I would like to know as well. I have asked around but no one seems to know

I would have thought the carnival committee were the people to ask. If you don't know who they are go on their web page.

Hello

I can report that we won't be holding a Carnival Fun Day this year. Unfortunately we just don't have enough committee members to organise such a big event in addition to the actual carnival, quiz night and walk.

We are joining forces with the Deer's Hut and helping to make the Classic Car Day an even bigger and better event, so please support us by coming along to this event in June!

Hope that clears up the situation for everyone.

That's such a shame. We are new residents and our neighbours and new friends have all raved about the carnival fun day saying it's great fun and a well attended event. We were so looking forward to taking our children. Is there anything we can do to change your minds?

You mention people are tied up with other events but surely something like a quiz is only for a select few while this is for everybody and should be priority.

I'd be happy to help if it's a case of finding organisers.

I agree with Marie, whilst I am sure the Classic Car day will be, well, classic; surely the carnival fun day is a wonderful event for all villagers both young and old in which to be involved and enjoy.

Surely there are enough local people, who believe in the spirit of community to volunteer assist with organising etc?

The problem is there is not enough people willing (or able) to contribute. On many occasions the Carnival Committee has invited local residents to jump on board, clearly this has not happened. I am sure the invite for additional committee members and helper is an open one, it just needs more people to actually COMMIT.

And yes I am one of those that could help but I just do not have the time. However I do recognise the ENORMOUS amount of work that the committee do and the huge effort that would be needed for a fun day to happen and I think the local community should be completely understanding of the difficulties the committee have to deal with in keeping the Carnival going

I'll put up a prize for you to guess how many people there are currently on the help list for the Carnival.

Karen says it every few weeks, we NEED more people to commit to help, even if it's only for 2 days a year.

Having been a member of a 'too small' committee, I can totally understand why the Carnival Fun Day on the green is not possible.

From my own experience, I found that the committee I was a part of had a plethora really nice ideas for fundraising and community events that we would've loved to organise. Despite our best efforts, people just didn't want to commit to helping out and organising the events.

Even when we managed to recruit helpers for an event, I usually found myself and a minority of the committee were left to pick up the pieces and spend time we didn't have to do jobs that other people said they would do, but didn't.

The Carnival Committee does a fantastic job with limited people power behind it - I can't imagine the time it takes to implement such big events, and the committee members also have families and jobs at the same time so it really must be a feat of multi-tasking.

The Carnival Fun Days are great, but with the number of different activities, stalls, music, food etc. to organise, it must take a huge amount of time to arrange, and for proportionately less profit towards the Carnival than things such as the Quiz and the Carnival Walk.

Ultimately we must remember that fundraising for the Carnival in October is the whole point of these events, and so the relative time-profit involved is probably a factor in deciding which events to run when there are limited people organising.

In case anyone hasn't been to the Classic Car Day before, it is always a really vibrant and fun event - even if you're not that interested in cars generally. There's often a BBQ organised by the Scouts, and live music, and it does seem to make sense for the Carnival Committee to collaborate on that instead of investing in a separate event when resources are low. I'm sure their involvement will add a lot of fun to the event so hopefully it will encourage people to pop down there who wouldn't usually.

The Carnival Committee have regularly issued pleas for people to join them, and I'm sure they have great fun and satisfaction when they see the results of all their hard work. It must also be demoralising when they get feedback like that from last year when so many people opined that the Carnival was outdated and should stop... At least this thread now shows that there are people who look forward to their events and appreciate what they do.

Maybe this thread will spur some new people to get involved, and they can recruit some more people who are truly in it for the long haul. But please think about the challenges they face before criticising the cancellation of this event. They are just normal residents of Liphook, giving up their time voluntarily to continue the tradition that has run for over 100 years - for no gain to themselves other than the thanks and satisfaction of a job well done - so thank you very very much for all the work you put in for our community. I'd love to get involved myself but my lifestyle means I am all over the place and can't really commit to anything for fear of having to drop out at the last minute!
