Time to wrap taps and tanks

With the clocks winding back and winter fast approaching, now is the time to start preparing homes and businesses for cold weather.

This timely reminder is being issued from South East Water to help prevent the misery of frozen pipes and flooded homes as the temperature continues to drop.

Taking a few simple steps such as wrapping up both internal and external pipes, repairing dripping taps, locating and checking the internal stop tap and making sure the loft insulation is adequate can prevent water pouring through ceilings damaging buildings and furniture.

Steve Andrews, Head of Service Management at South East Water, said: “With the sun setting earlier, now is the time to be heading up into the attic and out into the garden to check that everything is properly lagged and protected from freezing.

“We are also asking people to check on any elderly neighbours to make sure they are winter ready.”

If an internal pipe freezes it may lead to having no water, or even pipes bursting as they thaw.

Steve continued: “We have similar problems with our own water mains during cold weather, but while we will have teams out repairing our burst pipes in the ground, a few simple precautions can help customers prevent the misery caused by burst pipes in their home.”

The company has top tips on getting ready for winter on its website including a short film on how to insulate pipes at southeastwater.co.uk/winter. More general information can be found at metoffice.gov.uk/getreadyforwinter
