New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- kate (27th Mar 2015 - 19:36:58)

Like to say how nice the burger was from our new burger and van in the square. :)

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- Dave (27th Mar 2015 - 23:44:15)

I love a good burger and will try one, however does Liphook need yet another fast food joint? a lot of people talk about how the village could be improved in terms of shopping or a gateway to the south downs type place.

One of the big issues is we have dozens of take away's and not one of them, no disrespect intended is of a very high standard. Few if any of them have painted their businesses or jazzed anything up in years.

New Alresford on the A272 is smaller than Liphook, its full of posh shops and is a fine day out, of course you can get a fry up or a burger in New Alresford but do they have hundreds more visitors enjoying the place and spending money because its got the variety we don't.

Daisy's, The flower shop, Bike shop, a Bank, Chemist & 2 pubs are about the only place's on our high street making the place look like its worth stopping at or even coming too. The rest is either derelict/closed, a take way or an estate agent. If we ran a few red buses through it and added a little litter it wouldn't look much different than forgotten crap corner of London what with a take away in every other shop and an estate agent in between.

Isn't it ironic, if anyone ever says anything good about anything, especially food, someone just has to have a bad thing to say about somewhere else. Usually nothing to do with the first remark

yummmmmmy a burger from OUR new burger and van , things are looking up for Liphook!!

We had delicious chicken and chips from the new burger van, 4 good sized chicken pieces freshly cooked and portion of chips £6.50 so good value too - happy days

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- Colin (29th Mar 2015 - 00:13:54)

Yeah well said Wendy, the 2nd poster made a comprehensive and intelligent view of Liphook, I mean he even said he likes burgers yet you identify him as the “moaner” in your “MOAN”.
There are too many takeways and estate agents. God forbid anyone whom makes a point that could matter about our village as before long the “oh don’t be so negative” and the “fun Police” turns up with their opinions.
If you haven't got the sense to see through the 1st poster as a CHEAP "advertisement" most probably by the person and or mate's of the very same person flipping said burgers then your deluded.

I thought the van was only temporary whilst the kebab shop was being re-fitted? So isn't it the same staff selling the same food in the van?

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- claire (29th Mar 2015 - 21:46:23)

Surely the amount of takeaway outlets who stay in business must reflect the demand for their products.

We will never see a bustling village centre with diverse shops because we made a decision that we wanted a large supermarket instead. Much as I used to like being able to shop at the fish mongers & greengrocers I also like the covenience of a supermarket.

In my head I imagine I would love to wander in and out of little shops clasping my wicker shopping basket with a gingham liner being greeted by cheery shop keepers. The reality is I rush into Sainsburys or Waitrose, heave all my bags in to the boot of the car and go home.

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- helen (30th Mar 2015 - 00:42:53)

I think that if there were no demand for it in Liphook it would move elsewhere, obviously not everyone can afford to eat in the Deers Hut!
There is not enough parking to attract the small shopkeepers, also the competition from Sainsburys, although small shops seem to do OK in Haslemere, despite Waitrose being busy. There have been small shops but some have not lasted long.

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- liz (30th Mar 2015 - 08:19:07)

Claire

I don't know how long you have lived in Liphook but we didn't "make a decision to have a large supermarket instead". We had no choice about the supermarket and most Liphook residents at the time were very sad to see the departure of the excellent independent greengrocers and butchers.

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- Terry (30th Mar 2015 - 17:12:30)

Well said Liz, very few people welcomed the announcement that Sainsbury's supermarket was to open in the village, all the warnings came true and Liphook lost it's heart.

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- sam (Not Sammmmmmmmmmmmm! the dealer)) (30th Mar 2015 - 22:46:37)

One thing that would be helpful on this forum is to avoid viewing it as a battleground in which we need to score points from those that post.
As I see it, Claire, Liz & Terry all make the same point (Yes the latter 2 slayed the former, refer to 1st paragraph above)
Sainsbury’s murdered our high street, FACT. I have been to New Alresford and see exactly the same things as Dave. However New Alresford only has a co-op of a similar size to our own and no major player. I do like Sainsbury’s, but it does go a long way to explaining why we have a billion sub standard takeaways whom can’t be arsed to improve their outlets and are happy to dole out boring fried heart attacks because the big boy Sainsbury’s isn’t open when its dark to complete with them. Also Alresford’s parking isn’t alot better than our own.
Essentially we have a swarm of parasites clogging our veins and existing on the time frame outside of Sainsbury’s, but this does not explain why have 4 more estate agents than we need, some of them look like their office was decorated in the 60’s, who walks up to these places and thinks’ “ohh that looks like a great place to sell everything I ever worked for

