Good to get organised early! Perhaps if groups need materials etc they could post on here.
I think we are going to give it a go this year, not sure how good it will be but I'm sure it will be fun!

I think the carnival will only happen if there is a new chairman as the current one has stepped down!

We are disappointed that our lovely Karen is stepping down, but she has done a brilliant job for 10 years now. Nobody has come forward to take on the role, but be in no doubt, there will be a Carnival in 2017!

I would love to do a float with my friends and family, but someone said we needed insurance and for children to be on a float it's sky high?

Is this true? Or course we could just walk but I think the ones on floats are best!

The carnival committee can help you as they have names of insurance companies it is not a massive cost to be safe good luck and please join in with a float and well done for considering it

I am not part of the Carnival Committee, so cannot speak officially, but certainly insurance is an important consideration for anyone entering a float or parade in a carnival. In particular, owners of the vehicles used must check that the lorry insurance extends to include use in a carnival or at least that the insurers have noted this is happening. The last thing anyone would want is for a child to run from the pavement and be hurt and then to find that the lorry insurance is invalid.

Clubs and societies are likely to have their own Public Liability insurance and they should check that their policy covers whilst on a float or in a parade. As for individuals and families entering, this is a bit trickier. If you accidentally injure someone in the crowd and they bring an action against you then you will be glad you took cover from an events specialist insurer. It is possible that the Personal Liability section of your household contents insurance may provide some cover, but I would urge caution as there are usually a number of exclusions and the cover is not really intended for this purpose - at the very least, you should check with the insurer first. It certainly won't cover anything involving a float or trailer.

I wouldn't wish to be a kill-joy or 'health and safety gone mad' by raising this! The chances of someone being hurt or property being damaged by an the actions of a carnival entrant is slim, but the consequences if it does happen would be traumatic and potentially expensive.

I'm not connected with these people and so can't recommend them as such, but it seems possible to get cover online here: graham-sykes.co.uk/event. At least it would give an idea of cost. We all want a well-supported carnival - if the insurance quote is good value then go for it!

Please don't get too deep with regards insurance jargon no one says you have to have a lorry trailers are fine there is a company in christchurch Dorset who cover a float for the weekend Paul Johnson will have name and lorry will have public liability of its a company so please don't be put off by too heavy jargon

Hi

We are in the process of discussing whether we might be able to help people fund the necessary insurance. If you go to our website there is a section on how to enter the carnival. I will update that shortly with details of the insurance required and how we could help with the costs!

Hope that helps!

Karen

Well done for that response Karen so for anyone thinking of putting a float in get your thinking caps on and No excuses join in and enjoy yourselves and know the enjoyment you give to the crowds and keep this great tradition going and remember local charities benefit

M, you are quite right that people shouldn't get hung up on insurance, it is easily sorted and the little bit of admin is vastly outweighed by the fun of entering a float. Your point about the owners of the lorry having 'public liability' insurance is not necessarily right though. The lorry owners should tell their vehicle insurers that they are using it in a carnival - some insurers will be fine with this but others need to note it. It doesn't usually cost any extra.

You do not need a lorry to enter the carnival

you can enter as a push and pull

use a wheel barrow sack truck anything with wheels

find some old pram wheels at the tip formation driving mobility scooters who knows what liphook residents imagination will run too

walk ride a decorated bike
