River Wey - land ownership near Liphook/Haslemere
- Neil (4th Sep 2015 - 16:09:37)

Hi everyone

I'm hoping to catch some signal crayfish in the River Wey somewhere in the vicinity of Liphook; these are a nasty invasive species that destroy the native crayfish.

To get a licence from the Environment Agency I need to give them a specific location, which entails having permission from the landowner. Can anyone help me out with a map of who owns what land that the Wey flows through near our village?

Many thanks

Neil

Try contacting the River Way Trust as they are in contact with most of the landowners.

The River Wey is a tributary of the River Thames in south east England and one of two major tributaries in Surrey.

The River Wey Trust maybe able to point you in the right direction .

This website about the River Wey may have helpful information www.weyriver.co.uk/theriver/wildlife_5_fish

Either contact the River Wey Conservation Trust or Surrey Wildlife Trust who have been working with local landowners and carrying out volunteer surveys of the whole of the River Wey (starting from it's source).

We found some in the river at Radford Park. Don't know what the law is on catching them there though.

Thanks for the responses, I'll get in touch with the trust.

Re. Radford Park whereabouts did you get them and what did you use?

We found them just round from the new bridge. There's a deeper bit that's a bit away from the path. Hubby just picks them up.

Suggest you go to the government website:

gov.uk/guidance/permission-to-trap-crayfish-eels-elvers-salmon-and-sea-trout

You will need a licence.

Sarah - if you have caught signal crayfish you cannot put them back in the water. Keep them in fresh water for about 24 hours then cook them.

Hi Sarah

The kids and I took a walk through the park earlier but am not sure where the new bridge is. Can you be any more specific as it would make my 4 year olds day if we found one!

Thanks

In part answer to the original posting, Radford Park is owned by Bramshott and Liphook parish Council.

And to stress a previous posting - our native white clawed crayfish is now an endangered species. Their demise is mainly due to a fungus carried by the Signal crayfish (an invasive species).

Since it will be difficult for many people to distinguish between the two please remember that even if you ignore the requirement to have a licence to capture them NO crayfish should be taken off site and released into another water body.
