Whats it like living in Liphook
- Becky from Bromley (21st Jun 2016 - 13:32:53)

We are family of five with 3 children ranging from 5 to 10.

Bromley feels very much more like a london town and we want to get away from the overcrowding and sense of rushing around.

What's like in Liphook? My husband works in the city - are the trains ok
Schools, schools school! Bohunt looks fabulous? Any feedback good or bad?

Local clubs, local shops, bigger town centres for larger shops?

Do the teenageers get bored (I keep hearing this if you move the country teenagers get metaphorically lost)

All view good and otherwise - looking for some honest opinions please
thanks in advance

Hi Becky

I've lived in Liphook for 10 years, whilst I don't have children, so am not in a position to comment, I do commute to London on the train.

As a general rule, South West Trains run a good service, there are enough trains to take you to and from Waterloo to service London working hours. The trains are clean, and generally warm in the winter, cool in the summer. Of course, they do occasionally have faults, but these really are the exception.

Additionally, most of the commuters who travel from Liphook are friendly, so it shouldn't take long to find some train friends.

I would thoroughly recommend a move to Liphook.

I would agree with what Paul has said plus we have beautiful countryside and easy access to London and the coast. However with the number of new houses proposed 300+ (I have lost count!) and 3000+ in nearby Bordon, traffic and parking is a real issue. It can only get worse, particularly as Bordon does not have its own train station.

- David (21st Jun 2016 - 16:00:29)

liz

I'm from Bromley originally and have to travel up a few times a year to visit friends and family. If you want to know what traffic is like, try spending a day in Bromley. Any day.

Even when the new homes are built I promise you, it won't be remotely as bad as Bromley is - or any other London Borough in fairness. We can generally get in our car and travel 60 miles in an hour from here at any time of the day. In Bromley, in the rush hour, you're looking at more like 6 miles in an hour.

And in answer to the original question - yes, Liphook is a much nicer place to live than Bromley IMHO.

Re: Whats it like living in Liphook
- liz (21st Jun 2016 - 16:59:55)

David.

I know Bromley quite well, I have family there. The poster asked for an honest opinion of Liphook and I have given what I believe to be an honest reply. Traffic and parking in Liphook is bad and more importantly has worsened dramatically in the last few years due to the impact of new housing. The building of the eco town in Bordon will have a significant impact. Please see the many posts on traffic/parking on this website!

Crap mobile signal, patchy broadband speed, not enough buses, speeding drivers, too many Estate Agents, plenty to do if you're over 60, dog Sh!t everywhere, no parking at the Station, plenty of parking on double yellows, a closed Skatepark, 1 expensive supermarket, but a FANTASTIC parish council. (Lol).

Welcome to Liphook !

6 miles an hour around Bromley is bad till you realise I was lucky to get a mile around Clapham Common on a morning back in the late 90s.

We thought of Bromley as deepest countryside, you'd need to be on a day trip out to go there.

Like a swollen diseased limb, London just keeps spreading out, Liphook is becoming the new London suburbia. Our kids will be just as bored here. But it's still good for young families and the retired.

- Dave McGrath (21st Jun 2016 - 22:14:50)

liphook is becoming a London suburb? Don't talk such utter c---p, we maybe getting a little bigger, but don't tar our village with the same brush as Milton Keynes! We are 50odd miles from that hell hole and I am glad we are! Would be yuppies are trying to get the best of both worlds, just because we have a mainline railway! Liphook is still JUST a village, accept as we are don't try to change us or go elsewhere. From a very long time liphook resident.

H
Suggest you visit one of the estate agents if your that unhappy!?
Not sure what your really getting upset about, liphook is a friendly, decent place to live.
Excellent state and private schools, good transport links, leisure centers near by, great golf courses, decent pubs and beautiful country side to enjoy.

Milton Keynes is fifty odd miles from London. Liphook is slightly less. Bordon is to be a 'new town'. Perhaps we should keep an even closer eye on those planners!

Bohunt catchment extends beyond Liphook. There are children attending from Godalming up to Petersfield.

- Becky from Bromely (22nd Jun 2016 - 11:48:44)

Thank you for your replies
We are going to visit again at the weekend for further investigation.

Bohunt school looks great and will try and arrange a visit before the end of the term.

Any other information on where you shop? What town do you go to that's the most accessible?

Thanks again - this is all really very helpful
Becky

- Helen (22nd Jun 2016 - 15:09:00)

Hi Becky,
I moved to Liphook four years ago from SW London, I am very happy, I really like the people, great sense of community. The only thing I don't like is the speeding through the village and the lack of investment in infrastructure, roads etc v poor quality.

We are also currently living through a period of change while Bordon is developed, we can't know how that will impact us, combined with the impact of the last few hundred odd homes they can squeeze into Liphook.

Shopping is v different, I tend to go to Petersfield on Sat, I like the market and combo of Waitrose / Lidl etc. You can get everything you need within 30 min drive if you go as far as Portsmouth or Guildford.

I echo Debbie's comments on the train, totally doable.

Hope that helps.

Excellent travel facilities london 1 hour on the train portsmouth 30 mins
Heathrow or gatwick an hour if roads clear
Guildford 20 mins car journey
Local sainsburys petetsfield has lidl waitrose tesco ms food
Bordon tesco lidl
South cost 30 mins via car or train
Good golf courses health spa if thats your thing
All in all a decent place to live

- Russ (22nd Jun 2016 - 21:46:47)

Not the best place for teenagers if they are used to the pace of London. Nothing much in the village and you will have to travel to get to the nearest town. Not a whole lot going on in the nearest towns either. Even kids that have grown up here say it was a bit boring.

