What happened to the rain?
- Peter (22nd Jun 2017 - 12:45:59)

Promised by forecasters yesterday and again this morning, along with thunderstorms etc, Wunderground.com suggested rain between 9.15am to 9.30am, had 6 drops and a few rumbles of thunder south west of Liphook - no rain.

I guess the weather didn't check out Wunderground.com?

The big challenge to forecasting for the British Isles is that their weather systems come predominantly from over the Atlantic, which doesn't have much in the way of conventional weather information, except for a few ship reports and aircraft observations.  This means the structure and evolution of weather systems aren't known as well as they have to be in order to make the most accurate forecasts possible.  It's that lack of weather data that makes forecasting for England so difficult to forecast accurately.

How can a weather forecaster promise rain when forecasting means speculating about a future event?

They are getting better at forecasting the probabilities for the next few days, but I can still think of plenty times they've gone spectacularly wrong!
