Is there an automated external defibrillator in Liphook?
- D (27th Feb 2014 - 17:45:44)

If someone has a heart attack, as well as ringing 999, is there access to a difibrillator for member of the public to use? If so where is it kept?

Have heard that there is an internal one inside the bowling club not an external one. The most obvious place to put an external ome would be sainsburys. I have seen one attached to the outside wall of Waitrose in Haslemere. I believe the ambulance service sell them or facilitate you buying them, as people need to know how to use them.

heart attack vs cardiac arrest.
People use these terms interchangeably, but they are both very different.
Sudden cardiac arrest is where the heart suddenly stops beating. When this happens, blood stops flowing to the brain.Within seconds, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse. Death occurs within minutes if the victim does not receive treatment. Most people die from it.

Heart attacks on the other hand happen when problems have occurred, which are generally led by lifestyle choices and result in furred up or blocked arteries. This results in a portion of the heart suffering damage. Symptoms generally start slowly and can last for many hours or even weeks. The heart doesn't stop beating [unlike cardiac arrest].

Fast action saves lives, but do not think about giving a heart attack victim de-fibrillation. Call 999. On the other hand, a person going blue whose heart has stopped will not last the wait for an ambulance, so .you should start CPR immediately [which in my own personal experience stands for Break Plenty of Ribs].

also I think I saw a programme about these 'public' defibrillators which said they won't actually 'zap' someone who hasn't suffered a cardiac arrest - there's some sort of inbuilt fail-safe mechanism to prevent it working unless the conditions are right.

Hi,
A fast response unit is still not fast enough for a person whose heart has stopped.
Unconscious in seconds dead in minutes.
Mouth to mouth and CPR are the only way to prevent death whilst waiting for professionals.
If you don't know how to do it - LEARN
If there is not an ambulance nearby, controllers will radio local 'responder' units so they will arrive automatically when you dial 999. Then you would wait for a fully equipped ambulance to take you to the ICU.

Any establishment that has an AED on their premises must supply their details to a central database which the emergency services use to tell you where you're nearest one is when you dial 999.

Somebody once told me that staff at Old Thorns are trained and expected to assist in case of a medical urgency until help from outside the village arrives... Anybody else heard something along those (not very reassuring) lines?

Following an emergency call two members of Old Thornes staff attended my home as First Responders and treated my wife until paramedics arrived.

They were most efficient, helpful and friendly.

There's one in the old phone box outside Martin Mcolls Headley

There is one in the old red phone box by the Rising Sun pub in Milland - a great use of an old phone box I thought!

One at Sainsbury's or the Millennium Centre would be good for Liphook...

Just to let you know that any publicly accessible defibrillator can be used by ANY untrained person. I recently used one at Search and Rescue and was amazed how easy it was. All you need to do is follow the instructions that are spoken by the machine or that are shown in easy to follow diagrams.

The most important thing to realise is that you cannot do any harm with one of these. The machine will measure the heart's rhythm and IT will decide if a shock is necessary.

If you find someone with a suspected cardiac arrest, call 999 and they will tell you where the nearest AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is located. If nowhere else, the local doctor's surgery should have one.

If you do nothing else this weekend, PLEASE watch this video to see how easy these devices are to use. You never know when you might be able to save someone's life once you have the confidence that you can use an AED.

Following a recent emergency 2 members of Old Thornes staff attended as first responders, They were at our home within minutes of our call and were very helpful and efficient whilst we awaited the arrival of paramedics,

The previous sarcastic message was most uncalled for, Perhaps one day you will need their help!

This was discussed at the November 2016 Parish Council meeting as BT had offered us the 3 remaining red phone boxes in the village.

I see the Parish Council have forgotten about Passfield again . We have a disused & disconnected phone box outside the Passfield stores . So, contrary to your meeting minutes you have FOUR phone boxes, unless of course we are suddenly not part of BLP anymore in
that case why do I pay my council tax to you .

- Jane Ives (26th Feb 2017 - 13:43:55)

We can only purchase BT phone boxes that are decommissioned by BT and we were only offered 3 - outside the Co-op, Manor Fields and at the Prince of Wales in Hammer. We can do no more.

I was under the impression that the one in Passfield was actually purchased by the residents of Passfield some time ago but I could be wrong. Maybe check with some locals as they may know.

There is one in Liphook Village Surgery behind Lloyds bank in center of village. There is someone in the building 7am til at least 19.30 hrs monday to friday. One weekends I believe the first responder or fire service have one but one in a specific site in the village available 24/7 would be beneficial. A request to Liphook medical may be possible.

There is an old red phone box in the square, next to the fire shop. That would be a good central place for a defibrillator!

I could be wrong but I'm sure Bohunt School now have one located on the wall in their reception area

Re: Is there an automated external defibrillator in Liphook?
- helen (7th Mar 2017 - 20:55:12)

N if you read the article, it says " we presented to the parish council",
which means a group of residents then adopted the phone box. I believe
defibrilators cost between 4k and 8k so they have to be placed in positions where the population is biggest who may be walking in the area, like a town centre or supermarket.
