Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

The highly acclaimed British film, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, will be shown this Friday, 2nd March, at the Liphook Millennium Centre Cinema. A few days ago it won the BAFTA Award for the Best British Film of 2011. As well as winning this, the Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year, BAFTA also awarded it the Best Adapted Screenplay for the adaptation of John Le Carre’s 1974 espionage classic by Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan.

The film also was also selected by the British Independent Film Awards for Best Technical Achievement and by the Irish Film and Television Awards as Best International Film. The story is that British agent Ricki Tarr discovers the existence of a mole at the heart of British Intelligence, and so begins the hunt to uncover the Russian spy. MI6 agent George Smiley, is a careworn but brilliant spy whose implacable drive leads him out of retirement and into the middle of a labyrinthine conspiracy. The Circus leadership is not alerted since any one of them could be the mole.

Gary Oldman excels as George Smiley. At the 2011 Empire Awards, Gary Oldman was honoured with the Icon Award for Achievement. An acclaimed presence in motion pictures for 25 years, he is regarded as one of the foremost actors of his generation.

The film has been received amazingly well by the critics and it is definitely a “must see”:

The Guardian ««««« 'A brilliant study of the disenchantment, compromise and tension of the 1970s spy game... What a treat this film is, and what an unexpected thrill.'

The Daily Telegraph«««««'A triumph' 'a rare film.'

I hope to see you at the film on Friday. Tickets are selling well and can be obtained in advance at the Millennium Centre, telephone 01429 723889.
