Parking on headley road
- Thomas (5th Dec 2016 - 17:00:31)

Please do NOT park on Headley road. It is dangerous and annoying it also doesn't help the traffic problems.

Re: Parking on headley road
- David (5th Dec 2016 - 18:55:46)

Please DO park on the road. Anything that slows the muppets who drive down there like it's a national speed limit rather than the posted 30mph is a good thing. Only tonight I nearly had a 7.5ton lorry nearly run up the back of me as he was going to fast when I slowed to pull onto the driveway. And before you ask, yes I was indicating well in advance before going anywhere near the brake pedal!
Sorry Thomas I fail to see how parking on the road is dangerous, it is the way people go round the cars that is the real issue.

I would support David's viewpoint, considering the muppet minority of drivers in Liphook (which of course is no one who reads this forum!), it is a good thing to slow the errant drivers down.

And on a related note, to the lady who was more interested in smoking her cigarette, rather than paying attention to what other cars were doing around her down The Avenue, pay attention! Traffic will flow better if you pay attention to the road, rather than your cigarette, and leave space for cars to be able to pass each other, rather than blocking the road, and then having to back up to let the queue of traffic past as they had no where else to go except forward...

Totally agree with you David.

I live on the Headley Road. Totally agree with you David. Parking on the Headley Road helps slow the traffic. Especially at peak times when school children are walking to and from school. Also to say it'll help with the traffic problems, what traffic problems? Oh having to wait a few minutes to pass through the square. We're very lucky not to have any real traffic to worry about in Liphook. Just muppet drivers on their mobiles or speeding. People need to slow down and drive properly through the village.

Can't believe I'm getting sucked in ! But here goes ...

It's a question of balance ! If cars were parked from the co-op to the roundabout, nose to bumper, that would not be good for obvious reasons !

So here is my personal benchmark / measure ...

If I have to wait / be patient at the parked cars - and then get to roundabout and there is still a queue - life is good !

Said differently, I'd get really irritated if I got to the roundabout and was first there - having waited to get past parked cars.

So a delay has never happened in the past 2 years. So while I might get marginaly irritated, I shouldn't ! And I have now got a different perspective.

Hope that make sense ?

Cheers, a rather mature and relaxed (even though he says it himself), Finchie

By adding my two penny worth here Thomas, there are some houses along the Headley road who do not have garages or front drives upon which they can park, so where do you suggest the householder might park their car?

Fighting fire with fire. There are solutions that won't cause major problems, alas selfish / antisocial human nature gets in the way.
A number of issues were raised.
-Cars parked inconveniently must park in a more considerable manner, walk further from a proper car park or do more manoeuvring if necessary.
-If properties don't offer sensible parking - don't move there, don't keep a car or don't expect convenient parking. I wouldn't bring my horse to our retirement flat!
-Speeding? Set off earlier, don't drive or consider true self-harm, don't endanger others.

I have no issue with cars parking along Headley Road, It does slow traffic and, in my view they parks considerately to other road users. My gripe is with the drivers who decide that they have waited too long and just drive round them when they don't have right of way or space.

I have also noticed an increasing trend of vans (an oven cleaning one with a name like a film staring John travoltor springs to mind recently) parking up in the pavement preventing wheelchair users and those with prams walking on the pavement. Totally selfish and inconsiderate - where do they expect pedestrians to go? I'm after someone to clean my oven - it won't be them!

- susan (8th Dec 2016 - 16:26:56)

I do not condone speed and feel very strongly that speed limits should be obeyed. However I do take issue with the posters who state that the parked cars slow the traffic down. Pinch points slow the traffic down, a long unbroken line of cars parked in the road cause the traffic to stop and create a back up.
The problem with cars that are parked on the road forming a long line (this also happens on the Portsmouth Road) is that it makes it very difficult and in some cases dangerous for cars to pull out and overtake safely. The obstruction just stretches too far impairing visibility. That is why when there are road works of any length traffic lights are installed.

A much better way of slowing the traffic down would be to have traffic calming installed as they have done on the approach to Grayshott which certainly slows the traffic down when entering the village.

To those people who live in the houses on Headley Road with no off road parking, they knew this when they bought the property. Even the houses on Headley Road who do have off road parking do not appear to always use it..

Susan, Those owners also knew there were no parking restrictions on this part of the road. They are doing nothing wrong!

Re: Parking on headley road
- Natalie (8th Dec 2016 - 18:25:03)

Susan, firstly, Ian is right, people living on the Headley Road brought their properties knowing there weren't any parking restrictions. Secondly, the parked cars do not cause traffic. The square and the vehicles travelling through Liphook cause the traffic. Then thirdly, anyone with a valid driving licence, should be able to maneuver passed a few legally parked cars.

Re: Parking on headley road
- Susan (9th Dec 2016 - 14:58:12)

Natalie, of course a driver should be able to pass cars parked in the road. My point which you seem to have completely missed, is the difficulty in passing safely a LONG UNBROKEN LINE OF CARS. That is why there are traffic lights at road works which block the road where the length is deemed to be unsafe for cars to pull out and pass. You are right cars parked in the road do not cause traffic, that is obvious, but they do cause traffic jams.

It's getting to the point where Liphook would benefit from a one-way system, I think. But there are not currently enough roads in the right places to make that possible, unfortunately.

Worse things happening in the world than a few parked cars, get over yourselves!

Well said Mandy!!!
