Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Bora (24th Aug 2015 - 17:53:03)

I'm very disappointed that someone has done this it was only left in Portsmouth rd layby from 11pm till 4am they broke all the locks made a hell of lot damage to the locks and took the generator and left they could of taken more things but these thiefs must be just after a generator.

cannot open my business due to this my apologies to my customers that I can't open will be back running soon , but if anyone saw anything suspicious and near the van between those times please contact me my number is 07920103443 many thanks

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Dawn Hoskins (25th Aug 2015 - 11:23:11)

I'm sorry for your loss, but maybe you should take it home with you at the end of the shift rather than leave it on the roadside?

It would be less unsightly for the village AND you would have the added security of being able to watch over it.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- liz (25th Aug 2015 - 12:06:53)

A bit harsh Dawn- I hardly think a van in a lay-by is unsightly!!

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Dawn Hoskins (25th Aug 2015 - 12:36:53)

It is far better to be in a place where the owners can keep an eye on it or have a CCTV camera pointed at it IMO and I although I appreciate the odd burger now and then, I do find the van unsightly (sorry if that upsets but that's my opinion).

I am sure the equipment is very expensive and I expect thieves are much more likely to 'try it on' when it is in a deserted layby. It presents an opportunity that would not exist if it was locked behind gates at the owners address.

I am truly sorry that they had their equipment stolen BTW

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Lips (25th Aug 2015 - 16:45:20)

Dawn: Harsh but true. Thank you.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Col (25th Aug 2015 - 17:53:10)

Hmm bit strange they were only interested in the generator. I am sorry to hear you were robbed. I do hope they find who did this, but I am afraid I agree with Dawn. It is an eye sore stuck there in the bus lay-by. It's also a shame that since the van has been parked there a lot of rubbish has begun to appear around this area of Portsmouth Road.

I was under the impression the guys who owned the van owned the kebab shop in the village opposite HSBC (or where it used to be) Did the shop get closed down then?

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- george (25th Aug 2015 - 18:17:44)

Wow!...cant believe these comments!

Sorry Bora, some Thieving idiot, has stole your equipment, but in response to Dawn,.....was your reaction the same, when Liphook United, had their goals set on fire a few years ago?
They were left behind the Clubhouse, and some low-life set fire to them. Left behind the Clubhouse, as there was is no storage available for them! and basically your attitude is,...well they left them there, its asking for trouble!

Sad, some people have react this way.
A burger Van unsightly?..

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- bgn (25th Aug 2015 - 20:57:56)

Not good that anyones business should be affected by other people, Dawn obviously has too much time on her hands as she seems to comment on everything on talkback, its a burger van that i'm sure lots of people use, sorry for those affected, but Dawn maybe you should find more to do !!!!!

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Richard (25th Aug 2015 - 22:04:50)

Dawn, if you dislike the burger van that much then complain to the relevant authority.

My opinion is that this theft has stopped someone earning a living. This is more of an issue than how he chooses to earn it

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- S (25th Aug 2015 - 23:51:43)

I can't believe there are that many people who spend enough time on this section of Portsmouth Rd to actively find the burger van an eye-sore.

Dawn for one doesn't even live in Liphook!

Even if the van were an eye-sore, that doesn't make the theft any less bad!

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Lips (26th Aug 2015 - 06:32:46)

Whether people need to make a living, like eating burgers or have too much free time or not - the facts remain: the van and generator were indeed unsightly, inconvenient and vulnerable to theft!

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Richard (26th Aug 2015 - 08:21:53)

"Unsightly" smacks of NIBMYism.

Presumably this chap offers a service that people wanted, else he would not be selling burgers from his location.

If no-one wanted his service he would move on

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- liz (26th Aug 2015 - 08:28:10)

Now we have 'inconvenient' to add to the problems the van was apparently causing for some. Inconvenient to whom?!!

I expect the theft is extremely inconvenient for the person whose livelihood the van is!

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- steve (26th Aug 2015 - 09:22:18)

Bora - sorry to hear you lost your generator in this way

Anyone would be upset and disappointed if it happened to them!

Good luck replacing it quickly and I hope people will give you real support to make up for the gap in trading

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Lips (26th Aug 2015 - 09:28:14)

NIMBY: everybody does it. Those who deny are the worse because they are happy for the nuisance (e.g. a burger van with generator) to be in the public domain (e.g. lay-by), they will not have it on their own drive! NIMBY smack of privacy and life quality.

Inconvenient: Lay-bys are public facilities created for a specific set of transportation purposes. A burger van and generator get in the way.

Burgers and livelihoods don't alter the fact the van was unsightly and inconvenient. We are all sorry for the loss of livelihood, loss of a village facility and we all object to crime. However, one wrong doesn't cancel the other.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Dawn Hoskins (26th Aug 2015 - 09:57:52)

WOW anyone would have thought I said the antiChrist operated the van!!!

