- Irene (10th Sep 2014 - 11:48:38)

I am organising a reunion lunch for all the old girls that went to the Old Liphook Girls School for most of their education. If you are interested in coming please phone Irene 01428 723823

Irene, I take it you mean what is now Liphook Library! What years are you going back to - I left there in 1970!!

It is really for the girls that went there from 5 to 15 which means most of us will be over 70yrs but if you want to join us you are more than welcome.

What about the boys who went there? Sounds like discrimination!
I was at the school from 1947 to 1950. When boys were seven they then moved to Bramshott Boys' school.

My mother was a teacher at Liphook School, her classes usually being in the 'tin church', until she retired because of ill health in about 1958.

Mr Kercher crunching polo mints standing in the doorway so everyone passing had to say "excuse me sir" ! Making us stand up at our desks until we correctly answered a random times table question.

Running across the playground in the rain to the toilet block. Milk that was either frozen on top or sour from being left in sun on classroom doorstep.

I left there 1972. I don't think I've been permanently scarred?!

I remember Mr Kercher - he used to tell us of if we dropped a pencil on the floor lol!!! - also running to the outside toilets - the playground that sloped and we played netball on it!! - good memories.

I remember the sloping playground and 'chain-chase' with ever increasing lengths.

The head teacher in my time was the leonine Miss Hyde.

I remember Mrs Graham in the 3rd year and Mr Lewis in the 4th year - Mrs Simpson rings a bell too!! It was another headmistress when I was there - can`t think of her name at the moment but she was not very nice!!

Hello Donald
I remember you and your mum very well. She was my teacher in the tin church and if you were caught talking she made you bend over and she smacked your bottom and made you stand in the corner. How times have changed. You lived in Queen Street.
Anyway I quite liked her and she was very friendly with Mrs Sop who lived at Rake.
Miss Hyde was very handy with the cane.

I was there 57 to 60 prior to Bramshott school. I remember Mrs Sopp. Miss Champion and Mrs Maidment come to mind.

Irene,

It's nice to be remembered! School discipline certainly has changed since those days. I had forgotten my mother's technique, maybe because although in her class at one time I didn't dare transgress!

We did live in Queen Street, which is also where we were walked in line at lunchtime to have school dinners in the hall which used to be where the little square car park now is.

I, too, remember Mrs Sopp from Rake, and a Mrs Morris who came up from Portsmouth, and had to hide all my cabbage inside the mashed potato before I would eat it. I still do not have a liking for cabbage.

I would be interested to hear your surname. Rather than publish it you could email me:

Miss Welch (later Mrs Link) was head teacher when I was there - wore vivid pink and orange lipstick. Someone wrote on school wall that she was a cow (shocking language!!!) and we never told who did it - but we all knew!
Mrs Maidment, Mr Kercher (who sang so loud in assembly he drowned us all out) and Mr Gill. Can't remember year 2 teacher.
4 "houses" - Grace Darling, Elizabeth Fry, Edith Cavell and Florence Nightingale - inspirational women to encourage us. At least we knew what they had done - unlike majority of Bohunt pupils who can't tell you who their tutor groups are named after!
Didn't Mrs Sopp transfer to infants? I'm sure she was my first teacher there.
Had the job of walking across playground to toilets and back ringing the bell to show it was break/lunchtime. Mortified when one day bell flew off handle in full view of whole school. As I said - not scarred at all!

That`s right Miss Welch, she used to laugh at me if I did something wrong ie sewing in particular!! Miss O`Connor was another teacher and yes Mrs Sop taught me at the infant school, not forgetting Mrs Leigh-He - lovely teacher.
