Threatening individual knocking at doors
- pete (20th Jul 2016 - 13:05:04)

Be aware, I just had (12:20pm) a young lad with a large backpack on call at my house and offer to sell "stuff"...

After informing him that I was not interested he became abusive and threatened to return later and cut my throat and burn down my house.

I've informed the police.

He knocked at our door as well but was very polite and understanding when I said we didn't want to buy anything. He said he was recently released from a young offenders institute and had enrolled on a sales program, and I felt bad that I wasn't buying anything as it must be hard going door to door trying to sell things.

I'm not sure I would fall for anything such a boy would say - but hello?

Recently out from Young Offenders and already back to the old ways? Marvelously functional system!

And some feel bad about not buying "stuff" from him...

This makes interesting reading. We had one at our door and later on my husband saw him getting into a minibus with some others so there's a few around not just one.

Interesting indeed... lesson to learn:

*TURN THEM AWAY*

REMEMBER if cold callers don’t get any sales in your area, they are less likely to return.

Firstly - In no way am I condoning what was allegedly said by the sales person, no excuses, absolutely outrageous.

However, Pete, were you rude, had a 'tone' or were in any way unpleasant or obnoxious in the way you told him you were not interested??

Even if you were that would not justify what was alleged to have been said but it may be a factor.

I had this young man at my door this morning, he was fine when I said I had no cash, and was quite polite. I should imagine by lunch time with the heat and no one buying though he might be feeling less than friendly.
I should imagine it is a thankless task.

He told me he was part of a probation scheme for him to get back into work. There is no such scheme run by the probation service. It is a con to get sympathy and sell overpriced goods.

Also if they think you are a soft target they will very likely give your address to others. Do not buy from them! He offered a card as proof very similar to the one mentioned in the link Debbie gave above.

Debbie's link to the Nottingham Knockers is fascinating. Particularly the bit about how they 'read' the notes!

I believe this is a scam. I feel for the youngsters who are led to believe they will earn a good living by selling door to door, probably like pyramid selling. If your desperate for money you would try anything. They target the vulnerable and promise them unrealistic earnings. It's the people at the top of these so called companies that we should be reporting and investigating and not the sellers. There are companies who operate In a similar way collecting door to door for charities, they prey on students especially in the cities, which I can say I have experienced first hand. Again if your desperate for money...... , there selling techniques are just the same except they employ educated students giving the public a better impression of the company, majority of the money doesn't actually go to the charities but lines the pockets of the pyramid companies and the fat cat ceo's. If you want to donate to a charity do it direct and not to some doggy door to door salesperson.

The young chap (17-18 yo) knocked at my door. He was mild mannered and polite. He was clearly troubled (with an overpowering smell of alcohol from 5 feet away) but, regardless of the story, which I didn't believe, I respected the fact that he wasn't begging, or stealing, and was trying to sell something in return for money. (I'm as unforgiving as anybody, but what's a poor kid with zero prospects to do?)

Thanks for the warning. Will stash a fiver in some festering socks for him to sniff and tell.