There are not many local clubs. Scouts and Guides are well supported.

Not many local shops to speak of.

A very different pace of life. If that's your thing then you'll like it. If you like the buzz of London vibrance it won't suit you at all.

Re: Whats it like living in Liphook
- Jo (25th Jun 2016 - 09:47:19)

We have lived here for 10 years and have a 16 and 17 year old. There are a few primary/junior schools in the area which are really good, mine both went to Bohunt, one has just left - they are currently creating a six form. I would say some years ago the school was excellent but the last two years they have messed around with the stem subjects - changed exam boards for students in year 10 for example - mainly knee jerk reactions to poor science results the year before, I have nothing to compare against however. I don't think it's too bad here for teenagers, they have access to Guildford/Portsmouth easily enough by train for shopping/cinema/bowling/whatever they like doing... There is a local sainsburys, tesco and lidl 10 mins away and waitrose 15 mins away in Petersfield. Lots of house building going on, lots of easy access to countryside, generally nice people. You could do a lot worse :). Enjoy your weekend visit...

I live in Bordon but work in Liphook and my daughter is in her last year at Liphook Junior school. My husband has lived in Liphook most his life and we spend alot of time in Liphook.

I come from a busy city and found sense of community in Liphook amazing. Like any town/village you will encounter good and bad.

If you submerse yourself in village life you will enjoy the benefits of a large village. With regular events such as the Lidba charity bike ride and Liphook carnival.

For bigger shopping requirements I go to Basingstoke or Portsmouth all within a hour.

I certainly rate the infant and junior school highly but have reservations over Bohunt school as it was in my opinion not the right school for my daughter but other thrive there. Highly recommend visiting this school on a normal working day instead of a open day.
If you are use to London style traffic Liphook in peak times will feel be a breeze.
Highly recommend the brownie and scout groups in the area. Bordon also have army and navy cadets.
My only complaint would be that no local leisure centre within walking distance.

Trudy x

- Eml (23rd Jul 2016 - 13:27:24)

Hello Becky,
I have been reading through this thread and felt as if I could add some more info for you!
Quite a few people have said that the traffic and parking on Liphook is awful. Let me just say that they are over exaggerating- yes, during morning and evening peak, the traffic is pretty ridiculous - but i think that has to be expected in a small village that has a rather large school in the middle of it, and during the rest of the day it is never a problem. As for parking, there are 4 free car parks in the village that I can think of off of the top of my head, and I don't think that there is anywhere you have to pay to park!

As you mentioned, school wise there is Bohunt which is a very good state school, there is also Liphook Juniors and Infants too. There is Mill Chase which is the secondary school in Bordon, and Woolmer Hill in Haslemere. There are also plefty of private schools around the area too.

Facilities in Liphook - there is a large Sainsburys in the centre of the village, and also a Co-op here too which is always handy for a Sunday evening when you've forgotten to get into sainsburys before it shuts. Sainsburys has a petrol station, not 24hr, however on the A3 there is 24hr services on both northbound and southbound that are about a 2 minute drive out of the village.

We have 2 doctors surgeries, 3 dentists that I can think of, a fire station and a police station, so plenty of facilities in that respect.

Eating/drinking wise, there are a handful of pubs both in and on the outskirts of Liphook - the Anchor, the Green Dragon, the Links, the Deers Hut, and there is Liphook Social Club which you can pay a small membership fee for. All of these are good in their own different ways but I think that you will find they are all very welcoming.

There are two tea shops in the village centre. And there is Shanklys down station Road which does an amazing fry up!

At the Millennium Hall there is a Guide Hall and Scout Hall. They use the main hall for lots of different things, including cinema viewings every so often as far as I'm aware.

Bohunt has gym facilities, also there is Old Thorns just up the road which is a spa and hotel but has a gym which you can buy a membership for, also has a sports bar and a Costa up there too. They sometimes put on different events that are always a lot of fun.

Nearest bigger towns are Haslemere - 5 minutes by train, Petersfield- 15 minutes by train, and Guildford -30 minutes by train. Haslemere has a few more shops; Petersfield probably has a few more than that, and Guildford has a shopping centre which is very good.
Both Haslemere and Petersfield have leisure centres- the Herons and the Taro respectively, and Petersfield also has a lido.
Guildford has a leisure centre called the Spectrum with swimming facilities, ice skating and bowling.

There are plenty of places around Liphook for walks- Radford park is beautiful has a little green and a river and woodland walk. Iron hill is just on the way out of Liphook but lovely for a walk through the woods so if you have a dog or you just like walking or cycling then you're sorted!
Just up the road is a place called Hollycombe steam, which is a fairground that's great for kids too.

I will stop on my essay now, but all in all ,I think that Liphook is a great place to live, as contrary to what other people have said I think it's a great place to live for all ages. I've lived here all my life and am now 20, I still love living here and have always found that there is plenty to do (and strongly believe that people who say there is nothing to do simply have not actually been and looked!)

Hope this helps you or anyone else who is thinking of moving here!

I would personally stay in Bromley or move to Eltham, Christlehurst.

Today i was followed around Sainsburys by a security guard that looked 20, then being watched by a manager that looked like she was wearing a cheap primark shirt and not like a manager should do.. the lady serving on the till was great, there are a lo of nice people working there and a lot of nice young people in the village that are not criminals. There are also a nice selection of elderly care homes which help with the more mature people of the village.
