Drivers Beware
- Carole (16th Oct 2014 - 17:10:21)

I was stopped by a man in Thursley today who stepped out near the centre of the road and was pointing at my car. I had only just pulled out of a junction and was going at a slow speed and my immediate reaction was to lock the car doors.

My window was open slightly and the guy said he had run out of petrol, he wasn't from the area and he had no card!! He was probably Eastern European and out of the corner of my eye I could see there was a second man dressed in black near the car.

The vehicle was a very dark navy blue or black older type saloon with black wheels. As I pulled away the man then tried to stop the car that was approaching from behind me.

I have reported the incident but drivers should be aware that this sort of thing is going on in our area. I feel sorry if these people were genuinely in trouble but I suspect they were just after money.

This sounds like an old scam. It often ends with them offering to pay for the fuel with some gold jewelry. This is usually some worthless metal painted gold.

My mum got done by the can't afford the bus ticket home version last year. She knew it was a scam but felt so pressured and stressed she paid up.

There was a TV programme recently where they also warned of Eastern European gangs who rely on distraction to allow the other person to open the back doors and take what they can.

Thanks for the warning

This happened to me about a year ago on the Passfield straight. Exactly the same. Very worrying, its difficult not to stop when they step out in the road and you dont want to run them over. I was sure it was a scam as there was another older man virtually out of sight as if he was hiding.

Surrey police have now issued a warning about the scam in this thread

They are also asking people to contact them if they have witnessed this scam.
