Getting a number plate allocated to an old car.
- Dawn Hoskins (1st Sep 2015 - 13:47:45)

Removing the private plate from the vehicle – easy-peasy – form is on-line.

This leaves the vehicle with no number plate assigned to it – how do you get a plate reassigned to the vehicle?

I have tried contacting the DVLA but there is a massive lot of Industrial Action taking place at Swansea and all the phones are cut off!

Someone may know the answer so I’ll put it ‘out there’ and maybe some clever person can tell me what to do.

Thanks in advance

Hi Dawn, if the car had previously had a 'normal' plate the DVLA automatically reallocate that same plate back to the car and send you a new V5 document. If the car has only ever had a private plate (ie it was first registered on it) then they allocate another correct age related plate and issue the V5.

When you get the form, V317, you can either transfer it directly to another car, or hold it on retention.
If you hold it on retention, then the fee you pay, also then allows for the plate to go onto the new vehicle - you just need the log book details.
Hope that helps

Just to clarify further.

The car has had the plate from new (has never had a non-cherished plate). The person who has given it to us wants to keep the plate but is an old family friend and trusts us not to be dishonest.

So, when the number plate is returned to him, it will leave the car numberless. This is what need to address.

Unfortunately, the change of owner form has already been sent off which has complicated matters - and the DVLA are on strike which complicates them even further.

As I previously said then, the DVLA will just issue the car with a new numberplate of the correct age and a new V5.

Dawn, it's one of those occasions when you do absolutely nothing.
When all the forms come back in the post your car will have been automatically assigned a new registration number, not always the original one but quite often it is.
You will be sent the relevant documents to enable you to purchase the new number plates to put on the car and you then inform your insurance company of the registration number change to ensure the car is correctly insured.
You might not get the new V5 registration document immediately but you must get the new plates fitted and advise your insurance company straight away.
Hope that helps.
