Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lan tern (10th Feb 2015 - 19:45:22)

Is this Liphook's new Gypsy caravan camp? Or is it a carpark?
EHDC you need to sort this out properly because so far this problem has just moved from Radford Park car park to London Rd Layby and now to the Iron Hill carpark.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lips (11th Feb 2015 - 06:40:55)

Not just moving from one Liphook spot to another, but also increasing in numbers and the associated residents' complaints of ASBO. Watch this space, and do have a read of other relevant threads.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Resident (11th Feb 2015 - 07:58:28)

Also, there is an application for planning permission for a site (12 caravans/6 families) at the top of Devils Lane.......is this something Liphook residents want? If not, take a look at the application on line make your comments reference 52747/009.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Andy (11th Feb 2015 - 12:43:31)

Actually iron hill car park is in west sussex so it is not ehdc problem. It is wscc problem and therefore not classed as part of liphook

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Diane (12th Feb 2015 - 12:37:16)

Easy solution to this problem. The caravans can go and squat on the Devils Lane site untill permission is granted. There is obviously a lot of room as permission is being asked for 12 residential homes and 6 amenity blocks. I guess the owners would welcome them.

- meg (12th Feb 2015 - 15:06:48)

To be honest the ones on devils lane have been there for ages , I dont see a issue with it at all , what's the difference between that and all the houses being built, just because people have a problem with gypsies its pathetic and wrong. The only difference is they live in a caravan. They are lovely people , stop being so narrow minded and judgemental.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lips (12th Feb 2015 - 23:12:27)

There are a few threads running in this forum on an increasing number of local gypsy issues. There are some who have taken on themselves the role of gypsy supporters / defenders. They often allow themselves to be fiercely judgemental and use swearword like bigot, prejudice, narrow-minded, racist etc…
Tolerance should go both ways; no need to reduce civilised social arguments to aggressive accusations which are in themselves the embodiment of intolerance. Firstly, you don’t have to read anything, secondly you don’t have to take it personally, thirdly, you don’t have agree, lastly, you don't have to respond. This is the essence of tolerance and freedom of expression.
Some how, some of those who’s opinion are closer to mainstream political correctness consensus assume themselves in the right and try to intimidate those of varying opinions. There are many who feel they can’t express their views due to those attacks. Tolerance to different opinions / views is not less moral than the protection of minorities or eccentric lifestyles.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- ellie (13th Feb 2015 - 10:23:46)

Sometimes, the objections are not based on the personal characteristics but on the disparity between what is available when one claims"gypsy" status.. and the rest of the population.

How many of us could otherwise purchase some land in the countryside, turn up to hook up all the services live in a caravan on site, claim gypsy status, apply for retrospective planning permission, be allowed to stay there, then 5 years later, claim that the moblie home they have created is no longer needed, and now need to build a normal brick house on the land, and remove the gypsy statius to be able to sell it on immediately.

This is only allowed because the status of gypsy has been applied to the family, regardless of what other permanent roots they have in the area. A change in the law is long overdue.

Any updates on this? Have they moved on?

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- FS (27th Feb 2015 - 00:01:12)

Long gone

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- helen (27th Feb 2015 - 09:46:44)

I think they moved to the new Devils Lane site currently awaiting a decision.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark moving to Devils Lane?
- Cornelia (27th Feb 2015 - 17:18:31)

Having met a local councillor this morning on her pre-election rounds, we brought up this subject, ie Devils Lane site, and she informed us that once two more caravans appear on the Devils Lane site, thus making a total of six in all then the council will be able to act which,we believe, means to remove them.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Another Resident (27th Feb 2015 - 20:46:33)

I believe anybody can apply for planning even if they do not own the land ?
We can get two more in there surely?
Well let's get rollin rollin rollin.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- dawn (27th Feb 2015 - 23:20:53)

Cornelia, they already have permission to keep of horses, have 2 stable blocks, caravans, hard standing, septic tank and outhouse.

They own the land.

Who do you think is going to remove them?

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- A. Ryan (28th Feb 2015 - 08:47:57)

Dawn ,you are behind the times.
This site is up the other end of the lane, nearer Highfield School.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lily (1st Mar 2015 - 11:01:56)

To Claim gypsy status, one has to prove beyond doubt that they are decent from gypsy. Gypsies don't actually refer to themselves as gypsy. They call themselves traveller. They use traveller because they always have to travel. Gypsy came about as a derogatory term for an egyptian from 1500 c From those times to this day, they are travellers because they're not allowed to settle. Hounded out, moved on. It really makes me sick that people moan about them being able to have permission for a settlement able to be dismantled. They bought the land, the council has a duty to allow permission if sites are not provided. There would be moaning if a gypsy bought a house next door to you. My god! Do you want the final solution??? Where do you actually want them to go? I use"you" to address the people who take umbrage to one trying to just live their life in the only way possible.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lips (1st Mar 2015 - 16:02:43)

'the only way possible'? - do the rest of us live their lives in IMpossible ways?
As long as my neighbour is a decent, legal and civilised neighbour - i don't care what name they choose to call themselves.
I do expect those who come to my village to observe and respect the local way of life, not to impose new way upon us, share the burden and not have superior entitlements to mine.
No need for planning permission to travel through Liphook. Make a home like the rest? get permission like the rest.
New social / cultural enrichments and diversity are welcome by anonymous democratic votes - the only true representation of peoples' will in a PC world.

What is all this 'final solution' nonsense? Get real!

For the repeating question: 'where do you want them to go?': If one is not welcome anywhere, might they change their ways to become welcome?

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lily (14th Mar 2015 - 00:04:09)

Lips..
Final solution please???

