Christmas Lights
- Irene Ellis (2nd Dec 2016 - 16:50:29)
Two years ago when this topic came up the team looked into the costs of replacing the lights. Petersfield lights cost £40,000 and I believe Grayshott spent £20,000 on there’s after some years of raising the money through businesses and other sources. As our fund raising is for the flower beds that remains our priority.
As for asking the carnival etc for money all you will be doing is taking money away from other well deserving charities.
Yes there was money pledge for lights last year but as the total amount was £80 we did not take it up.
So the Christmas lights were all updated with new harnesses, new forms i.e. Father Christmases, Lanterns etc and LED lights so should be OK for some years to come.
It is the team’s opinion that old fashion lights complement our conservation, historical square and there is nothing wrong with being different to all the other villages. We have also been told that the children absolutely love them as they depict what Christmas is all about for them.
However if there is a group of people that would like to form a team to raise this vast amount of money, and jump through all the hoops such as - Deal with permissions from councils and SSE, and have them PAT tested every year. Get an engineers report on the lampposts for health and safety reasons. Find somewhere to store the lights and each year maintain them ready to go up then we would be very happy for them to go ahead.

Some say the lights are old fashioned and out of date! I say the lights are "vintage", and vintage is all the rage these days.

Coming through station road last night my son was so excited when he saw all the lights lit up! Every time we leave the house now he's on the look out for more.
We did notice that the cancer charity shop on station road didn't have any lights like the other shops. Does anyone know why that is?
Christmas lights are always so well done just like everything else in the village. Huge thankyou to everyone who puts time into it!

Thank you Liphook in Bloom! I am very fond of the Liphook Christmas lights and would be sorry to see them go, so I am glad to learn that they've been given a full refurb this year.
I rather like the fact that Liphook's lights are different from the plain white lights that other places seem to favour nowadays. I like the different colours and the vintage/retro look!

Very well said Irene. Also a good explanation as to what is involved in producing the Christmas displays year after year. Very well done to all concerned in bringing the festive feeling to our village.

The lights are part of our memories, for most of us from our childhood waiting to see the Santas face. Our lights make us unique, please don't change and glad to hear they have had a refurb for many years to come.
Merry Christmas.
