Food bank
- Sarah D (13th Dec 2014 - 16:49:04)

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if Liphook has a food bank? I know there is one operating in Liss and Haslemere.

I would like to donate some food items to help those who are struggling financially this Christmas.

If there isn\'t one, would anyone be interested in starting one with me?

Thank you

Hi as far as I am aware, no there is not. I believe though they have to be started by a recognised charity? As people have to get vouchers from the social services to hand over, I believe proof that someone is on benefit or a low wage has be evidenced, you cannot just turn up and ask for food. I believe that the churches over in Borden help organise one over there.Perhaps if you find out his to officially start one then you would get help from the churches in Liphook? good luck!

Yeah you need a voucher either from CAB, sure start centres, councils, social services etcetc!

Hi

Fabulous idea Sarah, but as stated you need a referral from CAB, Doctor, health profession etc.
Our nearest Food banks are Farnham & Alton.

My Husband, is apart of Farnham Masonic centre, and this year, he chose his charity donations, for Farnham food bank, and used the money to buy gifts for boys and girls, as well as selection packs(chocolate).

If only we had something a bit closer to home, to collect & provide.

There is not a food bank in Liphook at the moment because they need a large store to store things in. Yes people have to use vouchers which they receive from the benefits office. I think that Liphook Methodist Church are a collection point and also the Church Centre. A team of people are working from Bordon but need facilities to operate from in Liphook so a store room is needed for donations of items to be distributed from which would be a start.

There is a food bank in Bordon at St Mark's church on Pinehill Road - near the shopping centre. I beleive that you can donate via the Liphook Parish Church and would suggest contacting the church office or the vicar. Office Tel: 01428 725390

The Salvation Army also do a huge amount of work at this time of year and are grateful for funding but also gifts to give children who may not otherwise get anything. They do not take second hand as the children they are giving to rarely see anything new. Best thing is to call them and see what they need as they will have identified families in need and will be able to tell you what age and sex the children are. Not sure which number I used last year but try this one.

Thank you everyone for your replies. It would be great if someone in Liphook would donate some space for storage of food items.

I know that Liss churches use The Crossover and Bordon has one, but it would be good to have one in Liphook.

If it is only donated food and not money I don\'t see why it needs to be a charity starting it? Perhaps one of the local churches is interested in starting one? I am sure people would be happy to donate items & volunteer time?

I don't think it needs to be a registered charity unless cash is involved, and it doesn't need a huge amount of storage space - the Liss food bank started in someone's domestic garage.

Waitrose have set up collection points for food banks in their stores. Perhaps Sainsburys could do likewise?

Re: Food bank
- ellie (15th Dec 2014 - 17:10:34)

There is a group called the TRussell trust I think too who organise these things. It has to be a proper charity for the Social Services to be involved There would also have to be CRB checks etc, as possibly vunerable people are involved.

Hello!

I know this will be controversial.... But, do we actually need a food bank here in Liphook?

(Genuine question)

Re: Food bank
- h (17th Dec 2014 - 12:45:13)

I have contact with people in liphook with real need, yes. Sn elderly blind lady, struggling to cope on her own, probably bypassed by the social services because she cannot claim online, a young pregnant girl kicked out of home living in a liphook hostel. benefits not started yet, no money for food. Until you are livimg life a the sharp end it is easy to think that Liphook consists of affluent people. Yes there are those as well but there are also people in need who get overlooked. If you are out at work or driviimg around in your car you may not see them but they are there! People without children too who are perhaps single. unemployed, not gettimg much benefit ?

Re: Food bank
- Sarah (17th Dec 2014 - 18:20:36)

Maybe as a community we could help these people more directly if they are genuinely in need?

Re: Food bank
- Sarah D (17th Dec 2014 - 21:52:08)

Again, thank you everyone for your replies. I am aware of Liss Foodbank and also Bordon & Haslemere, but also feel we really need one in Liphook.

I work with very vulnerable adults and children also and see the need constantly. I am able to work with some very generous other local charities who regularly help out, but a Liphook Foodbank would really help the most vulnerable in our community.

