- Wendy (19th Aug 2016 - 13:30:24)

Just done my shopping in sainsburys, was sad to read that Albert, he was a check out operator, passed away this morning. RIP Albert.

Albert was a real gent, would always use his point if possible, polite & send shopping at a sensible speed. An inspiration to people in how to work. Bless him, sad loss.

Loved his rugby union...a true gent...

I am also very sorry to hear this. He seemed like a well educated man perhaps a bit down on his luck in his older years and I always enjoyed chatting with him.

I hope someone at Sainsburys will be able to pass all these messages of appreciation on to his family.

I did my shopping at Sainsbury's a couple of days ago and that was the last time I saw Albert. Although he was not in a great shape he was always made me feel comfortable by smiling and me and asking: "How are you".
I am sure Albert will be missed by many...
RIP Albert :(

So sorry to read this post, Albert was a gentleman, always had the time to speak to customers and ask about them, one of the old school. Please pass my thanks onto his family for having such a gentleman in their mist. RIP Albert x

I would like to add my condolences to his family and to agree with so many of the other comments.

He was a lovely gentleman and will be sadly missed by many of us who were simply familiar with his friendly face in Sainsburys. Such sad news.

Even when he was obviously not feeling in the best of health he always managed a smile and a little chat. He will be sadly missed. RIP Albert

Sainsury's have set up a little memorial for Albert on checkout No 17 which was where he very often worked.
It is a sad loss for us all, he was a real gentleman and always had a chat even when he was obviously not too good. Hope that his family will be looked after as his wife was not well.
RIP

Such a shame to hear of Alberts passing, he was a lovely kind man, such a lovely fitting tribute by the staff at Sainsburys. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Just read this, I looked for Albert both on Saturday and Sunday when I visited the store. When Albert had to have time off for illness, I always used to ask how he was and when he would be back. Having been a businessman in the past and falling into hard times, he has been a lovely addition to the Sainsbury's check out for at least ten years.
So very sad. A lovely guy.

So sad, he was such a lovely man. Somehow you could tell he was used to the finer things in life.

I also used to seek his till out, it was slower and seemed to make the process a touch more civilised.

He will be sadly missed.
x

Oh Albert you remembered my birthday and I yours. But you didn't make yours. Such a lovely English gent always used your checkout. You will be missed by so many people. May you forever rest in peace one in a million xx

Thank you to all of you for your kind comments.

I am Albert's daughter and this site has only just been pointed out to my mum and me and we really appreciate your caring comments.

Sainsbury's was such an important part of my dad's life and we are sure his customers and colleagues helped keep him going. While he worked there, we have been surprised by some of his customers who have invited him to their homes and others even written poetry about him!

The Shrine (as we have been calling it) at his till after he died was such a nice gesture and has given us much comfort as have the beautiful cards and messages that were left. We have been told that they are going to put a plaque on his till saying "Albert's till" which amazed and delighted us in equal measure! I always think of modern supermarkets as so impersonal compared to old-fashioned shopping but clearly Sainsburys in Liphook is an exception and he was very lucky to have worked there.

We are so touched by the support the community is showing for Albert's passing, thank you.

- Kris (28th Aug 2016 - 09:13:00)

So sad to hear that Albert has passed away, like other shoppers I would always make a beeline for his till when he was on duty.

He has touched us all in some way and it is lovely to read that Sainsbury's plan to place a plaque on his till.

RIP Albert and thank you.
