Iron Hill - Dog Poo
- Jacky (27th Sep 2014 - 18:51:58)

We went to Iron hill this afternoon with our two young children. I thought it would be a nice little walk for them. We were totally shocked to see how much dog poo was laying around. I am seriously not over exaggerating but we had to watch our step to try and miss the dog poo. It also smelt awful and eventually we just turned around and come home. Is this normal for Iron hill and is this a place to rather avoid? Anyone recommend a cleaner area to go for walks to enjoy the outdoors?

It's awful isn't it and I'd like to say that there are much cleaner areas to go and walk but the first 500 meters from any car park is what my son and I call Dog Poo Alley. Most dog walkers seem to think that because they are out in the country they don't need to pick up their dogs s**t.
Lynchmere common is slightly better than Chapel common which is slightly better than Iron Hill. You soon learn which paths to avoid.

I've had to stop taking the Liphook Walking For Health group to this site because of this problem. Chapel Common is fairly free from dog poo if you approch it from the Milland church end, park at the church but be careful crossing the dual carriageway! (The latter is probably the reason why it's not popular with dog walkers!)

Today I saw a dog walker at Chapel common with a bag ( used ) and I had to congratulate him as I never see anyone carrying a bag. As dogs including my own tend to defecate soon after getting out of the car near the entrances, can not people bag it and leave it near the car. I do this and it only adds a couple of minutes to your walk.
There is a sign stating cattle are roaming on the common and to avoid disease to them to pick the muck up.
I actually spoke to a lady who must have a dog walking business who had about 7 or 8 dogs off leads with no bag. I find this appalling and the owners of these dogs are they aware?
It is about time people grew up and not to think the Poo Fairy is going to clean up after you.
If you love your countryside then PICK IT UP!!

I am totally appalled by selfish dog owners who let their animals foul our lovely countryside.

In Liphook we are so lucky to have beautiful countryside to enjoy that surrounds the village at every point. I stopped walking over Weavers Down a couple of years ago because of so much dog s***t.

Before angry dog owners get on their high horse, I am the owner of two large dogs. My dogs go to the toilet in my back garden before we go out for a walk so that they only wee on their walk. I also do not let them stop if we are walking on a pavement, so that again they do not foul. To top this I have also taught them to go to the toilet by command which makes it easy to get them to go before we go out.

I only wish that the minority of dog owners took more responsibility and control over their pets, so that the majority of us responsible dog owners do not get tarred with the same brush!

I love my dogs and wouldn't be without them, as I'm sure do other owners. You need to clear up behind dogs just as you would your own children. You wouldn't let your child foul pathways, pavements and other people's front gardens so don't let your dogs!!!

Now should I open the debate about cats in residential areas fouling other gardens except their own? Now that really makes me angry ...

The reason a lot of dogs defeacate immediately upon release from the boot of a car is that they are not walked enough. Sometimes this is because the owners are at work all day, and the dog cooped up without any way to relieve themselves. My dog has to be walked at least 3 times a day, and never does that. Also, blame the owners who maybe do nor let the dog go in the garden. Why have a dog and then not be able to look after it yourself? dog walkers are sometimes needed if in hospital, ill or away on holiday, but in general, is it fair to leave a dog all day, they need companionship?

Oh Stacey , what a ridiculous thing to say!!
My dogs are let out in the garden at least twice before their morning walk, but they love to save it up just for the moment of excitement when getting out of the car. I just say " go to the toilet " and they oblige. I bag it and leave it by the car. I carry another bag in case they go again.
I usually leave my kitchen door open so they can access the garden most times especially in the summer.
Having at one time worked in dog kennels I can assure you they know when to go to the toilet.
Some good news, I saw another walker with a bag this morning on Chapel common. Poo fairy, your time is nearly up!

We have just acquired a new puppy and took her to Chapel Common the other weekend as I was told it was a great place to walk your dog. I have to say I was totally shocked by the amount of dogs**t that was lying around in various states of festering. I wont be going back there in a hurry.

It's not so simple, but a few points:
-cat litter inside other peoples' properties pose far higher risk to human health and loose cats are disastrous to wildlife diversity. Cat poo is far more noxious.
-some dogs will not be toilet-trained for veterinarian reasons.
-some walkers are new and learning.
-commercial dog walkers must be more responsible to clear up and dispose correctly.
-the problem may be partially addressed with better disposal facilities
-the growing amount of dog poo is an indication of certain weather conditions and the growing local population.

Re: Iron Hill - Dog Poo
- A. Ryan (30th Sep 2014 - 08:35:27)

Rolf,
It is very simple.
1. Carry bags, in pocket or bag
2. Dog poos, use bag to pick it up.
3. Either put bag near car OR carry it with you.
If you have an aversion to dog poo do not have a dog. There is no excuse for new owners., Let me let them into a little secret......YES their dog poos too!!
What has the weather got to do with a dog pooing?
If they want to go, they will ,come hale or shine.
Do not run a dog walking business if you can not clean up after them.
Judging by the amount near entrances to common land it could be bagged and left by the car.
Last of all.... TAKE dog poo bag home.Put in car and open window.
What do we get out of this ?
Our beautiful countryside kept clean, isn't that what we all want ?

NO EXCUSES......

Well said Ryan. I always have plenty of black bags in my pocket ready to pick up what my dogs will usually leave behind. There's no problem regarding disposal as there are plenty of bins around the village that accept the bags. Costing me a small fortune in bags though!

Drunk man with dog on the green last night was too far out of it to even notice what his dog was doing.

- Rolf (2nd Oct 2014 - 06:03:28)

Rear Ryan,
My entry was a list of factors possibly involved in the problem. There were no excuses nor justifications, sorry if you have failed to recognise the distinction.
Your list of instruction is no news to me or to most dog owners, but may be useful for some, thank you. No secrets there.
Your question regarding what has the weather got to do with the problem:
Dog poo decomposes slower in dry conditions, hence the recent accumulation. Milder weather makes it smellier to us.
Seems that for emotive subjects on this forum people become too passionate and seek conflict even where there isn't one.
Best wishes, R

I am puzzled on 2 counts:

1. The law requires a dog owner to pick a dogs poo up. Admittedly it is just about unenforceable, but the law is there nonetheless. If you see someone not picking up and you can identify them in some way then report them. I always pick my dogs poo up.

2. No one has mentioned this is this thread, which seems odd to me. Do people not realise this law exists?
