Old Thorns vandalism
- Anthony (29th Mar 2015 - 09:43:44)
At the far end of the Old Thorns practice golf range,up the hill, Old Thorns have cut down what looks like a perfectly healthy oak tree which I estimate to be about 100 years old.
Would someone from Old Thorns like to explain the reason behind this outrageous vandalism.Could they possibly have got planning permission ?

Is this another example of old Thorns doing whatever they wish. I would suggest you contact the Tree officer at EHDC and request a report back on their findings.

would it not make sense to ask them first before putting this on here?
knowing how people react to comment like this and everything gets out of hand
If you send a polite email or phone call i am sure they will respond in the same manner
this site has too much gossip and rumour mongering

Gary, I agree with your comment/suggestions regarding in the first instance a polite email or call to enquire with Old Thorns to the status of the felled tree.
Old Thorns sadly have a poor reputation for Tree felling on this site so it would be easy for people to jump to assumptions. I sincerely hope Old Thorns can assure all of us of correct procedure.
I await Old Thorns response with interest.

Old Thorns only have themselves to blame for any public misconception of their recent attempts to clear common land for their own selfish reasons.
A polite call to the forestry commission would be more appropriate.

It amuses me the assumption that all residents and business in Liphook use Talkback. Generally it appears to be the same old names (mine included) that contribute and I suspect only a tiny percentage of the population have ever actually used the site.
I would be extremely surprised if any of the decision makers at Old Thorns bother to read any of the posts so if you are looking for a response to them then you probably need to communicate with them by other means.
Likewise it is possible that those dog walkers who let their beasts poo in the park are oblivious to this site and are therefore completely unaware of the outrage their dogs have caused to Talkback regulars!
Editor, if you have the data it would be interesting to know approximately how many individual contributors there have been to Talkback over that last 6 months or so?

Old Thorns were issued with a restocking notice on the 4th Feb 2015 for land at Old Langley Liss. They have to replant 2,200 trees before 30th June 2016 of which 25% have to be Sessile Oak and 75% Silver Birch. I don't think this would cover the area you are talking about but it does show they are capable of this type of thing.

My goodness - that is a huge amount of trees to replace/to of felled without a licence. As you also say this doesn't include any of the felled trees throughout the Old Thorns land. I am sad that the entire character of the what was a country woodland is now looking like a sparse park land in an artificial setting. I love the fact that Old Thorns contributed to local employment and provides local tourism however I wish it had been done sensitively and in a more holistic manner for the future. Please old Thorns no further Tree felling and no more brick buildings, car movements and hustle and bustle. I am sure you would get more business via green crudentials for people coming out of London wanting a countryside retreat. I have seen in another thread a community spirited person asking for community projects. Perhaps Old Thirns could work with the community on an environmental initiative for young and older locals?

So has anyone found out if the tree is subject to a TPO, part of a group TPO or in a conservation area? Did OT need any consents to fell, did they have them?
Not expressing a view on what OT has or hasn't done, people need to remember that woodlands need management to allow them to flourish and grow... we are so used to this not happening (because of funding cuts), that when it does happen there is outrage. Old and beautiful trees can also become diseased (or die) and therefore need felling before they fall and cause wider damage, sad and unfortunate but part of the life cycle.
For those of you who watch Game of Thrones, the Dark Hedges (google it!) are an amazing set of trees, but are dying (because they are coming to the end of their natural life), its really sad and it will be devastating (especially for tourism), but because they were all planted at the same time, they will all be lost at a similar time.

Sarah, fully agree regarding tree and countryside management however I am not sure the forestry commission chap agrees in the case highlighted in the thread with their report. Sadly for Old Thorns once you create a bad name for yourself you are subject to mud flinging even if doing the right thing.
Old Thorns in my opinion need a PR/communications director. If we hear about some of the good we may not be so fast to fling the mud.. It may even build some community good will towards Old Thorns, or do they believe they are above local opinion and feelings?
