Inconsiderate Parking
- Irritated by selfish parking (26th Nov 2015 - 13:18:23)

There seems to be an increased level of commuters using Canada Way as an alternative to the station car-park. With the new residents of the Maple Park development (quite rightly) parking outside their properties, the commuters are parking both dangerously and inconsiderately further into the development, particularly on the S bend.

Yesterday, a very inconsiderate and selfish soul parked their Sherman tank (Land Rover), right on the one of the corners. These corners aren't the safest from a visibility point, even without obstruction.

I wonder if these lovely people even take a moment to consider how their selfish actions impact on the residents.

They should be putting in double-yellows on the corner of Edmonton Way at least. I wish they'd hurry up and do so as it can be awkward trying to pull out onto Canada Way!

Welcome to the parking club This has been happening in Newtown Road for Years. They just park and dump and don't give a damn about where residents park when they come home!!

I do agree that any driver should park safely and courteously.

What we must remember is that any vehicle can freely park anywhere on a public highway where restrictions do not apply, as long as they do so safely.

It is not illegal to park in front of another users home and home owners do not have an automatic right to a parking place outside their property. It is a public highway and anyone can part there.

Whilst it is not illegal, it is inconsiderate and selfish to park dangerously! The same Landrover parked so close to the corner on Quebec Close a couple of weeks ago which gave zero visibility for anyone trying to drive out or cross the road.

We knew about the parking before we moved in and so expected it but we should not have to put up with drivers that ignore the highway code!!

While it is currently not illegal for non-residents to park on Newtown road, there are signs at either end saying 'access only'. These signs are not respected by commuters - many of whom use the road early in the morning/late at night - or those on the school run who use the road as a short cut. It is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident on Newtown Road.

I agree no one should park in such s way that danger can be caused however the station car park is virtually full by half seven in the morning due to the bottom of the car park being closed off for what reason is beyond me so what would you do if you couldn't park at the station and had no alternative ?

The police can be called for breaches of the Highway Code, and that includes parking. In the Highway code this is covered in the Stopping, Waiting and parking (rules 238 to 252).

If the cars are parking on a bend, or on a junction then they are in breach of a number of rules!

Rule 238: You MUST NOT wait or park on yellow lines. You MUST NOT wait or park, or stop to set down and pick up passengers, on school entrance markings.

Rule 239: You MUST NOT use off-street parking areas, or bays marked out with white lines on the road as parking places: You MUST NOT park facing against the traffic flow and must stop as close as you can to the side. You MUST NOT stop too close to a vehicle displaying a Blue Badge. You MUST switch off the engine, headlights and fog lights. You MUST apply the handbrake before leaving the vehicle. You MUST ensure you do not hit anyone when you open your door.

Rule 240: You MUST NOT stop or park on: the carriageway or the hard shoulder of a motorway except in an emergency. You MUST NOT stop or park on:a pedestrian crossing, including the area marked by the zig-zag lines,a clearway, a taxi bay, an Urban Clearway, roads marked with double white lines, even when a broken white line is on your side of the road, except to pick up or set down passengers, or to load or unload goods. You MUST NOT stop or park on a tram or cycle lane, a cycle track or red lines.

Rule 241: You MUST NOT park in parking spaces reserved for specific users, such as Blue Badge holders, residents or motorcycles, unless entitled to do so.

Rule 242:You MUST NOT leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road.

Rule 243: DO NOT stop or park near a school entrance or anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services. DO NOT stop or park at or near a bus or tram stop or taxi rank. DO NOT stop or park on the approach to a level crossing/tramway crossing. DO NOT stop or park opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space. DO NOT stop or park near the brow of a hill or hump bridge. DO NOT stop or park opposite a traffic island or (if this would cause an obstruction) DO NOT stop or park near another parked vehicle where you would force other traffic to enter a tram lane. DO NOT stop or park where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles. DO NOT stop or park in front of an entrance to a property. DO NOT stop or park on a bend. DO NOT stop or park where you would obstruct cyclists’ use of cycle facilities except when forced to do so by stationary traffic.

Rule 244: You MUST NOT park partially or wholly on the pavement which can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and people with prams or pushchairs.

Rule 248:You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space.

Rule 249: All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or a lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph (48 km/h).Unless they are:
at least 10 metres (32 feet) away from any junction, close to the kerb and facing in the direction of the traffic flow, in a recognised parking place or lay-by.
