Bramshott Church parking
- liz (5th Dec 2016 - 16:25:35)

As this continues to be an issue, perhaps it would make sense for the church to purchase the land for sale at the end of Church Road for use as a car park?

I guess you have only lived there a short time compared to some of us, why don't you move problem solved!!!

hi Liz, I know that overall the Church of England are big landowners but the land is for sale at building land prices, from memory, 100k or thereabouts, a very expensive carpark!

Nope, not experienced it. But I suppose I only go past twice a day and four times a day at weekends, so might be missing the issue. And I've only got 14 years of experience of doing this, so not a long termer.

If you are referring to the odd occasion that there is funeral or parked cars for a service on Sunday, when you might have to slow down and be aware of oncoming traffic, suggest you move to Rome or Paris where it is way more exciting.

Very Best, Finchie

Ouch! Really surprised to get such nasty "Why don't you move" and sarcastic responses to this (Barbara excluded). Glad I'm not a newby or I would wonder where I had moved to - any newcomers be assured this is not typical of Bramshott, at least not the Bramshott I know.

I first came to Bramshott in 1964 and grew up there (this no doubt makes me either a) too old to comment or b) still not a true local, depending on your perspective!) I have not lived in Bramshott all my life, (although generally not too far away) but there has always been a family home there and since I moved back to Bramshott a few years ago the parking situation at the church has got steadily worse.

I suspect Finchie (who normally has an excellent sense of humour, at least on this website) lives far enough away from the church as not to really be affected as he just refers to driving past. He might feel differently if he arrived home and was not able to get into his drive or worse, as has happened to us, not be able to get out of his drive for a couple of hours due to inconsiderate parking.

We, and neighbours, have allowed people to park in our driveways on occasion which is OK if you are there when they arrive and can get your own car out first. No, this doesn't happen all the time but is happening with increasing frequency and people get quite distressed if they are late for a wedding/funeral because there is nowhere to park. My suggestion was a genuine one and the only sensible response has come from Barbara as she says it is expensive, but any land around here is expensive. The Church has extensive investments and it is an opportunity to solve an issue which can only get worse as Liphook expands.

Ah ! more information and context !!! Helpful. Didn't know that was the situation, hence my flippant response.
Liz, it would do my head in if my drive was blocked ! And I'd get VERY irritated ! A friend of mine would probably let the tyres down, and another friend would probably glue a note to the windscreen with superglue. I won't tell you what my Irish friend would do.
Why would someone block a drive ! No idea how you would go about stopping that, other than a sign.
Finchie

At least Finchie has his sense of humour back! Why would someone block someone else's drive? I think because they eventually get so desperate they just don't care. I pointed out to someone that they were blocking my neighbours drive the other day the response was "I didn't see it". The entrance is not small or hidden. It all seems very funny until you are blocked in when you really need to go out. I'm not sure what is so awful about the suggestion of a car park.

Please could someone update me on the parking situation around St Mary’s, Bramshott?

Is it possible for people to park easily for a wedding service?

Many thanks in advance.

Rachel - Yes and no. If you arrive in good time no problem, otherwise parking is limited, its a country lane and if its a big wedding and you are not early you will not be able to park considerately nearby

Re: Bramshott Church parking
- JH (25th May 2021 - 11:09:09)

Rachel - as you will have gathered from this thread, there is no car park at St Mary's church. People who use the church generally park in Church Road. Some park in Church Lane or round the Triangle which makes manoeuvring large vehicles very difficult. Most are careful and considerate, but quite a few are not.

For large events, the Church Centre might help by contacting a local landowner who MAY agree to cut the grass in a nearby field and allow it for parking, in exchange for a contribution to church funds.

Many years ago the church investigated buying one of the properties near the church with a view to turning it into a church centre and car park. It was all too costly.

The lanes around Bramshott are narrow and are used as a rat-run to avoid Liphook square. Satnavs send 44tonne artics into the village, through which there is no speed limit, weight limit, width limit or other restriction. It's a lovely place but nowhere is perfect!

Liz I sympathize I used to live near a church with a narrow road, On a Sunday or Saturday ( made worse by having to park on the road old house no drives ) unless you parked early could not get anywhere near my house - sadly Christian goodwill to others, does not seem to expand outside of the walls of the church. As for Weddings I would have thought current restrictions would have improved the situation - but obviously not!

As far as I am aware there have been no weddings in Bramshott church since the first lockdown started in spring 2020.
Worshippers on Sundays (perhaps 7 or 8 cars) park along he churchyard wall in Church Rd or Church Lane.
Not sure about funerals.

- er (26th May 2021 - 13:07:30)

k, put aside your stereotypes, Christians do not wander through life saying 'after you', they are actually real people, not just stories you read about in the Bible, anyway most people turning up to church weddings or funerals are not even practicing Christians, if Christian at all. For weddings or funerals think more your average weekend shopper, except in Bramshott there are no yellow lines and God is not responsible for the parking, plus the church wins hands down the 'we've been here longest' bragging rights!

Parking across a driveway so as to block it is actually the police or councils job to solve, whether a church or anywhere else!

Re: Bramshott Church parking
- liz (27th May 2021 - 08:11:26)

This is a very old thread that needs an update. I was told by one chap who was blocking our drive that churchgoers were being told by church representatives to park in Limes Close. Whether this was true or not I cannot say but we contacted the church wardens, pointed out the problem and since then any parking in the Close at least has been very considerate and this is much appreciated. (I refer to pre-pandemic times of course before some wit points out that it could have been a bit quiet recently anyway!)

Re: Bramshott Church parking
- AF (28th May 2021 - 16:59:16)

Liz

This is a bit like the old commuters parking in newtown road. As long as the people attending the church are not doing anything illegal theres nothing you can do about it, and you have to accept if you live near a church with no car parking that on certain days there will people parking all over the place.

Re: Bramshott Church parking
- Penny Williamson (28th May 2021 - 21:11:51)

AF There is a world of difference between parking on a roadside legally and parking so that you are blocking someone's drive which is what Liz said a gentleman was doing. She then went onto say that after speaking to a Church Warden the parking is now much more considerate. She was not complaining about parking per se just inconsiderate and illegal parking. Drivers simply cannot park across someone's drive.
