The Links today - awful food
- Jay (12th Mar 2015 - 18:57:49)

Went to The Links today and ordered a main course of 'Cumberland Ring, bacon bubble and squeak, white pudding, orange marmalade (!), rich jus'.

The bubble and squeak had no potato in it, so how it could be called bubble and squeak is beyond me. It appeared to be just an extremely bitter cabbage and was unpalatable. The Cumberland sausage was hard, I suspect overcooked, and the marmalade contributed nothing - a pretentious and unsatisfying combination for the huge price of £13.95. The white pudding was the only edible ingredient.

I queried the bubble and squeak, and the the young server said he would report it to the kitchen, but I heard no more.

Other people had 'lemonade and lime battered cod, and reported it as tasteless. That cost £12.95.

I'd hoped to enjoy the meal enough to be able to say that at last I'd found a local restaurant where you could get a reasonable lunch. Sadly, I shan't be going there again, unless they get a new chef and stop messing about with old favourites.

Does not surprise me. Do they stil charge £3 for 12 French Fries in dolls house saucepan? :)

What a shame another pub had gone down the fancy sheffy path... large plates, large price, small portions.
My fish actually tasted good, but if the pre-chopped cooked veg tasted of anything at all - they were freezer flavoured!
I wish pubs would stick to beer and simple food, bring on that Italian family restaurant!

Saw announcement the Wetherspoons, from Wednesday next 8.00am - 2.00pm, will be serving £2.99 fried breakfast, with filter coffee and free refills 99p.

Haslemere, Petersfield, Alton and Guildford, here I come!

I recently had a meal at the weatherspoons Haslemere and was pleasantly surprised by the changes, all for the better, there were lots of meal deal options, superfood salad, and pasta dishes, not everything comes with chips. Each meal description has a calorie count and lots of allergy and nutrition info. One can have different days promotions, eg wednesday is different chicken meal deals, thursday curries, and fridays fish. I believe tues is steak night. You could have a meal deal option of a meal and alcoholc drink for about 7 pounds. The Meal I had was fresh and tasty, a big improvement.

not at all, because the original poster was purely posting about the links. Most pubs do not want to pay enough or, do not employ chefs with good professional chefs qualifications, so they are not really able to do more than reheat what has either been prepared to go straight into the deep fat fryer, or serve dishes which arrive in the pub on a brake brothers van already pre prepared. The test of a good chef is whether there are any puddings on the menu described as made at the pub.
Instead they try and make money by offering a menu of fashionable dishes and flavours, but this only works properly if the chef has made at least some of it from scratch. The amount of mis description too is awful, pate, described as homemade and yet it is obvious it is not. At least Weatherspoons do not overcharge for ordinary food!

I used to enjoy the local pub foods in liphook. Links used to be enjoyable as did the Anchor. But both have gone to pot. The only places in liphook i can recommend on quality, portion size and price to eat at, try the gurkha or the black fox. Both exceptional food, good portions and never disappoint.

If you all want a really first class meal with lovely service, go to The Deer's Hut, yes, it is a bit pricey, yes, you have to wait for your meal, but it's all freshly cooked, beautrifully presented and well worth the money

looking for good food try the Flying Bull at Rake, I found really good food, mostly home made, and locally sourced at very reasonable prices.

Another good pub for grub is the Jolly Drovers at Hillbrow - food is excellent - if you go on a Sunday you must book a table because it`s so popular. Staff are very friendly too - always guaranteed a laugh with Barry!
