BT or PlusNet?
- Jay W (14th Mar 2017 - 13:56:05)

Any thoughts on BT vs PlusNet as broadband providers in the area please?

Have BT (unlimited Infinity 2 fibre broadband), line rental and evening/weekend calls but paying £54.99 pm about to increase again in April by a small amount. No issues with the service.

Looking around and understanding BT own PlusNet, can get same deal from PlusNet for £34 pm or with anytime calls £38 pm. So basically a £20 pm saving.

Phoned BT to "discuss" and got it reduced down by £10 pm.

Does anyone have experience of a recent change (do you have to change router, does engineer need to visit etc) or is BT £120 pa better than PlusNet?

I switched to plusnet (no fibre here yet though) last year and have had no issues. Was just lots cheaper than BT directly (who annoyed me when they failed to pay me the compensation that they promised for a 4-5 month wait for connection).

We moved to PlusNet a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it for landline and broadband, we continued with our existing router.

I'm in the Canada Way estate where it is fibre to the cabinet only, which would be the same whichever provider you choose.

Speeds are ok - download 39Mbs and upload 8Mbs.

Colleagues at work manage near 100 BT lines over UK, those are business lines so am very aware of BT support and yet despite my good knowledge on BT I have chosen to use Plusnet at home and have yet to have an issue.

BT sadly have become too large to effectively support you, you need to know how to play the game to get them onboard with a problem as they are fantastic at the fob off. Plusnet support is better.

BT Equipment is slightly better than Plusnets provided. PS am talking only internet here, no idea on the phones part of the deals at all but overall I see no reason to pay BT extra money, it’s not a guarantee of a better service/support/speed.

Was with BT business and residential, was sold a duff phone system, had to sue them in Aldershott Court...and won. Just found out they have billed a line I didn't have since 2011, spent 20 hours on the phone getting to the bottom of it, and as many emails. BT refused to take up the matter of the overcharge until I wrote to the Chairman again. They say they wont pay interest on the £2k they owe me, and I can whistle for any interest. Steer clear of BT, not a provider that look after their customers. We have given all our business to Plusnet.

BT own Plusnet

We have always been with BT but with their recent price increase decided to look around for a better deal, BT would have charged us around £30/month for standard unlimited broadband with weekend calls.
We've ended up going with Sky for Unlimited Broadband, Line Rental and evening and weekend calls (includes to mobiles) for around £20/month (we don't have fibre availability) as they are giving 12months free broadband at the moment.
Change over went fine, new router supplied (had to pay £9 for delivery) and we believe we have better internet connection as we can now watch BBC iplayer in HD without any form of breakup, which it did before. Strange as it's all the same equipment except for the router.
BT tried to charge us £46 as we cancelled the contract early but we argued they shouldn't as we cancelled within 30 days of their price rise, they are now cancelling that charge, they actually now owe us some money.
Recommend having a look around and choose the best deal for you after also checking on support ratings.

Hi,

I have very recently had an absolute nightmare with BT, and was so relieved to get away from them. Definitely not a fan of their pricing or hurrendous 'customer service'!

Just to throw it in there, what about Talk Talk??

We have been with them for a few years now and very competitive.....cheaper than plus net for what we want.
I am paying about £35 for the full package including unlimited calls (day and night, including mobiles), TV plus which includes the recording box, line rental and international calls. Oh and that includes their superfast fibre broadband deal. Depends on what you are after but I have not had problems with them.

Def, stay away from BT though, too big for their own boots now