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lips (14th Mar 2015 - 05:50:37)

Lily,
When you write ‘final solution’, are you referring to the misleading historical connotation from your previous contribution? See my response to that in my previous contribution.
Or are you asking the repeated question: what might resolve the tensions surrounding gypsies settling in Liphook? Again: read my previous contribution.
I hope this helps.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Mort (16th Mar 2015 - 18:41:38)

Firstly I would like to say the "my village" comment made me giggle. Do you own liphook lips? Are you the queen of liphook? It is not "your village".
Secondly. You expect them to observe and respect the new way of life and not impose their way of living on you. Well are you not imposing your way of life on them? Why should they live how you say? Going back to my first comment "are you the queen of liphook"?
Why don't you observe and respect their way of life? Travellers have lived in liphook for many many years and no one has had a problem with them until if became a toffy nosed community.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lips (16th Mar 2015 - 22:39:20)

Mort,
The argument for the general population to respect the gypsy way of life was already covered previously on here. Having read your post, I choose not to waste time discussing my views with you. However, your semantics and use of language:
1) I am not yet The Queen of Liphook, nor are you Lily.
2) ‘My village’ is the usual way one refers to their home village; that does not mean one owns this village.
3) Your choice to describe this village as ‘toffee nosed community’ could easily be taken as offensive / abusive. I guess this one will go unnoticed, free speech. Conversely, imagine the outcry and backlash should posters lower their argument to use similar language to describe the gypsies!!!!

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- may (17th Mar 2015 - 19:15:12)

Hi lips, I think most of those complaining have already called travellers every name they can including thieves, remember the accusation of theft from the coop and of course the wheels bin theft, lol you make me laugh. Travellers have lived in liphook for generations, for much longer than you I suspect, so really more their village than could ever be yours or any newby.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Shauna (17th Mar 2015 - 20:12:19)

Guess they are not \"travelers\" then........

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lips (18th Mar 2015 - 05:48:01)

Hi May,
I\'m glad I made you laugh.
Have a nice week.

And thank you gipsies to have established this village, made it the success it is. Where would Liphook be without the excellence and massive contribution by gypsies! So the gypsies built our infrastructure (transport, housing, schools)?...... ---Well, at least according to some peoples\' history!
Thank goodness records exist that tell us the real story of Liphook\'s past.

Thank you gipsies allowing us mere non-gipsies to share your own-made village. We are but your guests here, and what brilliant hosts you do make!

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Ian (18th Mar 2015 - 07:51:30)

Lips, have you ever read Mein Kampf? I would also be interested to know what you feel you have contributed to your village.

And no, you are not being bullied or picked on which is your normal response to being challenged on your predudicial views, I am just expressing my views on your offensive comments expressed on this and other talkback posts about travellers.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- may (18th Mar 2015 - 14:55:55)

My thoughts exactly Ian, also lips I have never said that it was the travellers village, what I did say that it was probably more theirs than yours having had connections with liphook for many generations, how long have you had connections with"your village?"

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lips (18th Mar 2015 - 17:09:16)

What is a 'connection'? how is it proven? All gipsies here are of long Liphook pedigree? The rest are not? Please...
What is the significance? SOME gypsies may have been around here for a long time. That does not imply they alone established the village or they were the ones who made Liphook what it is today.

Where do we put the line in the above suggested order of seniority (for whatever it matters)? There were others before the gypsies here, so what? Should we embrace the infrastructure, economics and technology of those long-gone days some are referring to? No social benefits, no political correctness back in them days! Gipsies were persecuted! Are these the times on which we want to base our way of life today? or is it cherry-picking?

At some point the majority make a decision, draw a line, on what we want to have in our village; minorities can join in or remain in the margins (using legitimate manners to bring changes) or leave.

I fail to see why should the Liphook majority accept what they perceive as antisocial or illegal aspects of an ancient (or is it) minority lifestyle?

Surely the will of the majority of contributing residents should be number one concern.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Ian (18th Mar 2015 - 18:56:10)

Lips, are you saying your views represent the majority of Liphook? If so you are wrong! I'm sure many law abiding people will agree that if an individual person or family breaks the law they should be dealt with, but in my experience of the good folk of Liphook, very few would share your unpleasant sentiments and generalisations.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lips (18th Mar 2015 - 19:38:05)

True opinions can only be counted by proper anonymous votes, not by one's whims.
Unpleasant situations are reflected via unpleasant views, alternatively unpleasant views can be beautified or swept away from factual life.
Generalisations facilitate sensible arguments and should always be taken as generalisations; It is not rocket science

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lily (21st Mar 2015 - 22:15:02)

Lips,
I am lily. I disclosed my full name on a previous thread. I do not use an alias. You, however, do... I am not responsible for other peoples thoughts or postings. I will tell you what my gypsy father has done for the economy though in this village and the surrounding area.
My father built a house in headley, which is rented. My father built a house in Farnham, which he sold. My father built a house in havant, which is rented. My father built a house in Leigh park, which was sold. My father built a house in bordon, which he lives in. My father inherited a house in liphook, which is rented. Please figure out all the tax he has/is paying into the system for those communities.
May I ask, what is your contribution?

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lily (23rd Mar 2015 - 21:57:50)

Lips,
I couldn't help but notice how you slid the word anonymous in. A passionate person does not mind standing by their convictions, and will disclose their name,as I have. I feel that you are potentially someone who runs with foxes and the hounds.

Re: Gypsies at Iron Hill Carpark
- Lily (23rd Mar 2015 - 22:02:35)

To Ian,
My sentiments exactly, only I feel you put them across far more articulate than me.
