Missing Freeview channel!
- Paul E (6th Oct 2015 - 11:22:18)

This week's Radio Times, page 41, informed readers that last evening we could go to channel 81 to watch an old British film. Anybody manage to find channel 81 by any chance? Or is it me?

Hi Paul,
I have looked on the Freeview website, apparently this new channel is only available to 70 percent of the population, I guess the very urban conurbations only. We may be in the 30 per cent which does not get this coverage.

Receiving this channel loud and clear in Liphook on freeview.
I suggest you do a channel retune.

Hi Boris, i guess you are on cable or sky TV? I have retuned my Sony with an ariel connection and no channel between 78 and 120. i did retune before I made the last posting.

Hi Stacey,
No not on Sky or cable, just the normal set up.
I think it depends on the quality of your television tuner because I have a smaller tv in bedroom and it will not recognise channel 81.
There is also another possibility and that is the fact that Liphook is served by a number of transmitters, so it could also depend on which one you are receiving the signal from.

It seems that the Midhurst transmitter (aerial pointing SE from Liphook) does not have channel 81, whereas Hannington (aerial pointing NW from Liphook) does.

Thanks editor it explains a lot as I have the mIdhurst transmitter. I guess that is why we lose out, maybe the channel will soon be available.

Have a look at talkingpicturestv.co.uk
It gives you all the details. You need a freeview hd tv because although channel 81 is not in hd, it is transmitted in the hd bundle.
It can also be viewed on freesat by going out of the freesat mode. The talkingpicturetv web site gives instructions if you need them.I have not tried this yet as freeview reception is good.
It is planned to have full freesat transmission around Christmas.
Hope this helps. Some good old movies.

Re the two transmitters. They are dirrectly opposite each other and can cause ghosting. You can tweek which transmitter to use by putting in a different postal code in your set up. Basingstoke for example instead of liphook postal codes.
Often if you do a manual retune you can decide which transmitter to use.
