Refugee crisis in Europe
- Karina (4th Sep 2015 - 09:50:12)

Is there a local refugee support group or similar please?

Hi,

There is a group in Haslemere and a couple of Guildford groups organising on facebook. Please follow the links below.

www.facebook.com/haslemerehandinhand

Guildford donation drop off - Shaftesbury Hall, George Road, GU1 4NP

www.facebook.com/groups/GuildfordAction

They are collecting donated items for drop off in Calais.

If you wanted to help people arriving in the Mediterranean might be more effective to make a monetary donation to one of the charities working there.

Hope that is helpful.

Katie

The sad thing is we don't know who are the refugees or the people that want a few hand outs in the UK.
I would suggest tackling the problem at the source. Send in the military and get rid of IS once and for all.

Whatever the longer term solution I think the refugees' problems are more immediate. They need food, clothing and shelter.

The more you give out and the more you let in: the more will head off in this direction, smuggled in, inhumane conditions, urgent need, crisis... Is it not an obvious vicious circle? Do we really think we have seen the end of this? Millions more to come...
Tackle the crisis at source and discourage economic immigration should be the first priority if you genuinely want to minimise human suffering and help the few deserved ones.

Very true. But the problem is that solving the problem at source a) would take a year or two if not longer, b) would require military force to destroy Isis and other regimes of terror - and that in itself would in the short term produce more refugees and c) there is little appetite in the British public, and even less in other European countries, to commit our forces as 'boots on the ground', which is what would be required, and even less, to see our brave men and women being brought home in body bags in if we're lucky the dozens and more likely the hundreds

So for those of us in Western Europe it really is a case of heads we lose, tails they win.