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- Well, Not sure (30th Mar 2015 - 23:41:28)

Liz, your post is inaccurate re the veg shop closure. According to the then owners, the closure of Barclays bank (dentist now) and the removal of the cash dispenser was the killer blow. The butchers in Midhurst Rd, I believe, had an issue with a rent review and went to Country Market.
For the record, I am not a fan of Sainsbury. I believe they have had, and will continue to have, more out of the local community than they will ever be bothered to return to it.
Such is corporate attitudes to the "little people"

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- liz (31st Mar 2015 - 09:38:50)

Sam
I did not 'slay' the previous poster, I merely disagreed which is not the same thing at all.

Well, not sure
I was told by both the butchers and the greengrocers that they were closing because they felt they would not be able to compete with Sainsburys. Could have been the last straw but was definitely a factor. I can only go by what they told me at the time.

Re: New in the square burger and sausage van.
- Mary W (2nd Dec 2017 - 12:21:49)

Interesting that one of the posters mentions the lack of parking in our dying centre.

I see the sausage and burger’s huge vehicle appears to be parked permanently all day in the parking lay-by now, cutting 3 car spaces out for shoppers. It’s been there for at least a week.

Can any business now park permanently in a lay-by? Not much point in other trades buying a shop - park and work from a van and save oodles of cash!

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- Pat (2nd Dec 2017 - 18:35:40)

From reading previous posts the van needs to park nearby at night as its full of hot oil and cant be sped off to very far away, if you have ever watched it drive away from the layby at night its driven painfully slowly. They used to park in the pub car park but recently got asked to leave and or pay for it, it wouldnt surprize me if the Royal Anchor want rid of them as burgers etc purchased at the van are not going into their till. The Anchor has used tactics like this before, back when the Dragon was struggling the Dragon started breakfasts and within a week the Anchor was opening early with a massive sign also doing breakfasts too :) its all fair in business and am sure the Anchor want to put their foot on the neck of all local beer and food serving companies.
The van people did ask for help recently with parking and didnt receive any help so I guess before long they will be forced elsewhere and we can all rejoice at the return of 1 car parking space and the end of kebabs with just chinese takeaways left to feed us.

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- Mary W (3rd Dec 2017 - 09:36:07)

Just a thought - a large vehicle occupying a couple of spaces permanently in a lay-by and bus stop probably prevents 50 or 60 people visiting other businesses in the square or meeting friends from the bus.
I would have thought it was intended for passing trade.
I’m surprised one of the supporters doesn’t offer a space outside their own house?
Owners of some nice properties in the immediate area must regret paying a relatively high price to live there only to be plagued with the smell of boiling fat as they sit in their gardens on a summer’s evening... I’m sure you would all welcome it in your own homes.

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- Ian (3rd Dec 2017 - 12:21:49)

I believe they used to have the premises in London Road that are currently empty but decided to operate out of the van for financial reasons, shame as they used to do pizza as well and you could sit in. Perhaps they could move back to the premises?

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- John (3rd Dec 2017 - 19:18:15)

I heard the financial reasons that put them out of the London road premises was a very deliberate price hike as the owner of those premises is lining up some development and wanted them out.

The existing van owners are not the same people either, the people in London road bought the existing van but sold the business off to the present owners, so the present owners never had anything to do with the London road premises.

I think it's a shame some people are attempting to hunt them out of liphook over a car space, liphooks retail environment is frankly embarrassing, estate agents and sub standard takeaways many of whom haven't had a lick of paint since the 70's intermixed with a load of closed premises gathering dust.

Re: New in the square burger and sasuage van.
- Hayley (5th Dec 2017 - 17:23:18)

I have very recently moved here from New Alresford so was intrigued to see it get a mention here. Yes, it's pretty with a great deal of independent shops, but most are so extortionately priced that the locals avoid them like the plague. One of the 2 Indian restaurants is good and the 1 Chinese is terrible. It has a great chippy and there's Pizza Express. The tapas restaurant is really expensive as are the two tea shops. It has a kebab van at night that does a great trade. I think the watercress line is what attracts most people to the area. Without that it's just a little overpriced town. I personally prefer Liphook.
