Passfield Broadband Speeds
- Julian (17th May 2016 - 11:42:16)

Hi,

Anyone having issues with their Broadband in Passfield over the past few days? Apparently there are no known issues at present but I think this photo might suggest otherwise ...

I hope we can get Superfast soon

Julian.

Yes, it's been very very slow for the last few days. More so than normal!

Yes, my telephone line and broadband went down last week and I was without both for three days. The fault was finally sorted last Thursday afternoon. Prior to that at certain times of the evening, the broadband wasn't working at all. I'm just a few yards from the exchange!

Could the local business's get together and put some pressure on HCC /BT/EHDC to provide high speed lines. We have a local exchange so why the delay?

Hi Chris,

We have been trying for about 3-years, since the Hampshire Super-fast Broadband program was in its infancy.

We researched Grants for which both HCC and EHDC had none. We looked at the Governments "Connected Cities" grant scheme but this was only available in areas that already had fast broadband. Hey ho.

We contacted and met with the head Economic Development in HCC and EHDC, both who did not know that Passfield had two business parks and approximately 70 businesses employing several hundred people.

We looked at bringing our own super-fast fiber connection into Passfield with speeds of up to 1 Gigabit both up and down. Much faster than BT Infinity.

We tested connecting across the community using Wi-Fi which worked well but it does require line-of-sight connectivity. We are in a fairly level area and have a lot of trees!

There is a company in Winchester who already offer this setup within up to a 20-mile radius (www.gigabeam.co.uk) but they have a nice big hill to place the equipment on.

Basically Passfield could have its own super-fast connectivity, up to 10 times faster than BT Infinity.

Its not a cheap solution and it would require further research, investment and commitment from the local residents to make it work. I reluctantly mention figures but a ballpark monthly cost would be a minimum of £50 per month per household plus a one-off setup fee for the router. This is based upon 60 + signups.

Could be up and running in 3 months (subject to survey!) and the National Trust allowing us to send Wi-Fi signals over 'their land' without Wayleave :-) lol.

Julian.

And on top of the extremely poor download and upload speeds BT are going to increase their prices by 15% for the use of such a crap service. The last time I had to call BT to fix a broken line they said it would be 10 days! I went and cut the line from the fallen tree and climbed the pole and fixed it myself the same day. No BT means no router, which means no Vodafone Sure Signal which leaves me without landline, internet and mobile phone service, When you're trying to run a business it makes it challenging. I think it's a real liberty and changing provider means nothing as you have to use the same sub standard infrastructure! upload speed with BT is usually 350kbpm and download is usually 3mgbpm CRAP!!

The Passfield Exchange is on HCC Wave 2 and the target plan is for the upgrade to occur between July '16 and June '17 as shown on the HCC broadband website.

Once the upgrade has happened they then need to install one or more cabinets to deliver "Superfast broadband", those within 1 mile of a new cabinet will get 30mbps+.

shows the timing and link below the list of exchanges.
