lamp posts...?
- kayleigh (23rd Oct 2014 - 19:33:00)

hi all,

i was just wondering if theres anyone out there that knows why there is new lamp posts going up around sainsburys and down station road...right next to the old ones...?

walking up the road i couldnt see any thing wrong with the old ones they are all working...?

its just more money being spent for no reason when theres a post on here saying a nursery in the village is in trouble...?

thanks

They did this all round farncombe where I work, if its the same thing they will be replacing the old ones with energy efficient ones, I have no idea why this means the need to change the entire post from ground level but apparently it does!!

I think this may have something to do with this scheme:

www.lightsoninhampshire.co.uk/...

I think it's great because the new lighting is more energy efficient than current street lighting.

It is also better for the environment because the light is better directed and is white light rather than the orange light of current street lights.

It means that there's less light pollution so stars will be more easily visible, and the current street lighting can disrupt the life-cycles of insects and nocturnal animals.

I also disagree that it's a waste of money, as it should save money in the long term too. Less money will be spent by the council on street patrols to find broken lights as these ones can be controlled remotely, and obviously they will cost less to run since they use less energy.

I think it's a really good investment by Hampshire County Council. It's already been installed on my road, and was very efficiently done too.

Some people previously moaned about the brightness of the new lights but the council will dim any lights that are too bright outside bedroom windows and seem really keen to avoid any problems.

The old lamps are totally recycled too! Good work Hampshire County Council :-)

(Also I think the funding comes from a totally different place than any decision not to fund the nursery??)

They re replacing them as they have better lighting and are more energy effecient
We got a leaflet months ago regarding it :)

I think this is part of the wider Hampshire county council street light PFI project. They are upgrading all street lights over a certain age (probably 15 years) to improve efficiency and also give them more control when they are dimmed, and also to let them know when one goes wrong. Long term should save money.

Leaflets are sent to residents approximately 6 weeks before they start in an area. Had ours done a few months ago - when there was a problem I contacted them and it got sorted pretty quickly.

These would be different decision makers (with a different budget) to those involved in the other project.

The new lights are very bright compared to the old orange ones - we had one installed outside our house a few months ago. A 'shade' has been attached which helps a little but the lights are not dimmable apparently as dear old Hampshire has gone for the cheap neon option rather than LED.

We had only about a week's notice of the installation - pity as with warning I could have arranged for my new curtains to have blackout linings. Thanks guys.

These new lamp posts also have cameras in, big brother WILL be watching you

Then big brother should realise how exceptionally bright these lights are in the middle of the night and do something about it!

I have no problem with the new lamp posts, as long term they will save money and are more enviromentally friendly. BUT do they really have to be drilling right outside my living room window on a Sunday afternoon at 3pm just as we have sat down to dinner ? I went out to speak to the men who were doing the work, and told them i felt it was totally unreasonable on a sunday afternoon. and all I got was ' I no speak english'..........

Having just spent the night with bedroom blinds glowing orange like an alien space craft was parked outside, am going to complain ASAP. Moved to Liphook quite recently but the town where I came from used to turn off the lights after midnight then on again about 5. It was great. Could it happen here?

Re: lamp posts...?
- Mairead (29th Oct 2014 - 14:47:07)

I think it's doubtful they can be turned off 12 - 5 as there is an issue of public safety and darkness. But you can request that a shield be put on the light if the light is interfering with your sleep etc .

See the link below to a previous conversation on this - half way down, someone has put info on this.

'White' (very bright) street lighting

Do not look up at these lamps as they nearly burn your eyeballs out !!
They may create a better light but the light fails to give sufficient light near the ground. They should have been put on lower poles.
Surely they could turn them off between 1.00 am and 5.00 am, as this would help stop our local would be burglars from having light to help them in their break ins.

Re: lamp posts...?
- Barney (29th Oct 2014 - 16:14:08)

I'm not sure the burgler statement is a valid arguement for turning the lights off. If i were somewhere I shouldnt be I for one would prefer to be in darkness than illuminated for all to see.

The shields make a (very) small difference. So much better if they could be dimmed.

- Boris (29th Oct 2014 - 20:39:18)

If these new street lights are fittted with cameras, then they need to have the best light to get those pics of you inside your home having dinner or whatever. Dont forget to close your bedroom curtains of you could end up on you tube.

What's the problem? We have these new lamp posts in the haslemere road no problem with the posts they are brilliant only because they have taken out the old lights put new posts in here is the punch line they have no lights fitted so we are in the dark lovely.
Sorry this was posted very tongue in cheek.
