Scam phone call
- Dee (12th Dec 2014 - 11:29:55)

Just had a phone call from a foreign sounding lady, telling me that my computer had a problem and that they could fix it over the phone. Explained that I do not have a computer so how could they fix it!
She then hung up. Their telephone number was not available.
What a surprise.
Merry Christmas
Dee

Yes, this is an old scam, often they will say that they are from Microsoft and need to access your computer to solve the problem. They then ask for around £90 (under the £100 that credit cards protect!) or will ask for it to be balanced transferred (at which point if you agree to do this you are no longer protected as you have done it freely, even though you are being defrauded).

So if someone calls, who you are not expecting, do not give them any details. I love your response about not having a computer as this would hopefully mean that they won't return the call.

Next time they ring tell them you are looking at a window and they ask what do you see tell them you see birds flying around and trees ;) they will put the phone down and get bored as we have had this happen before

I too today received a similar call. The caller ID number on my phone was 01325 260778. A foreign lady telling me she was from Microsoft and I had a problem with a virus getting onto my operating system. I asked her what operating system I had, she couldn't tell me. I challenged her with questions she couldn't answer and then told her the call was a scam. She denied this but then put the phone down. PLEASE DO NOT get involved with this type of conversation with someone ringing saying something similar - it is a scam to either get money from you or hack your system. When I rang the number back it was unobtainable. Just a warning to everyone as it is easy to be 'taken in' with it.

Ah thanks, that solves a mystery - I had a call yesterday from that same number but didn't get to the phone in time to pick it up. When I called it back I too got number unobtainable

They must be blitzing Liphook at the moment because I also got a call but as I didn't recognise the number I didn't answer.Happy Christmas to one and all.

Yep, me too earlier this week! They must be having a blitz on Liphook!
Saw a piece on BBC Breakfast earlier in the week and they said to contact the Information Commissioner and report these nuisances and in some cases, companies that are flouting the direct/tele-marketing regulations. Apparently they are working to tighten up and enforce existing regulation, if memory serves.

You can search 'ICO' (Information Commissioner's Office) on-line and find the most appropriate on-line form on their website for your complaint and they will investigate.
I have emailed three times this week re this 'live' call scam re my computer, a 'health and lifestyle' survey and an automated call about a claim on my 'Life Insurance'. (I don't think it would be me making the claim if it were MY life insurance!!) They will be busy investigating that lot and each time the ICO came back with a quick email response and a case number and advise on links to pursue it further ... if you have the energy! It helps if you have the number they called from (and helpfully the scammers left it on my phone) and the number being called. What happens after that I wait to see ...
