Christmas tree in the square
- Bll (1st Dec 2015 - 20:21:29)
Could we get a christmas tree with lights where the old tree was taken out?
Was taken tonight at the difference between Petersfield lights and Liphook - bigger town with traders obviously but...

Christmas tree would be a great idea and look perfect in that very spot. The carol singing would be lovely around the tree. Maybe one of the local Xmas tree farms would donate one? Would give them great advertising too. Could Liphook in Bloom approach one?
It would make the village look very festive along with the current lights that are going up around the village.

I was thinking the exact same thing this morning. A Christmas tree where the old tree was taken out would be lovely. I'm sure many local residents would be happy to contribute towards one. I definitely would. Great idea.

Haslemere & Grayshott have different decorations each year. How come? Take a look at their tree.
Yes Liphook in Bloom do a lovely job with what they have, but surely Hampshire council would make an effort in the village and update these decorations.
There's no need to shout me down with "go and move there then", that's just petty narrow mindedness. It's about time Liphook was made to look Christmassy a little bit more than it does. Haslemere residence haven't had to find any of it, so why doesn't Liphook get any of it. I know Haslemere is in Surrey, but also checkout Petersfield & Midhurst.
Come on!!!

- g Renouf (3rd Dec 2015 - 08:43:00)
please correct me if i'm wrong (very often I am)
BUT Grayshott and Haslemere have some very wealthy sponsors when it come to Christmas lights
Have to be careful how I word this not to upset and offend everyone .....so apologies now
Liphook has grown from a small village to a commuter stop the village community feel is leaving , until we get everyone to think of the Liphook as one big community we are going to struggle ( not just with lights but other village projects ) we have to make all residents feel they can help and be one big community
Living here for 46 years Liphook is now missing that community feel I hope it can be brought back lets make LIphook the best place to live
I do not believe the council helps with cost ?
Liphook pays for the electric for the lights NOT FREE !!!
LIB clean and maintain the lights as volunteers
SEB install lights (Not sure if they charge LIB) ?
Cost to replace lights £10k plus ! have a look online for commercial Christmas lights it might shock you !
Hopefully each shop will have a nice display adding to the festive feel
Sorry for going off topic
Hope to see you all at the Carol service soon
Merry Christmas to all in Liphook

The yucca needs to be rescued as it's not frost proof and is already looking pretty sick!
The lights are lovely but a Christmas Tree would be very pretty .........perhaps the Anchor could donate one as it would benefit them....

Observation, lovely window Findlays, why don't all our local shops, offices put some lights, decorations in their windows, might help with the festive look of our lovely village. Liphook in Bloom do a fantastic job but come on all the business out there 🎄

Maybe the Anchor pub would like to donate a Christmas tree, in the spirit of goodwill at this festive time!
I am not sure but Liphook In Bloom may even have some spare lights (used on the old tree?) that they could put on.
Thank you Liphook In Bloom for another lovely Christmas display, it makes such a difference to the Square.

If memory serves, the cost of erection and removal of the Christmas lights on the lampposts is about £2,500.00 and this is paid by the Parish Council.

This comes up every year just before Christmas!
If heads were screwed on properly we could be looking at some lovely lights paid for by the many developers in Liphook.
Instead those who dare criticize the existing old fashioned lights are shouted down because....Liphook in Bloom. Perhaps if our Parish Councillors negotiated with these developers for a contribution which would benefit the community then we would have lights better than Oxford Street!!! Parish Council may well payout over 2 grand but where does that money come from ?! We are allowed to have our say.
There a lot of unsung hero's in Liphook who do not receive any praise for the voluntary work they do and they don't bang on about it!

H
This thread is about a Christmas tree for the Square. (Although admittedly some have gone a bit 'off piste'). In the past we have had lights in the Chestnut tree and hopefully will have lights in its replacement next year. In the meantime however a Christmas tree would be a good idea and it is not a criticism of the other lights.

I don't think it is quite as easy as it may seem. There are things like public liability insurance, certification of any electric installation, cost of electricity and a source for this to be undertaken. Also people prepared to give up their time to put all this into action. Maybe everyone should contact the head office of Greene King and put the case forward for a Liphook Christmas Tree.

The Grayshott tree is taken from the woods off Kingswood Firs on the last Sunday in November. It is then erected in the square. This is all done with a group of volunteers who have the equipment to find this. The lights are put up on the same day. The lights in the trees on the two greens stay up permanently and are 'switched on' at the appropriate time. They are occasionally switched on for other occasions throughout the year.

Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without the annual bleat about Christmas lights. I would have been sooooooo disappointed if it hadn't been raised somewhere, even if it barged in on a thread about a Christmas tree.
Thanks to all for keeping up this old tradition 😈😃😈, my Christmas is complete.

- liz (4th Dec 2015 - 10:32:31)
As there were always lights on the Chestnut tree (I assume provided and paid for by the Anchor as it was on their land - could be wrong) it would not be a huge electrical step forward to put them on a Christmas Tree instead.
As I mentioned above it would benefit the Anchor as well as the village - it looks pretty bare and dismal outside our historic pub at the moment (not their fault I know before someone leaps to their defence!)
