frightening. As a driver I look out for and show patience dealing with cyclists - as they have been on the roads longer and are much better for the environment. As a cyclist I pay the same respect to people walking due to the same reasons (longer on roads and environmentally the most friendly)
