Last nights Council meeting.
- A. Ryan (30th Sep 2014 - 11:17:54)

Having attended part of the Parish council meeting for the first time last night, I would have to say I was left quite despondent .

A question was raised as to Neighbourhood plan, and from what I saw there was a blatant leaning amongst certain Councillors to disregard peoples feelings for the preference of housing on the Bohunt land and not other sites.
One was left quite annoyed at the dismissive attitude towards the public. One Councillor stated that there had been great opposition at a meeting a year ago for the land on Bohunt to be built on.

Total disregard to the LIPS meeting however, when more people had been made aware of the need for the extra housing and thought this to be the preferred site. Apparently this meeting does not qualify as to the "majority" of Liphook.
I would hasten to say nor does a few people who at that time were in the "know"

This Councillor was blatant in her belief that we would all prefer the other sites including Chiltley.
No other form of meeting other than a Council meeting would have ones free speech so harnessed, as time after time people tried to get back to this subject and were knocked back.

These people were elected and can be deselected, be warned. You are the mouthpiece of Liphook and not there for your own ideals, but what is in the best interests to the now "large" village.

From what I saw last night some of them are behaving far from that.

Well done for going. I wish more people would go, ask questions, make their voices heard etc.

Just what is in the best interests of Liphook and the wider Parish?

Is it what you think it should be?

Is it what your neighbour or the bloke in the boozer thinks it should be?

Yes, the P Councillors may lose as well as win their seats on the Council. Those that were effectively voted on, are there to represent all our views. So are those that may have been co-opted, often because insufficient members of our community are willing and thick-skinned enough to put their heads continually above the parapet.

At some stage, our P Councillors must take on a leadership role. This may mean that they don't peddle the line that you or I would prefer. That's politics and representation of the people. Its not a perfect system by any means, but its what we've got.

If you feel strongly about a subject, lobby the Councillors. Most will be happy, if not delighted, to hear from someone who cares, because the vast majority, as I know from personal experience, do not either front up with their views and certainly don't volunteer.

Maybe someone with an opposing view to yours succeeded in convincing a Councillor to take a line. It does not mean they are all charlatans.

I wont be sticking my head into the PC noose. I haven't grown a thick enough skin to take all the brickbats that get thrown and I don't have the capacity to make the commitment to the community that they do consistently and voluntarily.

If anybody feels strongly enough to want to change the system or even some views, they can join the club or lobby the club.

Go for it ! Dawn wants you to.
