Free water soldier
- Dave (21st Jul 2016 - 09:17:06)

Hi

Has any one out there got a pond that would like some mature water soldier. I have lots at the moment free to a good home! I phoned the garden centre but they are not allowed to take it even for free.
Please ring 07770224866

Dave

The problem here is the risk of cross contamination between ponds, it would not be a good idea if the receiving pond had any living fish / frogs in it.

alan my pond is very healthy I would not be offering the plants if not, that's why I have so much of it! It is good for the fish and clearing the water in the pond.

Water Soldiers themselves can become an invasive weed in the pond, and in some cases can escape to the wild causing damage there like other invasive aquatic plants.
Aquatic ecosystems are complex, it is not possible to say that a pond is 'clean' just by looking at it. Many pests and diseases are microscopic or otherwise hidden from sight.

Tell you what, dont worry i will dump it all in the composter, all i was trying to do was help someone with their ponds, but as usual the so called self styled experts know better, incidentally, i consulted an aquatic shop before i offered it around and they saw no problem with it! Still what do they know! Offer withdrawn!

But Dave in your first post you said the garden centre refused it. Did you ask why ? We were just explaining to the readers why that was likely to be the case.

well, that wasnt the reason that they couldnt take it actually. They suggested offering it around to pond owners. Doesn't matter now, its all gone for compost, i expect now there will be some ' expert' that says you cant do that either.!

Compost it? Oh no you can't do that.

Generous offer, no doubt.
Any doubt with the friendly advise given on here? Ask the RHS or The Environment Agency. Or perhaps someone knows of more knowledgeable sources?
