Please keep your dog on it's lead on busy roads
- Ann Thorneycroft (20th May 2016 - 09:40:27)
Would the irresponsible lady walking her black Labrador without a lead on the London Road at 7.25am this morning - I had to do an emergency stop to avoid running it over when it ran across the road in front of me - kindly use a lead - next time it might be a lorry or a bus that it runs in front of and the outcome would probably be disasterous.

Make up what you don't know!!
I am the lady you saw persuing the black lab which ran in front of vehicles on London road early this morning and he is NOT my dog. I was returning with my partner and our dog from our walk when we saw the loose dog. Unlike you (who presumably decided to keep on going!!) I went to the assistance of the dog who was terrified I managed to coax him to me and then take him to my house where upon I called the number on his collar. His owners were on holiday and he was in the care of a dog sitter. He had run from Bramshott common.
He was a scared dog in danger and I had to help, please do not make assumptions.
Ps, thank you to the lady on Childerstone Close who kindly tried to support me .......and sorry to any residents I woke up!! :)

Ann. How about an apology to Claire?
Don't you think you owe her one?

In Ann's defence at least she used for own name for her rant and didn't hide behind anonymity!! However, an apology would be nice and maybe a lesson leant, ie: don't jump to conclusions and give people the benefit of the doubt!!

How kind of you Claire, to step in to help the frightened dog. I bet the owners and dog minder were relieved!!
I am amazed no one else stopped to help you , surely as a driver Ann, if you saw a dog in the road would you not assume a lead or collar had snapped or slipped and the owner would need help?
all is well that ends well, glad there are kind hearted souls out there.

In Ann's defence, whilst clearly it looks like an apology is needed to Claire who was doing a good turn, I can see how the mistake arose. It must have looked to Ann just like she said, an out of control dog running into the road being chased by it's owner. Not everyone is a doggy lover and some of us may be uncomfortable around dogs for whatever reason, you can't just demand that we pull over and start chasing around an out of control dog (which Claire admits it was) especially when you read about some of the out of control dog and their owner horror stories out there.
Either way, for this dog to have been running into the road and causing a danger, something went wrong somewhere, hence dogs should be kept on leads. And don't get me started on some of the doggy walkers I see walking half a dozen various dogs that clearly don't belong to them and they clearly can't control properly, that's for another day!

Firstly,I do apologise to the lady who was apparently not the owner of the black Labrador - but - only a couple of weeks ago the same thing happened to me when I was driving through Hindhead early one Sunday morning on my way to the Punch Bowl. A man was walking along the road with a black Spaniel off its lead. The Spaniel suddenly decided to run into the middle of the road in front of me. Fortunately at 7.30am on a Sunday morning there was not much traffic around.
When the black Labrador ran in front of my car, of course I pulled over and stopped and watched to see if a lady my side of the road needed assistance, but from what I could see she seemed to be in control. I would mention I had my own dog in the back of my car as I was going off to walk him.
I did not assume it was a case of a broken lead or collar - driving back through the centre of Liphook after walking my dog in the morning I have on several occasions been concerned to see dogs walking off their leads at the height of the rush hour.