I DO live in the parish (just like everyone else in the outlying hamlets) it is the nature of this parish that the actual village centre houses only a portion of the residents. However, I fail to see how being in a hamlet or in the village centre is relevant in any way whatsoever?

My family and I have used and supported the shop for many years, they are a lovely hard working family and it is a terrible shame that we live in a society that will see an opportunity for theft - and take it.

This does not take away from the fact that many things in our lives are both a blessing and a curse. The burger van is great when you need a burger late at night - sure, but it is still an ugly thing to have parked in the layby. In the same vein - my camper van (and all the various caravans etc) are brilliant things when we want to go whizzing off for the weekend - but are ugly things to look at for the rest of the time.

That doesn't mean that anyone would 'write to the authorities' to complain about it; it is just the way of life.

Sad as it is that this family have had their belongings stolen, I think that it I parked my campervan in a layby overnight: empty, unguarded and with no CCTV - I would have more chance of it being pinched than if it was locked up in my drive. I'm not sure why stating the obvious in this way generates such knee-jerk & angry reactions?

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Lips (26th Aug 2015 - 10:18:46)

Dear Dawn,
The reasons for the usual backlash on this forum:
Political correctness, fingers overly-poised for typing action, simplistic minds who get too upset too easily but most of all half-baked excess righteousness. They will fiercely attack what is perceived as a no-no, unacceptable according to their rules, totally ignoring your reasoning and context. They fail to see the complexity of issues, how the same thing can be both bad and good at the same time. Please don't take any of those too seriously.
After all, this is only a social forum, false names and often not the actual personal views, some just enjoy the tease ;)

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Alison Ryan (26th Aug 2015 - 10:46:21)

Lips,
Did you re read our post?
I think it is the most supercilious piece of writing I have seen in a long while. It smacks of a snobbery which is very unbecoming.
As for false names or using an alias " Lips " is hardly an indication of who you are, and as I can understand you not wanting to be known on some of your posts it is unforgivable to moan at others when you can not put your own name.
As there is only one property opposite the lay by I find it hard to believe being an eyesore is a huge problem to many. Surely it should be the people of this property that say if it is an eye sore.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- helen (26th Aug 2015 - 11:04:00)

There is more than one property opposite the layby. The White House is divided into two separate properties, and there are also other properties there other than the white house.

I think that although the burger van has permission to trade there, it must still impact on residents with the noise of the generator, and late night noise. I personally would not want to eat that sort of thing but other people do.

I cannot see that we all have to think in the same way, one of the freedoms we enjoy in this country is feeedom of speech, sometimes this site needs some posts removed becasue they are defamatory but in general people are polite on here.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- liz (26th Aug 2015 - 11:15:49)

Well said Alison - it struck me as very amusing and ironic how well Lips comments apply to her own postings!

As for being a Nimby - no I wouldn't want a burger van in my drive that is true - that would be very inconvenient - I wouldn't be able to get the car out! :) - But can't see the problem with a large public layby - hardly anyone's driveway. It didn't cause a problem several years ago but then Liphook has changed a lot since then.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Terry (26th Aug 2015 - 12:50:19)

I would like to add my support to Dawn's comments, I have frequently walked through Liphook between11:00pm and 4:00 am just to savour the wonderful sights of Liphook. Imagine my disappointment when I come across a road going vehicle parked on a public highway, it completely shatters the ambience!! I feel strongly that any business trying to meet a need and provide a service to the public should be made to locate the business where nobody can see it and it is difficult to access. To make matters worse the vehicle in question was quite new, clean and presentable not at all in keeping with most other vehicles of that ilk.

Perhaps the parish council could fund a yard available to taxis, burger vans etc, with high powered floodlights, CCTV guards in watchtowers and laser guided missiles? It is ridiculous to expect to be able to leave any vehicle unattended without some odious individual(s) trying to vandalise it and steal anything of value.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Tom (26th Aug 2015 - 12:52:26)

This exchange is brilliant entertainment (although I sympathise with the victim of the theft and the many many subsequent victims of unsightliness and offensively different views to their own). Please keep it going...

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Lips (26th Aug 2015 - 13:22:52)

Alison: I'm unsure how to read or respond to your question.
How would my true name be relevant to the subject of this chat or to my comments on the argument?

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Jules harper (26th Aug 2015 - 13:54:26)

Lips, I think what Alison means is you do a lot of bitching on liphook talkback and hide behind the fake name of lips. My 14yr old daughter refers to people like you as keyboard warriors. On Liphook talkback you should consider changing your name to maybe loose lips.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- helen (26th Aug 2015 - 14:43:29)

I was amused by Alison Ryan saying " did you not read OUR posting? "
perhaps she is using the Royal WE?

