Hindhead tunnel
- Editor (28th Jun 2015 - 18:19:11)

Just to let you know that there is heavy traffic in both directions at the moment.

South bound bore is about to be closed with contra flow in the northbound tunnel.

This is to allow emergency resurfacing in the south bore due to a car fire overnight.

Avoid if you can

I was stuck in the 2.5 hour tailback last night until 2.30am with 2 young children in the back on our way home from Lomdon. Car fire in the southbound tunnel, so all lanes north and south closed. We figured out it was a car fire (bearing in mind we were about a mile or so back in the queue), but there was no information available to those stuck in the queue from anyone in authority on scene.

I spoke with the Highways Agency after 1.00am to find out any traffic plans, but they admitted they had no plans to turn traffic around. I asked why they could not use the cross-over (near the tunnel) to allow cars to cross to the northbound A3 but again the HA said they had no information on any plans to do so. Northbound traffic couldn't enter the tunnel (despite the fire being on the other side) so there was no problem in joining that stretch if the HA could have auctioned the cross-over. Some drivers then decided to turn around and drive back up the A3 - heading the wrong way towards the stationary traffic - quite literally folk took the law into their own hands (or more accurately, broke the law by driving the wrong way up the A3).

Drivers had to exit their cars and inform each other on updates.

What's actually depressing about all this is that the tunnel is supposed to be a state of the art piece of civil engineering. But once you've passed Thursley there is no escape route as far as I know. Nor any signboards to inform motorists of incidents before they reach a point of no return.

And the fact that the HA don't have an instant traffic management solution for tunnel closures is bordering on debilitation of their duties. The tunnel gets closed reasonably regularly, so why in 2015 can't the HA find a way of letting folk know what's going on, and getting motorists moving quickly?

This morning on the radio the traffic reports said the restrictions remained in place while the tunnel was being repaired. It wasn't being repaired - it was left like that for over 24 hours before repairs started. Again I just can't believe this is the way our roads are managed in 2015.

Monday morning and the southbound tunnel still has one lane closed.

Why didn`t they leave the old A3 open to be used in emergencies only.

They didn't leave the old A3 open as the idea was to restore the Punchbowl. It seems to me that the problem is not with the tunnel itself, just the way it is managed. - Particularly, as someone has mentioned, no warning of closures or delays southbound until it is too late to turn back.
