Portsmouth Road Sewage
- Col (19th Dec 2014 - 23:47:26)

Poor old Portsmouth Road really isn't doing too well at the moment. First the car crash, and now we have a stream of raw sewage floating down the road from the Fletchers field pedestrian entrance. And this is not the first time this has happened now. It has been reported but it could take 4 hours to solve according to Thames Water...

Really makes you wonder, if this is happening now when some of the flats (affected by car crash) are vacant, what the sewage system load is going to be like once the Silent garden housing and Bohunt Manor housing developments are complete?

Surely the council, South Downs, or the housing development offices can not ignore this? How can they say the infrastructure can cope with more housing and ignore the increased strain it will put on the village's infrastructure?

Col's message was at 23:47 last night - seemingly he was told four hours to fix it. it is now over 12 hours later and still there is sewage flowing along the road and more to the point down driveways into some of the houses.

Can't believe this is not being taken seriously!

Quick update - managed to get through to Thames Water - basically they know it was reported yesterday and I was told it is scheduled to be fixed this afternoon. I emphasised the raw sewage but "we are very busy you know" - even for an obvious public health issue which really ought to be treated much more as an emergency / priority.

The more people that call them then perhaps they'll move a bit quicker - their call line is 0800 316 9800. use option 2 for drains and sewers.

Looks like cooking fat coming out of the drain cover.

Could be worth the council trying to find out where it's coming from, because if it's a restaurant dumping their fat down there it's going to keep clogging up, so they need to stop and the residents need to be educated too. I guess it depends which direction the drains flow, ie to Station Road or away, SouthEast Water will have a map showing the run.

Unbelievable, how awful for the homes with raw sewage running towards them.
There has been a horrible stink around that area for many years! Every time I walk past I have to hold my breath!
Why has this been left for so long! People will become very ill and sick over Christmas if this is not sorted asap!

I reported this to Thames Water at 6pm last night. When I went out at 9am this morning they still hadn`t done anything to it.
When I came back at 1 they were cleaning the pavement.

If this happens again, it can also be worth contacting Environmental Health at EHDC on either the normal office number or out of hours on 07850 358156.

Rachel, do you have the right location. I walk past here almost everyday and I've never noticed a constant terrible smell! Very odd

Re: Portsmouth Road Sewage
- Tina (21st Dec 2014 - 09:26:49)

Rachel, you are right it often smells by that point and has done for years as I live just past there. I have highlighted this to Thames Water and in the past there has often been drainage companies investigating the drains, but not for a long time now. The drains can't cope with the amount going down them, but no updating seems to happen, there have been two more houses added just by it, did the developer have to pay anything towards upgrading the drains, I guess not, and if he did Thames water don't seem to use it. Col is right if we add all the purposes houses it will be a right mess, drains overflowing, gridlock in the village with traffic, the pier cuts will probably return, we will never get a doctors apt, developers should be made to invest in these things before being allowed to build

Tina's right. This has been the case around this manhole cover for 20 odd years. I used to live around Fletchers Field and regularly walked the dog along there to reach the fields by the church centre. Actually, thinking about it, it was more like 23 years!

The fact it's still happening indicates to me more of a blockage than anything else, as it's an issue that was happening long before the flats/houses were built on the former garage sites by Station Road

Shocking to see that this issue still hasn't been fully resolved!

We have noticed the smell there too.

i live on the Portsmouth road and it smells most of the time.
it is sometimes so strong , i feel sick when i have to go past it to get to the station. its overflowed more than once with loo roll and other 'stuff''.
something needs to be sorted out, the path has still got muck and loo roll on it in places.
its only going to get worse with the new houses, i cant understand why this has not been sorted.

It has been a while since I've had the computer on.

Has this been cleared up off the road and pavements now?

Re: Portsmouth Road Sewage
- J (30th Dec 2014 - 16:46:15)

No,It has not been cleaned where they parked their vans outside Field Place Cottage whilst cleaning the rest of the road, and it still smells here.

Re: Portsmouth Road Sewage
- Neighbour (7th Jan 2015 - 23:02:31)

It does often stink along this road, my children often comment on it! Normally on an afternoon-probably after dozens of toilet flushes from the old people's home!

I agree with previous threads-how can EHDC and South Downs allow any further buildings to be added onto this sewer line? It clearly can not cope! Developments are too quick to go up without any proper money going into the surrounding infrastructure. Developers want to cash their money in, leave and leave us residents with the mess! Let's hope the absurd Bohunt development will NOT go ahead!