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Ann (26th Aug 2015 - 15:21:56)

Helen, Alison left off the 'y'. She meant to say "your" not "our". Clue is in the words in her posting "re read", but perhaps you understood that all along and are just trying to amuse us readers.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Alison Ryan (26th Aug 2015 - 17:05:41)

Helon, Oops, slipped with my cheap keyboard..... the White house is not divided as I know the family who live there.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- helen (27th Aug 2015 - 13:31:04)

hI Alison, I thought you meant Osborne House, which is two seperate residences ?

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Amy (27th Aug 2015 - 14:19:09)

It's a burger van NOT a brothel. I would understand this post if this guy had a stash of ladies in this van not a fryer and all that.

As for the "generator noise" I'm sure the constant traffic and heavy lorries drown it out completely.

This is mental how much of a issue people can make about basically nothing. I'm sorry it was stolen, that's worse than your burger van harming no on in a lay by.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Bora (27th Aug 2015 - 17:35:13)

The van opened back as usuall from today but who ever complains about the generator they must be out of their mind that's because it's the quietest generator on the market that's why horrible thiefs broke into , I don't usually leave the van at layby in the evenings when I closed I take it home it's secure and cameras I have there it was just one night left there couple hours and they demage it I'm angry and disappointed about it but here we go not lot I can do either police ... Anyway to all my customers I open now see u all at the van .

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Helen PRC (27th Aug 2015 - 20:03:23)

Good for you Bora! My word this thread has deteriorated....no one would have had a bad word to say if your van hadn't been vandalised! Forget the curtain twitchers, good business there and full support from the majority including myself x

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Lips (28th Aug 2015 - 05:57:39)

Good luck Bora, best wishes for you.

'Curtain twitchers', NIMBY, snobbish, moaners, conservative... call them what you like (all compliments) - it is with that kind of people that Liphook still has some hope not to become a Bordon too quickly!
If matters were left for the 'friendly', 'liberal', 'nice', free-for-all, come-one-come-all lot: Liphook would have been another orderless inner city wedged between the dual carriage and the rails by now.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Sheila (28th Aug 2015 - 07:32:25)

Glad you have been able to open back up Bora, you have never been a nuisance in mine and many others eyes, a very friendly gentleman who deserves to be able to run his business, a more local man than some of the moaners. KEEP THOSE KEBABS COMING 😊

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Peter Shepherd (28th Aug 2015 - 15:02:32)

Well pleased for you Bora....
Don't take any notice of Dawn, she just wants to be as well known in the village as Kevin Adair and Myself!!!

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Dawn Hoskins (28th Aug 2015 - 18:08:46)

Has ANYONE at all said that Bora or the van is a nuisance???
Nope.

Glad you are back on your feet again Bora.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road

Peter,
I know who Kevin Adair is ---- he puts out fires, But who are you?

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road

I'm Peter Shepherd, don't know you, unless you were christened Fascinated?!?!.....

Ive lived in liphook for 18 years.
Kev Adair yes
But
Peter....... peter who? 😂

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Donna (29th Aug 2015 - 09:45:43)

Looks like this thread is going to turn into "who do you think you are"

Who needs Bordon Rants or Haslemere Rants when you have Liphook TalkBack

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Helen (29th Aug 2015 - 10:11:12)

Peter Shepherd is always advertising for drivers on here. I think he runs courtesy cabs. I do not think though that it matters how well known or not a person is. The burger van has permission to operate there within certain limitations on hours so unless Bora contravenes that in any way there is no point complaining about it. The rubbish that people leave behind is unsightly though and maybe those people who think it is an asset will help remove the litter.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Karina (4th Sep 2015 - 09:23:22)

I think the van is cute, it's new and is part of the local scenery. You can't have garden gnomes everywhere! We should blame the thieves, not the victim of crime. I think we should all show our support for the unfortunate owner and go and have a burger/ kebab/anything else there when they are open.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Rachel (4th Sep 2015 - 12:28:57)

I have to say, I walked past the van the other evening. The new little red generator is truly whisper quite! I was very surprised and very pleased by this. In fact the noise from passing cars was very very loud, far surpassing the very quite new generator.

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Curly, (6th Sep 2015 - 08:58:32)

Entertaining posts. Have you heard the generator, it whispers! bora is louder than it lol innit

Keep up the good work, glad it all sorted and for all you moaners, get a life!

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road

Does Bora sell kebabs or is it just burgers and chips?

Re: Thiefs targeted burger van on Portsmouth road
- Tracy (6th Sep 2015 - 20:07:08)

Yes Bora does sell kebabs, and very nice they are too. I highly recommend him