Anyone willing to look into setting one up with me? I don't have a lot of spare time but would be very happy to work towards getting one started and volunteer any spare time I can.

The one in liss only stores dry food items, pasta, tins etc and not perishable items. They then package up into mixed bags suitable for 1 person, family etc.

The vouchers are then given to local GP,s , schools, churches, CAB etc and information published locally so those in need know how to apply.

The vouchers don't need to be complicated and can be exchanged for food. The one in liss is open 1 day a week for a couple of hours and can deliver items to those less able.

It would be so lovely to set something up - please let me know if anyone else is interested. We would need somewhere to store items and collection/donation points.

No money would exchange hands so no CRB checks needed (although I do have one) - don't think anyone is going to steal unless they really need food!

Looking forward to hearing from anyone willing to take this forward into 2015!

Sarah :)

- ellie (18th Dec 2014 - 11:55:29)

Hi, I think if you researched it better I may be interestedbut CRB checks are for the protection of clients not to imply the volunteers will, steal?

Re: Food bank
- M (18th Dec 2014 - 18:46:25)

Yes I would be interested to help you out.

Re: Food bank

CRB checks do not exist, they have been replaced by DBS checks.

Re: Food bank
- Carry (18th Dec 2014 - 22:32:11)

Hello Sarah
It is refreshing to read of someone who is prepared to do something for the community on a matter they feel strongly about. There is far too much moaning and criticism of others on this medium. I am sorry I am unable to take on any more voluntary work but wish you good luck with the project. Happy Christmas.

Re: Food bank
- Sarah D (18th Dec 2014 - 23:26:46)

Hi Ellie & M,

Thank you for your replies. I will contact Liss food bank and see if they needed CRB/DBS checks for volunteers and any other useful info.

I think it will really depend on finding storage and collection point. Liss operates 1 morning per week for a couple of hours for a community building.

When I have found out more I will post, unless anyone finds out more in the meantime.

Many thanks for all replies and internet.

Sarah

Hi everyone,

We have a food back collection at the Church Centre in Liphook. All items are taken up to the Haslemere food bank on a regular basis and distributed to local people in need, across the area. We've had lots of donations from people within the church, ahead of Christmas, but we'd welcome further donations from the whole community too.

If you'd like to drop something off, we'll gladly ensure it's delivered to the team in Haslemere. Just call by the Church Office (open Mon-Thurs 9.30am-12.30pm). Due to Christmas holidays etc, it might be worth giving the office a ring in advance, just to check someone's there: 01428 725390.

Alternatively, come along to any of our Christmas services and just drop off the items in the big red box in the foyer.

Happy Christmas!

Sarah,

Our church is a recognised charity and would like to support your proposal of setting up a food bank in Liphook.

My family and I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and as a church we have a comprehensive Humanitarian Aid programme. We are keen to get this going in time for Christmas.

There is a food bank collection box at Liphook ST Marys
Church Centre on the Portsmouth Road.

Re: Food bank
- Sara jane (28th Nov 2017 - 17:25:37)

I agree it's sad when people and single parents can't afford food, but I see them smoking and drinking in th e pub at weekends, then go and buy themselves big screen tvs in Sainsburys, think they need to get their priorities right some times

Re: Food bank
- Amy (28th Nov 2017 - 21:12:28)

I'm happy to help with the food bank if one is started here.. I've had to use the food bank before.. and I wish the judgey comments would stop

Re: Food bank
- helen (29th Nov 2017 - 08:31:13)

Hi Sarah Jane, you say you have seen "them"? unless you yourself are in the same queue at the foodbank how do you know it is the same people at the pub smoking?
Food prices have really gone up lately, but that is in my opinion the brexitiers fault, not poor peoples fault! If you yourself, your husband/parents have ever had any financial difficulty you would not be so judgemental.

Re: Food bank
- Christine (30th Nov 2017 - 16:33:54)

I would be willing to help if a food bank was set up in Liphook.

Re: Food bank

Agree completely with stop the judgy comments!

How about compassion and empathy?

You never know when you might need a hand yourself, especially the way things are going at the moment...
